Disassembling The Giant Rear Axle on The Bedford Truck & An Unexpected Eviction Notice ...

- #40 - It's mostly about the massive rear axle this week as Tim battles to take the whole thing apart and figure out how everything works. Once it's all in pieces, the restoration work begins.
We also finish the petrol tank, get on with some more zinc plating (When will it ever end?) and then, completely unexpectedly, we are dealt a massive curveball with an eviction notice from our home ... Well, gee, thanks for that, Mr. Landlord.
It's all sent to try us, as Lisa's mum would say, so join us for another instalment from The Barn on A Farm and keep everything crossed that we will overcome this latest of fun obstacles ...
...
We are Lisa & Tim and for the last 2 years we have been busy restoring this 1975 Bedford Firetruck which, in a moment of madness, we bought at the end of 2020 with the dream of turning it into an off grid rolling home on wheels. The dream is still alive ... just. After a few ups and downs, we are currently at the business end of this full on nut and bolt restoration. Having taken literally everything apart, we recently finished the arduous task of cleaning up and painting the 22ft chassis frame, and now we are working our way through all the stuff we removed from it ... From the engine to the humblest washer, it's all getting the star treatment. We're getting close. But for now, it's all in bits, and we're just taking it one day at a time ...
...
This channel is the story of us, Tim & Lisa, and our attempt to build the World's Greatest HOUSE-on-WHEELS on the World's Smallest Budget ... A unique motorhome, if you like, part vintage 70s, part off road overlander, all tiny home on wheels.
We are 2 'old enough to know better' artists from Cornwall in the UK, and together we are building this off-grid home on wheels from the remains of a 1975 Bedford Firetruck.
We bought the truck on eBay at the end of 2020 and had it delivered by an even bigger truck to a huge, old barn-on-a-farm we are renting to use as our workshop whilst we undertake this challenge.
Well, several months and a few set backs later, we’re currently in the process of ‘lovingly’ restoring the base vehicle, taking the whole thing apart, piece by rusty piece, so we can make it all new and shiny again, before we embark on the even bigger task of building a home on its back out of nothing more than grit, imagination, sweat, tears and possibly a bit of magic and wishful thinking!
Oh, and tea!
Subscribe to the channel and join us in our workshop and we promise it will be nothing if not value for money … it’s free, you see?
New video every second Saturday. Grab a cup of tea, Subscribe and join us on our quest ...

I was Told that the journey is just as good as the destination. Life can deal some hard knocks, but while ever you have a plan you will both succeed. I am amazed by your new found skills and determination with this very important project. Thank you both for sharing your journey.
Thanks, Ian. That’s very kind of you to say. Thanks for watching and for commenting. The road is long with many potholes and flowers along the way, but mostly (mostly!) we are enjoying the journey 😎🚚👍🏻
So sorry to hear about the no fault eviction. I thought the government was supposed to be doing away with that! As we are in the south west too we are all to aware of the problems people down here are having renting. On the axle, I'm no expert but I have been a lorry driver all my life and I would mention that when painting brake drums keep the mating surface of the drum and wheel unpainted. This helps prevent the dreaded loose wheel nut syndrome that plagues lorry's, especially the older ones with the conical wheel nuts.
Thanks for the advice on the brake drums. I will tell Tim what you said 👍 You're also right about the changes coming on the no fault evictions. Too late for us though, unfortunately, which is probably why our landlord has decided to cut his losses. This property needs a serious amount of work which was flagged recently when we were flooded, and it seems he just isn't willing to dig into his pockets. Total nightmare for us, but I'm sort of looking forward to caravan life for a while. ☺
Hi guys, I have been speeding through this series, I have to admit I’ve cut out a lot of the chit chat as I’m more into the restoration work itself. Can I just say, I really and sincerely take my hat off to you both, what you have done is far and beyond what I was expecting and really is more than a restoration. I understand it is hard work but really the attention to detail is more like you would expect from a professional outfit. Can’t wait to see the remaining episodes.
Thanks for watching the back catalogue, as it were. Quite a bit to wade through! The challenge was always to do as high a quality job as possible on our virtually non existent budget, so I guess we’re in it for the long haul. We’re looking forward to doing some really nice creative details in the later stages, so stay tuned. Thanks for the sub, much appreciated 👍🏻😎
You're right about "nothing can't be solved with a nice cup of tea"... I seem to be drinking lots of tea lately which seems to keep the wolves at bay !! Great determination and courage you both have in your project and life in general. Carry on and the world is your oyster..
It means a lot to us to read comments like this. Thanks so much for your support. We will be releasing some new videos by the end of this month. After a long time away from the project sorting out our move into a caravan, we are now pretty much back at it. Fueled by tea, naturally 😁👌🏻
Great watch… and great spirit throughout
Thank you :)
You certainly are a very nice lady. You actually remind me of my grandaughter. I'm very interested in this project you two have going. Impressed with the plating also.
Aww, how nice 😊 Thanks for watching. Glad you’re enjoying the project 👍🏻🚚
Sorry to hear about your housing troubles, hopefully it is all sorted soon. Elsie is beautiful! We had our last cat Jess for 20 years, so I understand how much important they are to the family. Best wishes for Christmas and I hope all the stars align for you and things all work out.
Thank you. Yes, they are the heart and soul of the house, aren't they? I miss my other cat, Fred, so much since we lost him last year, so Elsie is now spoiled rotten. Hopefully she will enjoy her retirement sunning herself in a caravan, as it seems more than likely that is what we'll be doing. Should make for 'interesting' viewing! A very happy Christmas to you too, and thanks for all your lovely comments this year. Much appreciated.

Take the inner collars of the wheel studs, undo both drum securing screws and beat the drum off the hub
Thank you. Will pass this info on to The Tim.
