    I find that one of the best strategies for the Julii is combining basically all your units, attacking segesta while you build a few more biremes, then try to capture Carthage, which is surprisingly easy and that gives you another very powerful city.

      I just did this and it opens up invasions from Dacia, Thrace, and Gauls or Britons.
      Basically anyone from the north wants a slice of Roman cake.
      Personally, I attacked Carthage simply because I wanted triarii.

    Taking the area to immediately to the east (dalmatia, illyria and pannonia)are easy enough to defend using the river crossings and forts. Out of those three dalmatia and illyria are gold producing provinces so their trade income can be fairly significant once they can start building decent ports and roads.

    Every problem people have with the Julii can be fixed if you take Carthage. You basically can lock the scipii out of getting territory. I even took Sparta after Carthage and got a good foothold in each of the other Roman territories and it made fighting them pretty easy

    I see two ways to play the julii, go west and take gaul, spain and than take out the britons and germania, by this time marian reforms will have happened and civil war is going to be close....
    The other way would be to still fight the barbarians but also trying to expand in africa and greece because there's richer cities and also to weaken the other romans.... altough it kind of makes the civil war very easy and anti climatic

    • @MrJoao0980
      @MrJoao0980 4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Yeah I agree, if you go for the Greek and African expansion by the time of the Civil War you are so powerful that it becomes a steamroll, it also leaves the other Roman AI mindless because they don't know where to expand

    I really don't see what the point is in having high taxes early game. Unless it's on one of the richest cities in the game it's probably not gonna make any difference (the 300 more gold your earning is literally nothing) and it means you have to wait longer for high tier units

    • @HouseOfAlastrian
      @HouseOfAlastrian 3 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Another reason I am uncomfortable with jacking up tax rate in a city in Italy is that the sooner you can max out the tier of one of your Italian settlements, the sooner you get the Marian Reforms. You don't really have to build every building available right away... just whatever you need to reduce squalor and raise public order, and one troop production building, specializing that city and its neighbours for different types of troop.

    On VH I always try to beat Brutii and take Sparta, Corinth, Athens first...leave on the boats with faction leader and every unit except the other generals, one hastatii, and the town watch...you can still take Segesta and fight Gaul with Generals and one unit of Hastatii 😆 🤣

  • @HouseOfAlastrian
    @HouseOfAlastrian 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Another thing I like to do once I take Mediolanium and Patavium is to lower their tax rate and encourage the population to grow. Due to their naturally high population growth, I will crank out peasant armies from these cities and send them to the cities deeper into the barbarian frontier to build them up faster. This greatly alleviates one of the inherent weaknesses the natural expansion direction of the Julii has... namely the territory they conquer being so poor and sparsely populated.
    You'll still make more money from trade if you conquer Greece and North Africa, but at least you won't be too disadvantaged economically this way when the civil war comes if you decided to let the Brutii and Scipii expand in their natural directions.
    A bold move would be to lock down Africa and Greece first and then use that wealth to build up the barbarian territories you then conquer in your own direction since they will be easier pickings than Pontus and Egypt. Then the civil war will be over with pretty quickly.

    In my VH/VH difficulty Julii campaign, I found that it's entirely possible to cut off both the Scipii and Brutii factions' expansion paths. The first thing you do is load Flavius, Lucius and their armies onto your starting fleet and ship them towards Caralis and Lilybaeum. If you're fast enough, you can snatch Syracuse from the Greeks before the Scipii show up. After that, North Africa is yours to take. You also have to immediately build a port in Ariminum and ship Vibius and Quintus off to take all of Greece starting with Salona and Thermon. I wasn't able to take Appolonia because the Brutii got there first. The one problem with the plan is that I had delay my expansion into Gaul for until I could train up another force in Northern Italy. It does pay off though because it makes the civil war later on much easier.

    Spain and Thrace tend to remain allies until LATE game, so just be a good diplomat and dont start wars but end them. and you should have a near subjugated/ allied province in the west.
    spain is far to take over, and alot of money will be saved in subjugating them or blocking them with a strong army at the northern entrance to spain>
