@13:00 I've always liked Hikaru, but he starts talking here about selflessly giving back towards future bright chess players, (even sponsoring them himself) and I couldn't respect him more for that if I tried. Hats off to you, Hikaru.
Omg Hikaru’s answer about loving chess was such an honest answer and by the way the reason I love chess again it’s because of you two! So keep doing what you are doing! And good luck in the candidates
Just wanted to mention that Barry Sanders retired at age 31 not 36 or 37 as mentioned by Hikaru. A very young age with just over 1,400 yards shy of the all time rushing record.
Been following your games since 90s ICC "starwars" and "smallville" are what inspired me to play blitz and now 100000 games and 22 years later still looking after you Hikaru. Go be a champ. Just go do it like Nike told you to.
@@Nitidus IT was Hikaru's old handle on ICC or at least one of them. People were gathering to watch him since he was a kid. Crazy bullet and blitz games with everyone and crazy trash talk. Those games are still out there online somewhere.
Barry Sanders didn’t retire at age 36 or 37, he retired at 31 in his prime. He was 2 years younger than Magnus is now. Barry did amazing things with very little support around him. In that way, I think Hikaru would agree Barry is more like Bobby Fischer since Bobby’s accomplishments are even more astounding given that he had nowhere near the support structure of the Russian government chess juggernaut when he beat Spassky.
OMG. I can watch these 2 gentlemen talk about chess and life all day, everyday. I hope this becomes a regular thing, a weekly podcast perhaps. Love it guys! Thanks!
I really do appreciate that it's not about ego or fame for you - you just wanna be honest - be yourself - play chess - have fun - live life! Just super chill. That's what makes me a fan and a follower!
Great interview, guys! Now where's the 8 hour long podcast with both of you rambling on about everything from kinds of sushi to weather patterns in Florida or whatever? I would defenitely listen to it :D

It’s so clear that Levy and Hikaru are obviously good friends. Not that Levys interviews with the other candidates haven’t been good but these two make content together all the time and it’s just heartwarming to see a close dynamic they have. Rooting for you Hikaru, first American world champ since Fischer ✌🏼
Great interview by both of you! Love both of your channels and content. Good luck in the Candidates Hikaru! And love the Barry Sanders shout. Go Lions!
“I remember playing my uncle Leroy in Monopoly in 2006 at the Red Roof Inn where I was seeded last. He played the top hat variation of the Broadway opening. I was down $200 but ultimately sniped him with control of the railroads. Community Chest played in my favor also. It was interesting.”
Hikaru uses the tree method. As long as he is growing he competes to get as big as possilbe to reach the top - but as soon as full grown he gives nutrients to smaller trees around him
Hikaru wins the CANDIDATES, LTR doesn't CARE, then proceeds to beat Ding and is crowned the new Classical Champion. LTR doesn't care and goes back to streaming. LMAO
You are actually a good coach, I learned the London System from you, and your explanations were for me better than those of other chess youtubers I watch. I would wish you would make more tutoring videos.

I am happy to see a more mature Hikaru. I have known him since he was really young and played him all the time both on ICC and over the board. I am pretty sure he could be a great coach for younger players or even an assistant for other top levels in the future but I don't think he will choose that path.
Hikaru, Barry Sanders retired at only 31, he would have set the all-time rushing record so far that Emmitt Smith would have never surpassed it if he would have only played 4 more years.
I also used to root for Nadal - he was a force of nature and someone who would win with super-human effort. That said, Federer's game was so elegant and seemingly effortless. As for other luminaries, it was hard to like Djokovic, perhaps due to his on and off court persona.
Was great catching up, Hikaru :)
It was indeed fun to watch this
Indeed
Very entertaining to have an interview before an important tournament, similar to the Mango interview.
Pin of shame
Sander was only 31 when he retired
Rooting for you, Hikaru! Hoping you make it all the way.
