This video was so good!! I never once thought I'd get a WR in this category, I did it for fun in a race against friends and was so surprised to learn it was actually the WR at the time. I've never attempted another run, but I will someday xD Humbled to be part of history in a video like this, and also super happy for Pianist that he now has this record. Man, this video brings me back in time. It was nice to see the whole timeline in detail (thought my total TL from RNG + mistakes was worse than that, lol). I'm particularly amazed at the end result that came after I left the scene. Sub 1h 29m RTA is an incredible achievement, very well done Pianist! heh i never thought those super early runs i did were the actual WR at the time. all this time i was playing to see if i could land a WR and turns out i did have it at the start just for a couple of days. just making it to the WR history of a big category like this is a longtime dream accomplished. also, isn't it funny how the very first run has smart steering on for a while? iirc i did this run just when i bought the game so i didn't even know that was a thing until i noticed i couldn't take lines well. this was pretty fun to watch, especially catching up with the later years when i had stopped playing regularly. i can't wait to come back for the 96-track category once that happens.

I actually have done a few runs of this and I'm at 51st place 8 minutes slower than the record. I'm probably waiting for the rest of the Booster Pass to release to do a 96 track-run though. One major change between 8 and 8 Deluxe you didn't mention is that a major strat called fire-hopping was removed. You could preserve your mini-turbo for a longer time by jumping left and right. This was obviously used in all world records. For AeonFrodo's times, you should add 1 second since she stopped the timer early.
I had about 5 or 6 drafts of this video. I actually mentioned fire-hopping and demon sliding up until this final draft, when I decided to remove it. The reason I took it out is because it applied to 150cc in MK8 WiiU (and not 200cc) so I didn't want viewers to get confused with it. Edit: In regards to AeonFrodo's times, her times are correct and she didn't stop the timer early. Her capture card, at the time, had a small delay when using it in OBS. If you look at her full video, you'll notice the timer start slightly before the run actually starts. It all balances out at the end. My capture cards did this too back in the day. Modern capture cards have very little delay with using it with OBS.
Another awesome video, man. The amount of care, work and passion that goes into a project like this (or at least to do it well, like you do) is insane. Mad props to you, as the only person I've seen who can rival SummoningSalt at Speedrun Histories (not that yours don't stand on their own).
Amazing video!! (Sorry for missing the premiere) I actually have some skill in Mario Kart 8 Deluxe since 2016/2017 (MK8/MK8D). Although, it's mostly in Time Trials.
What is interesting is, that I have played quite some mk8dx to find out what combo is best and I came to the same conclusion😊 however for learning to drive clean on 200cc, I preferred driving a lighter character and only recently started using dk😊

At the beginning of the video the quality of their driving felt comparable to mine. I was like ‘I could do this or at least be somewhat competitive to these times.’ But the moment the time trial speedrunners it got so serious. The strategies and driving lines they took were levels above anything a lowly online player like me could do. Great work with this video

I used to speedrun this game on the Wiiu but couldnt be arsed to switch when they took out firehopping. The game is much easier now. Also cant believe you didnt mention that at the intro, that is by far the biggest change.
I really liked the video! If I may give some suggestions, it would be for the audio parts. Both to equalize your voice to make it stand out more. There isn't much noice from your mic, still though you don't sound "close", when talking. Also keep the volume levels a bit smoother/same between the different stages on the video as well as lower the background music even more while talking. Thats my 2 cents, over all very nice editing, interesting story and a fun watch, thank you!
It’s crazy seeing a player as good as you using Rosalina + P Wing to do a run of all vanilla tracks! Would love to see how much better you can do it today. It had to be odd trying to do a run immediately after buying the game and picking whatever seemed best before anyone knew what the meta combos would be.
draco played competitive 8u prior to speedrunning this game so it’s no surprise he took the boards by storm so early on, not many competitive players really go hard into speedrunning so being one of the few dedicated really reflects how far ahead the runs he got were for it’s time

Great vid! Would be interesting to see what the Sum Of Best Segments time would be - i.e the fastest time for each track all added together. I assume it’d be around 1:25:00RTA or 1:05:00IGT based on the last stats, or probably better since you can pick the best run of each track.
I loved this video it’s really good, quality content. I was glad to get something « just like blue yourself history » and I found at you’re the guy who did it lol nice streak. Hope there’s room for more. Just sometimes I think the music spikes too loud too suddenly for example in gameplay phases. In the end of the video during the climax why not but overall I expect chill content, borderline ASMR as the rest of the video but that’s an opinion idk if everybody would rather this kind of experience.
I just wanted to say that while yes, distance from 1st *is* a factor in the items you get, your placement still limits the items you can get. For example, in a 12 player room, you can only get a shock or a bullet in 9th-12th place, and you can never get a green shell in those low spots
This seems really fun, and I would love to try this. Of course I need to practice, but an average of a half hour of gaming wouldn’t be too long. Just need to get a way to record my attempts on Speedrunning this game. I wonder what placement I’ll get for my 1st try when looking at the leaderboard
