  • #51 - We are Lisa & Tim of Old Rope Salvage and we are in the process of restoring this 1975 Bedford Firetruck into what we hope will one day be a spectacular rolling home on wheels. In the meantime, Lisa is taking a bit of a break from the project (sorry to leave you alone with him, folks, but hang in there!) whilst her forgetful other half gets to grips with some of the tangled bits of metal which apparently used to be the brake lines, and attempts to fabricate something new and shiny from the wreckage. Accidents aside (!) he’s doing a fabulous job. So sit back and enjoy, make sure to subscribe, leave an encouraging comment, and we promise that Lisa will be back tending to his injuries in no time …

    This channel is the story of us, Tim & Lisa, and our attempt to build the World's Greatest HOUSE-on-WHEELS on the World's Smallest Budget ... A unique motorhome, if you like, part vintage 70s, part off road overlander, all tiny home on wheels.
    We are 2 'old enough to know better' artists from Cornwall in the UK, and together we are building this off-grid home on wheels from the remains of a 1975 Bedford Firetruck.
    We bought the truck on eBay at the end of 2020 and had it delivered by an even bigger truck to a huge, old barn-on-a-farm we are renting to use as our workshop whilst we undertake this challenge.
    Well, several YEARS and a few set backs later, we’re currently in the process of ‘lovingly’ restoring the base vehicle, taking the whole thing apart, piece by rusty piece, so we can make it all new and shiny again, before we embark on the even bigger task of building a home on its back out of nothing more than grit, imagination, sweat, tears and possibly a bit of magic and wishful thinking!
    Oh, and tea!
    Subscribe to the channel and join us in our workshop and we promise it will be nothing if not value for money … it’s free, you see?
    New video every two weeks (or thereabouts ... we do our best, you know?) Grab a cup of tea, Subscribe and join us on our quest ...

    Top banana, Tim and Lisa! Great explanation and wise choice to replace and agree with the choice of materials. It's daft that vehicles don't come from new with copper pipes instead of steel. Anyway, great work and great explanation. I've always tended to leave the pipe a little long and only trim to size once I'm ready to fit the second end coupler and then flare, as you say in that order!
    I'm still catching up on your earlier vids, but this popped into my feed and I feasted! I note this episode featured a fab looking chassis etc. I tried to look away at those points, but I honestly couldn't. It's looking amazing.

      Ah! Spoilers! Yes indeed, it is looking great, but oh the pain it took to get there, well worth going back and watching those episodes 😂 Still, we’ve come a long way. Huge thanks for watching and catching up with the back catalogue. 😎

    OOOOhhhh big tease on the engine! I am feeling inadequate now having just totally messed up bending a new clutch line (little skinny thing) for my MG! I blame it on videos being released on Tuesdays.....luckily I am on half term so I don't know what day it is anyway! Looks fantastic but looking forward (!) to watching you bleed that little lot!

      Haha! Tim said he was thinking of you when he made this video and hoped it might help you with the MG. He also says he’s ’looking forward’ to bleeding the lines, because if he reaches that point, it means he’s finished making them AND found the replacement wheel cylinders which are currently eluding him! 😆

    And just when I was asking myself, what’s the reason for ‘flaring’ a pipe? Along comes a Tim tech talk explaining everything marvellously as usual 👏🏼🙏🏻 ☺️ Great video, good to see the algorithms inserting Mr Kipling Adverts too! 🍰☕️😄 x

      😆😆😆 Believe me, Lucy, it was a mystery to me as well (Lisa! Obvs!) But even I understood it by the end. Funny about the Mr Kipling advert too. You might remember that Tim has a lifelong grudge against Mr Kipling after finding out that Mr Kipling isn’t actually real. I think it was his version of Santa Claus 😆

    Yeah, doing brake lines is fun. I started last year replacing and renewing the brakes on my 1967 Mercedes LA 911. Waiting on the mud season to finish, so I can lie under the Truck and get on with it.
    Great, you replaced everything new. Also, you learn where they all go and what they do.
    Enjoying watching the work

      Ah, mud season! Will it ever end? Fingers crossed that spring arrives for you soon. And yes indeed, taking everything apart in this way has been the best way of learning how everything works and where it all goes, could not agree more. Thanks for watching 😊

    Hi Tim enjoyed the video you’ve done amazing work. Are all the wheels finished and fitted?? What colour are you going to paint the engine?? Have you fitted the rear prop shaft and the transfer box?? Keep up the good work 👍👍

      @OldRopeSalvage  6 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Hi Alex 😁 We are waiting for the weather to warm up so we can finish painting the last 3 wheels. The transfer box and prop shaft have indeed been finished and fitted and as for the engine … well, you will just have to wait and see 😉 I am working on the engine now so shouldn’t be too long. Cheers for watching as always 😎

    Hi guys, well the job is coming together very nicely, those brake lines certainly were like a plate of spaghetti, just remember Tim, us men can do anthing by ourselves🤔 with good supervision that is, best regards to you both from a Kiwi living in Australia

    Thanks Tim, excellent timing for me, I have to do some brakes on my project car. It is great to get a refresher on double flaring.

    Not teaching you how to 'suck eggs' Tim, but I would make dam sure to check tighten all the brake lines once everything is in. Slightest bit of brake fluid (God forbid) on all that new paintwork doesn't bear thinking about... 😭 Great vid as ever and cannot wait to see the engine installation. Now that will be a vid and a half. Keep on trucking!!! 👉🚒👍

    • @OldRopeSalvage
      @OldRopeSalvage  6 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Haha! Yes, that would be a very tragic day indeed and would probably involve some crying 😭 He said that’s why he’s done a lot of powder coating, as it is apparently more resilient to brake fluid! The engine has now been wheeled out onto the shop floor, as it were, so watch this space … Glad to hear you’re still enjoying the vids 😎🤟🏻
