Exactly! He is a young, strong GM. But in the real world, outside of his room, it is an another story. He lacks discipline, manners, and if you say "chess speaks for itself" , why is he so loud? Look how Naka well dressed is, always a gentleman. Real and humble. And that kiddo shouldnt be offering coaching behind camera, on live broadcast. 100k each, hey, wait a moment. Better say "I worked as hard as I could, I am prepared, but I understand that I play versus players who are much longer in the game, one of the best players in history, and I will give everything I got. I understand it is a hard challange, but I am so glad that I accomplished to be here, but also there is a lot of room to grow, and I will try to become a number 1 in the future." @@alensmolcic7711 your English is fine. I’m a stupid ass American with one language. Do not apologize. He is young and arrogant from fighting a company and targeting others who have had their opinions.
Thus he’s made more enemies when he should have been making friends.
I’ve always felt bad for him but after levy’s interview… I’m glad Hans lost both matches…. I was 21, 14 years ago and was in a war zone.
I get having a fighter spirit and being resentful.
He needs to clear his head and get help and he will not get that from Kramnic. I’m probably spelling his name wrong but idc. I can’t stand him.
Either way, Hans is very strong and could be stronger if his focus was different.
He was so sure he would come in and smack everyone in the mouth because he beat them online. When the real world smacked him in the mouth.
I hope he learns. If not he’s just going to stay bitter

The last five minutes really reminded me of what Totalbiscuit used to say. He was a pretty well-known Starcraft 2 commentator in the early stage of his career, and one of the things he said was important as a commentator was to create the "story" of an event. Not to force drama but rather explain to the viewer why an event and matchup is interesting. If there was an underdog, the commentators needed to push that narrative to the viewers to make it interesting. Starcraft 2 players were never especially charismatic or media trained so it was especially important that you had interesting commentators to make the entire event interesting for the viewer. I feel like chess is in a similar spot, and your role is really important to keep the games interesting. Commentating is an art form, and you did a great job!

Statisticians did not "confirm he didn't cheat over the board." They did not find definitive evidence that he did. Those are dramatically different statements. Those statistical models are also very limited for the amount of information a top level chess player needs in order to win.
Hans was an extremely good online chess player. He still cheated prolifically, and lied about it (as confirmed by the statisticians you worship, like Regan- see FIDE EDC report.)
Hans is an extremely good OTB player. This does not prove he did not cheat intermittently OTB, particularly early on in his career, when it was much more uncertain whether he could play chess OTB professionally, and played numerous extremely suspicious games (when he was far weaker! Where are all those incredible computer like games now??)

I wonder if this is to the detriment of chess as a sport. In other sports categories, whenever someone is caught cheating they are usually banned. I know it’s kind of rare but it happens. For example Lance Armstrong is a high profile one that comes to mind. Also it tends to happen related to drug use, cheating, betting, manipulating outcomes etc. I think that Hans has fully embarrassed himself at this point and is struggling for sponsors. So he has paid a price. Here is a list of athletes that have been banned. I’m sure it’s not comprehensive.

So this is about "not letting him off the hook no matter how many years have been spent."

You missed the subtlety of what I was saying. In the end I think even though he should be banned, I also don’t believe the Chess federations will ban him because he has done a lot to increase interest in chess. Everyone likes controversy and a rivalry. 90,000 people were watching the matches online live. Not bad.

Goooo Hikaru! My second-favourite player after Magnus!
Hikaru's a legend! Looks like such a nice guy too - down-to-earth and with a good sense of humour!

Did a small part of Hikaru's sub-conscience want him to lose in the semis so he could stomp Niemann in the consolation match?

I think he’s wanted to dunk on Hans for quite sometime, but I don’t think a player at this level ever thinks ‘I should lose this semi final so I can play the probable loser on the other side of the bracket.’ Just a welcome consolation
