Have enjoyed this version for a zillion years as it was from the Roulette series of albums , I believe. His playing has inspired me for the last 50 yrs. Having a lot available here is icing on the cake. I don't hear a problem with the lower notes.
I agree with too much high register. Its like Mariah starting in the 4th octive and staying there. Some of his earlier works such as Country Road and Give it One are really great with that big band sound and just enough hi range. I have seen Maynard in concert many times and he put on a great show always bringing young new talent, guys that were really awsome, including other instruments as well as hi register trumpeters.
Maynard needed something similar to "Ole" so he didn't have to keep doing the same songs. This is very close to that one, but different enough to be a hit with his fans.
Lighten up Orodeslll. If there was only one "right" way to play a piece of music, we'd only need one recording of each piece, and how dull would that be? Playing it differently doesn't destroy anything; the other versions still exist. It simply adds another option.
I myself have some criticisms of Maynard's work after he jumped ship to Columbia and other labels after that (though much of the Columbia work was quite good). But as far as I can tell, almost all criticism I have read of his work prior to that, especially that on the Roulette label, is just a bunch of NARROW MINDED / SOUR GRAPES!! Same comment on arrangements ... Willie Maiden, Don Sebesky, Slide Hampton, and others were VERY good arrangers. You guys need to listen to Maynard's Mercury, Roulette, and Mainstream recordings before you criticize.
plasticgunlover, a lot of us like Maynard's arrangements, but it's definitely not universal. I hated the whole "screech horn"/screaming style for ages, being more of a Mendez/Hirt fan. And he didn't have the loyal fan base he deserved. But I appreciate his music, now. And amcdon12 is right, Maynard didn't overblow the upper register. He never needed to. I wish he was still with us. He was a genuinely nice man and I'm sorry I only got to meet him shortly before he passed away.
I hate Maynard Ferguson's arrangements. Do any trumpet players like this dude? I wish I could do what he does, but I never liked the over blowing in the high registers that he is so famous for. Just give me some Allen Vizzutti please...
@plasticgunlover Are you insane? He's not overblowing in his upper register. He makes that sound easy!! If anything, it's his LOWER register he is overblowing in. Vizutti can do this too,but his upper register sounds nothing like maynard. Both are amazing players, but Maynard has way better control. ... 4:09 is where you can hear problems with low notes. But his upper register? come on...use your hear.... Not trying to disrespect you or anything.
Great 👍

Bougt this LP when I was young, the LP was used, ca 66. Dag
Don Rickles anyone?
James Grange yup
Same here,beautifull and proud song.

@OrodesIII Maybe they were going for more of a "jazzy" feel? I get the "pan flute tent at the state fair" kind of feel though I'm afraid.

Amen to that!
The piano player? DO NOt SHOOT HIM! Bought this recording in 66. Still play it. Dag
Do you remember the title of the LP?
DON RICKLES
I'm here because Don Rickles. Roast in Peace

2 words. DON & Rickles.
QUE VIVA LOS TOROS!!!
yeah, i love maynard, but i think this one sounds better without the jazz
i would not want to live on the difference between maynard and arturo sandoval at their best
I dont understand why people click dislike xD i know that people cant bether play then him

Sandoval? Vizzuti? Ferguson?
Keep em, in regards to this piece.
I'll take Rafa Mendez any day for Virgen.
This is the most interesting arrangement so far
onde posso arranjar este arranjo???

No no no. No veneran a la Virgen.
I like a lot of Maynard's stuff. But, I think this sounds like crap and is little more than album filler. One listen through is more than enough.
Your nuts !!!! Can you do this ???? It's sounds amazing.
This is an amazing arrangement of a classical piece that converts to a jazz feel. Maynard sounds insane in the cadenza at the end. Just enjoy it.
I'll take Wayne Bergeron for really clean upper-register work. Slotted and dead-on.
No
Maynard is a high flying maniac with no net and I love it
