    • @SoulSoundMuisc
      @SoulSoundMuisc 4 ปีที่แล้ว +49

      I'd be inclined to agree if Space Hulks could be piloted. They really can't, they just drift through the warp (in warp time) and pop out now and then.
      Yes they tend to have atmosphere, and are so massive they have their own gravity and ecosystems and can support all manner of life.
      The passengers are helpless though, adrift and unable to control where it goes or when it gets there. Less a ship and more a mass of ghost ships.

    • @xara505

      @@SoulSoundMuisc That's a pretty good point.
      That said, where do we then draw the line for what is a ship and what is not? Reapers are described as sentient starships and possess no true "crew", "cockpit", or "life support systems". I feel that the general gaming community likely still considers them ships.
      I still think that Space Hulks deserve (at least) an honorable mention for that reason. They are frequently described as "an amalgam of starships", too.

      @@xara505 Replying backwards, here.
      I DO agree that Space Hulks should get an honorable mention. They're iconic. They've had games based on them. They're a part of the 40K Universe and not as a little footnote.
      To your point about other large iconic vessels, I have to take those on a case by case basis.
      Reavers, to me, are artificial lifeforms akin to an eldritch horror from the Lovecraftian mythos. Enormous, alien, self aware.
      But what about Leviathans from Farscape? They're 'living ships', but they don't exist as ships in the wild. More "giant space whale" than real ship, but they're used as ships and required special empathic links and pilots and retrofits to be used as such.
      Those subjects do get a bit sticky... and is one of the reasons I love good science fiction so much.
      Is an Eldar Craftworld a ship? An artificial planet? A fast moving station? A semi sentient being with its own desires? All four?

Sure, Jupiter and Saturn both have moons that are larger, however, those planets completely dwarf Earth. If I recall correctly, Titan, a moon orbiting Saturn is roughly the same size as Earth while Saturn completely dwarfs Earth. The reason why Earth has an larger than normal moon compared to it is because when Earth was forming, it actually had a twin we named Thea. This planet crashed into ours and ripped a massive chunk out of Earth which we now know to be our moon.

It was 500km across. It had sheilds, engines, a jump drive (and is observed jumping in the game and described in detailed in the books) and weapons, life support, etc. High Charity is absolutely a ship. • @Debbiebabe69
      @Debbiebabe69 6 ปีที่แล้ว +74

      Why does 40k always win?
      Simple.
      If you want to create a ridiculously large ship in SW/ST etc, you have to show it flying through space, to scale, firing at the thousands of tiny little ships around it, those ships exploding and thier crews getting sucked into cold hard space, the large ships itself taking fire, its shields buckling, parts of it exploding and the crew evaporating, and this ship itself succumbing to enemy fire and going bang.
      For 40k, you simply open word, and start your new novel along the lines of ''The company of guardsmen boarded the Sir Raoul Moat, a grand battleship 500 Jupiters long and 150 Jupiters tall, boasting over 1 million heavy naval lascannon for defence''.
      Creating that huge SW/ST ship would cost million of dollars in special effects.
      I just created an even bigger 40k warship in about 10 seconds of typing, far more powerful than anything in the SW/ST universes - and probably existing 40k too.

Them ridiculously oversized 40k ships, they only exist in writing (and yes there are also SW ships that only exist in writing too). As for my ship, the Sir Raoul Moat does exist now because I have just created it ;)
      And no, im not anti-GW, owning armies for games as far back as 2nd edition 40k, 4th edition WH, as well as for the original Adeptus Titanicus and Space Marine games - including four Imperator and three Banelord titans.

      I'm gonna have to disagree with you there. If time lords or Daleks even tried to go back in time to fight the 40K universe, they would lose simply because there was no time in which every single empire in 40K was vulnerable. They could probably stop the Tau and Imperium, but they would still need to deal with the Eldar, Orkz, Necrons, or even the Old Ones which were super advanced and directly or indirectly MADE the Eldar, Necons, and Orks. They could be quantified as the "Old Gods" if needed.
      Plus, What are the Time Lords or Daleks going to do before even those factions come into existence? Search ever planet in existence for even the smallest trace of that life and wipe it out? Would it even be possible for them to survive at that time?
      And don't even get me started on the Warp, another faction they would have to deal with. The moment Time Lords or Daleks get into that universe, The Warp will take all their fears and expectations and twist them into unrecognizable deamons.

    6:10 Death Stars were far from stationary so to describe them as starships is actually more accurate than "battle stations"... They could travel from one side of the galaxy within the day in hyperspace, or use their sublight engines to zip past a 200,000km gas giant like Yavin prime within half an hour. They have guns to destroy capital ships and shield sto defend.
    The term battle station is used in awe of their size which is, literally, millions of times greater than that of a star destroyer or more than a hundred thousand times larger than a command ship like the 19km Execuator.

      The asteroid was designed as a way to move a large number of people between two planets. The Death Star wasn’t. It carried large amounts of people to service and protect the Station, but that wasn’t its actual purpose. It was also repeatedly called a battle station by the Imperials who were stationed aboard it, which basically settles it in my mind.

      Callum Trott, do we know if the point of the mobility aspect of the Halo rings was for them to be moved at will or was it primarily meant to get the ring into its designated position and then keep it from drifting off f that spot? If the latter is true, I’m not sure we can make the case that it is a ship rather than a station.

      I disagree, 40K ships are on the whole larger than Star Wars ones. Escort ships like Corvettes are about 1km long in the IOM, which is a similar size to the Victory Class Star Destroyer.
      Dreadnought-sized Star Destroyers, like the Executor SSD, are mostly up to 9km long & are rare in the SW Universe. The IOM has plenty of Grand Cruisers & Battleships of a similar size, up to 8km, as well as larger ships like the Gloriana-class Battle Barge which easily ranges in size from 15km up to over 26km in length, & there were originally at least 20 Gloriana-class.
      Larger ships do exist in 40K, from Abaddon's Planet Killer, through the moon-sized Phalanx, to the Imperator Somnium, a ship so big it can disturb the orbits of planets just by entering a star system indelicately.
      Yet probably the biggest is the Necron World Engine, literally a ship the size of a planet.

The word bearers also built three gargantuan kingships, stated to make the macragge's honour and other gloriana class warships look like toys and possibly be a match for the phalanx in terms of firepower. 40k takes stuff from other sci-fi universes and makes it truly epic. In Warhammer, ships the size of Imperial Star Destroyers, are called simply Destroyers/Frigates and are relegated to escort roles of the really big ships within a fleet. A single light cruiser from 40k, outclasses all but the most powerful warships in other universes. I just covered the 40K escort vessels, and Star Wars, Star Trek and Halo have nothing to offer to match the ships of the line that serve within the Imperial Navy. A superstar destroyer for example might look formidable, but when you see that is designed to bully lesser vessels, it will have no chances against... for example...a Retribution class battleship.

    • @savage7882
      @savage7882 5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I wouldnt say that. You really have to look at the purpose and capabilities of each ship to compare them. The empire from star wars has a ship classification that outclasses any imperium ship, mainly because it has a superlaser capable of cracking planets. The unsc's mac cannons are also ridiculously powerful in general, able to tear 20km ships in half

    • @zaho87
      @zaho87 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@savage7882 The vast majority of the fleets of each faction are made mostly of smaller sized ships such as cruisers and destroyers, where 40K holds the upper hand. Battleships, dreadnoughts and super carriers in general are the ultimate weapons, however, without a fleet support, they are useless. If we match up 40ks super capitals against other Universes, then a Gloriana class battleship will be unbeatable by all standards. McCragge's Honor for example has endured over 10 000 years of service and combat duty, and was hammered repeatedly with weapons that can destroy entire planets and even solar systems, a feat unmatched by any other capital ship of any other faction. Not to mention that the vessel was often matched up against other super capital ships, giving her crew an advantage that has to be considered. I am sure that the Eclipse and Infinity, which you referred to, are able to dish out some punishment, but they will not be able to withstand a prolonged fight against an enemy that can take more than a couple of hits from their main weapons.

    • @yulfine1688
      @yulfine1688 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      depends on the factions look9ng at forerunners and precursor tech...that's cheating, looking at halo the most well known that comes to mind is mon calamari and depending on what numbers are used its very hard to pin point exact shield strength of really either, same goes to Warhammer and well mass effect probably being the most useless with kinetic shielding being only good for many weapons that use kinetic energy which are considered to be unless youre talking about halo...quite weak. Start going into turbolaser size they differ in strength and can be adjusted in power to attack smaller ships or larger ships at least I would think. I would doubt they would always be firing at max power against something such as the millennium falcon. Considering what we know...each ones shields are strong enough to withstand up to massive asteroid to even small moon sized objects in movement. Depending on the size of the ship and the shield technology being used. if you stuck with the most common of each faction and weapons used against each other you can somewhat gather a relative shield strength for the main stream ships and with whats given. From there its just a numbers guess to what the actual force of impact each weapon gives. if you did all the math for it and then compare it to what Is given you could find the real impact force and strength of weapons and then compare that to a standard shield from the faction and sort of measure how much its able to take being either being broken through and destroying the ship or just breaking the shield. Then adding the numbers up with how many hits it could take and give a rough estimate of that shielding type for that ship type.

    • @Servellion
      @Servellion 6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Not sure. Halo's shields are pretty good, but they have to lower sections to fire. Granted when they do so isn't real apparent and is localized to the weapon system so the whole of the ship is still shielded.
      Star Wars has to chose between ray shield which blocks energy weapons and you can return fire just fine. Particle shields stop solid projectiles but must be lowered to fire. That's in the EU and the original trilogy. The last Jedi was NOT nice to capital ship weapons or the shields. The Raddus's shield work fine at range but did absolutely nothing to stop ships from getting under it and doing damage. Then again that may have just been their ray shields.
      Not super sure about Star Trek shields. Believe they're pretty good all around though they appear to be bubble shields as opposed to ship hugging which is a bad idea as the Raddus previously showed. Less of an issue as most ships in Star Trek are fairly small for star ships.
      Warhammer's shields are....weird. Like a lot of their shit. Especially Void Shields.
