      Also, pilots and crew mostly can't see the physical state of the aircraft while in flight. All they knew was there was a bang, a shudder, and alarms indicating an engine failure. You can see the top of the wings through the window and that is all, and that's only if it's a daytime flight. All they have to know the state of the aircraft are their instruments.

    There wasn't going to be an emergency procedure or checklist for losing all hydraulics. The plane shouldn't be flyable after that. It's the same as there is no emergency procedure if the wing falls off! Should've been game over. The fact that anyone at all survived is testament to those pilots. The job they done was remarkable. • @lukes7479
      @lukes7479 4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      They are redundant, there are many redundancies in place. In the aviation industry we have a general rule and it is to practise at least dual redundancy, meaning if one system fails, there is at least one other system to back it up. In this case, there was triple redundancy on the hydraulic system, which is why it is such a rare occurrence that all three failures would occur at once.

    I remember when this happened. It was amazing that the pilots got the plane on the ground; if not for the last-second wing-dip, it could have made it. What was more amazing was that so many people survived. In later simulations, other crews weren't able to even get their planes near an airfield; testimony to the cool headedness of this crew, their combined training, and a lot of luck.

Not only did their skills and cool headedness avert far greater loss of life, but their handling of the media attention and notoriety are models of grace. They did not go on every talkshow, or book tours, or anything. They continued on with their professional careers and used their experiences to increase aviation safety.

    The senior flight attendant and two pilots filmed an episode of “I survived.” The flight attendant’s story really stuck with me as she recalled announcing the safety protocol instructions of the time, which were to place any lap children on the floor before bracing for landing. She later had to try to stop the mother of the young boy from running into the raging fire and the mother said “you told me to put him on the ground and now he’s gone.” It was horrifically heartbreaking and Jan says she believes she survived just so she could make a change in regulations for child safety on airlines.

    Holy.
    What Captain Hanes and his co-pilots did was truly amazing, and unhuman.
    It is almost impossible to save a plane from this tragedy, and in a miracle, these amazing pilots were able to save more than 50% of people on this plane.
    Respect to them.

      Commercial flight accidents are so incredibly rare, it would cost a small fortune to retrofit existing and add them to new planes with questionable tangible benefits. In fact, in this case 38% of passengers died whereas 1 in 4 (25%) of lap children died

      Why would they? Out of all of the children who died in this crash, as well as the regular passengers, 1 was a lap child. 1. Based on the evidence, it would seem lap childen had the best odds of survival. Why would they change regulations regarding lap child safety if the current one works?

    I had a similar experience. I had a complete loss of all hydraulic brakes in my car, and I needed to travel 30 miles to get to the nearest mechanic to fix the brake line that had burst. So I used engine braking to slow down for stop signs / stop lights, and then when down to only 15 mph I would use the cable activated rear emergency brakes to come to a complete stop. It's possible to control a vehicle that has a total loss of hydraulics, but it is not much fun.

They tried everything they could, in the exact precise order needed to minimize further complications and made at least 3 fast and accurate judgement about the landing; It's sad that 111 people lost their lives, but the outcome of this crash couldn't possible be better.
