Another excellent vid!! It’s so important to have feedback from professionals such as yourself, who can provide advice for anyone entering this trade, or perhaps, simply trying to build a professional grade tool set.
I've got an old set of gearwrench 3/8 set, paid 88 bucks from Matco of all places, bout 11yrs ago. deep and shallow, sae and metric, they were used as my main sockets in my service truck. the problem with them today is the main sizes, 10,13,15 7/16,1/2,9/16, are all very worn, to the point of rounding, gearwrench won't warranty unless they are literally broken or cracked, I've talked to the big 4 tool guys and Cornwell is the only one who will warranty a worn out socket, so I bought shallow and deep metrics to replace the gearwrench ones. the gearwrench are thinner walled, but the Cornwell shallow are the shortest of all the brands, which works very well for me.and , Cornwell has really good sales on their tools.
thank you for the good input, I still use some matco impacts from about 9 or so years ago that were on sale back when i got them, but yup, if you have good tool truck guy with some good pricing occasionally hard to beat. I know that my snap ons when they start to wear out my truck guy swaps them out readily if he has on hand. Again, thank you for watching and the good input!
have heard quite number of decent things about gp sockets, as for the gear wrench i bought off the other guy, well, it was kind of a good deal for both of us that somehow he wound up with the extra set, so i was able to get the deeps for deal off him lol. thankyou for watching and commenting, hope you have a good weekend!
@@BeardedSeabee82 Yes they are made in Taiwan. Even the cases look almost identical just the CP is red and Grey pneumatic is light blue. They have been great sockets so far. I was late to the impact game and used mostly chrome forever. Not turning wrenches for living anymore it is hard to justify truck prices for some tools in the end i ended up with mostly grey, gear wrench, proto and williams. All great tools
Thanks for the video Brandon. I really hate it when a set is not complete. GP is good stuff been eyeing their thin wall impacts in 3/8. To replace my Chrome
Just to clarify. Allen is no longer is business as it along with Armstrong we’re closed indefinitely by their parent company apex tools. I believe Armstrong warranties are replaced with gearwrench tools. So may be the same for Allen
Yup, found that out last night when doing search for them, it is a sad ordeal as they have been great set of impact sockets for me for quite a while, especially liked them due to fact they were usa made.
Tool Time! I have to try my hardest when I buy a new set of sockets to try to make sure it stays a complete set LOL you can never have too many sockets that's for sure
I'm Glad that you dont push just the big four. I also like that you mention that some of the lesser brands are not complete. I hate that.... lol I just bought some Texton 1/2 dr metric chrome deep. Very complete... Have a great weekend brother
Just watch out with tekton chrome, its pretty but they are soft, specially the 1/4in stuff, rounds the small fasteners off like nothing, from my experience. I keep them cause the impact sockets dont always fit in the tight areas of small stuff
do you every test mechanical diesel pumps with a pressure tester? if so what brand do you use seabee82. i need one for the micro diesel engine that come to my mower shop
been long time since i have had to use a pressure tester as most everything now is common rail fuel system. I do believe bosch and otc make some for bench testing. couldnt tell you as to cost on them however.
Im in the process of changing fields, Im interested working as a diesel tech. I currently work as a machine operator in the printing industry which is pretty much dying out. Making a long story short, I already have all my chrome 3/8, 1/4 and 1/2 mainly proto and SK. I never had to use impacts in my current field. Im seriously considering Wright or SK 1/2" drive brands. I am used to getting dirty LOL. Since I have all chrome 3/8, are 3/8 drive impacts required?
As far as impacts though for diesel or diesel/auto decent set of impacts is almost a requirement these days between 3/8&1/2 drives. As for brands, if you are set with domestic, would probably go wright. I know they warranty for life but not sure on their wear and tear warranty. Snap on will typically warranty out sockets if they wear out, sk however i know does not cover wear and tear (junk from work had new sk dual treat socket crap out after 3 months working in auto shop and is non warrantable). The half deeps in 3/8dr by snap on i will say are fantastic, but market full of options of non tool truck brands for regular and deep, metric and standard impact sets, but do get decent chro-moly impacts for sure. Any more questions about subject or brands feel free to ask and thank you for watching!
Sunex is better quality then gearwrench, gearwrench is China in those sockets, if u look at them there is a lot of imperfections in the steel, looks like future cracks can happen. Sunex is Taiwan, shotpeen kinda finish and much better quality in hand.
Will say that sunex does make decent socket, however have seen on amazon they, as well as tekton, have their impacts in chrome vanadium and their line up of chro-moly, and both at huge difference in price points. For my hard use stuff i do use snap on (all my sae 1/2dr deeps are snap on as well as my 12pt impacts) but this vid bit more for those guys out there just getting started without getting wrangled onto the rape vans lol

The 1/4" cp impacts look identical to my grey pneumatic.
Quite possible same factory perhaps, are the grey made in taiwan as well?

Thanks for the video Brandon.
I really hate it when a set is not complete. GP is good stuff been eyeing their thin wall impacts in 3/8. To replace my Chrome
thanks Dave! yeah CP and GP have both seemed to put out some decent impacts over the years without too heinous of price tag on them.
I have the Grey Pnuematic and sunex sets, both good for the money.Grey Pnuematic does have semi deep sets now
Oooh, i might have to go and check out those semi deeps! thanks for heads up walter hope your weekend goes well!

I have the gearwrench metric set u showed, didn't care for the quality so I got the SAE in sunex, night n day difference in quality
