  • In this video I present some tips for succeeding as Germania in Rome: Total War original or Remastered.
Feel free to share your thoughts in the comment field below. Did I miss something? Or would you approach the campaign from a completely different perspective?
You might want to complement this video with Germania roster Tierlist:
    • Tierlist of Germania's...
    or with Germania campaign playlist:
    th-cam.com/users/playlist?http...
    The channel contains three categories:
    1) Playing of quality old games or remastered versions of them
    2) Some funny shorts, guides or tier lists related to quality old games or remastered versions of them
    3) Games that hopefully will become quality old games later :)
Most of the games will be strategy, or role-playing games. You can also make suggestions.
I hope you will enjoy my content :)
If you are a fan of Rome: Total War or plan to play it, especially with Germania, you should check this video out.

Probably one of the most powerfull factions in the entire game and also enjoyable to play, until low building lvl and disorder f*cks you up. :D

Thanks for the comment. Fully agreed on that. Though, quite vulnerable to missiles :) Thanks for the comment.

If you are focused on the west, one way of halting dacian and scythian expansion from the east is to park some spear warband and archers on a bridge. The AI tends to try to take settlements "in order" that resembles a contiguous empire, so that means between Germania and Scythia and Dacia, those AI will be trying to take Vicus Gothi, Vicus Macromanii, or Lovosice. All of which are territories you probably hold and if you're expanding westward, you haven't much expanded past these places. All are near rivers with river crossings relatively close to the actual settlement. The spears are usually enough in the early game, and you can bolster them with some javelins that you otherwise won't be using very much for any other purposes, until you get archers, at which point, switch them out for archers.
The horse archers from Scythia can be a bit of an issue but if they have to funnel over a bridge, they are usually dumb enough to touch your spear warband after crossing, at which point they melt, but if you have foot archers of your own it's over even faster because horse archers have almost no protection from missiles, and the river itself requires them to bunch up and get close to you in order to fire at your army, which makes them an easy target.
If you're an aggressive player, a rapid expansionist, like me, it's possible that you try to expand in all directions at once and then experience manpower issues, public order issues, and have a border that is difficult to defend as you push into Dacia while you're trying to conquer spain and gaul and britons and the Julii all at once, and that means you definitely don't have the money or manpower to actually take on horse archers.
So in this instance the best offense is a good defense, there are too many directions to safely expand in at once, so pick a direction you're NOT going in, and find a river crossing that the enemy AI has to cross to attack you, and hold that bridge for a century or so. Beef up the barracks at the nearby settlement just in case you want to spawn a larger army as rapidly as possible, and then keep a moderate to small force on that bridge, complete with watch towers to see incoming armies. Watchtowers and bridges help defend your borders just as well as a full stack of a standing army does, assuming you can fill up the bridge in a turn or two.
If you're expanding east as your first focus, their lands aren't so great and you will then have a very long southern border with a nasty bunch, the romans and the greeks and the thracians, which will make a defensive stand quite difficult. I don't like expanding east first, but if you do, you can score a quick knockout on Scythia by taking their westernmost starting settlement and holding that bridge that's right next to it. They're not much of an issue after that since their recruitment and economy is much further east and will be trying to re-take their former territory so they're a predictable bunch to defend. AI horse archers don't take settlements well when you have spear warband and archers inside of it.
Attack Dacia when they're at war with Thrace, Scythia, Macedon, or a Roman faction and they won't be able to hold against all fronts. Their army may even be away from their home territories as they try to expand, in which case, they're a quick knockout. Your army is just superior to theirs anyway. The issue is not taking Dacia or Scythian lands, it is holding it against the south while also holding Germania against the Romans. That's why I like to take the west and the south first before expanding east. I like a defensible border.

Thanks for the comment. Utilizing the bridges is a great idea. And agreed, that going East first does not seem very lucrative :)

My theory is, that with the short campaign goals (take out Dacia and Scythia), the developers tried to mimic Germanys situation in the wws: Quickly take out the western enemies and then throw everything you got to the east, all the while your weak southern underbelly is threatened by a technologically and numerically superior enemy.

Against other barbarian faction spear warband for the win.
Against romans with legions of hastati type units, cavalry for the win.
Against Greek factions with falangs bowmans for the win.
Against nomad factions with horse archers, you add warhounds and gg.
Easy. Their army is the best in the game in my opinion, only problem is low building lvls which cause problems with disorder in large empire. But that problem is solved in a lot of moded versions of the game.

Best barbarian roster (only contested by scthia), only decidedly beaten by romans Seleucids and Egyptians in terms of overall quality... but one of the worst starting locations. expanding to anywhere else makes them insane.

Germania is the best faction in the game by virtue of being the German faction.
    No, I'm totally not biased.
The same is true for Napoleon (Prussia is the allrounder of the "big 3", Austria is somewhat of a mini Prussia), Medieval 1 (the Germans have everyting you want) and Medieval 2 (actually true, the HRE is the best faction bar none and meta defining in every set of rules I know).
Yeah, Germania is the strongest Barbarian faction in 31k rules.
All of this is from an online MP perspective.

Thanks for the comment. I don't have that much experience from MP, so that is always interesting to read :)
