    I know these Ordnance Overview videos don't get as many views as some of my other content. But I really enjoy making these and covering topics that are not as common as guns and ammo. I would have loved finding this info when I was a weird kid enamored by ordnance. Thanks for watching

    First let me say thanks for the video, I really appreciate your content. I had a decent understanding of what they were but not how they worked. Now I know. Secondly I’ve got an igniter I bought off another collector that looks identical to an M81 but doesn’t have any markings. I wonder if it was originally a sterile item or if the stampings simply wore off. I’d be happy to share pics if anyone thinks they can ID it. Lastly, my igniter is missing the safety cord/pin. I know I could just improvise one but if anyone has an extra laying around I’d be super grateful

      Your likely had the yellow ink markings rub off. I have an older green one that all the markings rubbed off. I'll look around for a pin, not sure if I have any spares.

    you can take the used live ones apart and use those pop caps inside for a nice working replica! need to make sure you have the little metal bit that goes into the plastic piece that holds the primer.

    Nice. I have been meaning to pick some of these up. Got to be on top of it when they do show up.

      Yeah I missed out on a bunch of them a few years ago. I remember seeing them all over the place about 15 years ago at a huge militaria show. Now they are hard to find.

      @@ChevTecGroup I believe it is because the BATFE designated them as UXO some years back on certain conditions. My local SWAT team goes through tons of flashbangs and stingballs but while they will give me 40mm junk and expired/compromised ballistic inserts, I can't get the igniters or even the bodies unless it is work related.

    • @ChevTecGroup
      @ChevTecGroup  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@DaveSmith-cp5kj interesting. I know different field officers will give contradicting info. The local PD that shares my gun club's range left all sorts of CS gas, smoke, flashbang and stingball grenades laying around. Used of course, but I a box of them after another member got most of the good stuff.

    • @DaveSmith-cp5kj
      @DaveSmith-cp5kj 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@ChevTecGroup Oh wow, you guys have smoke grenades as well? Those are really high priced items, you should sell a few on gunbroker. Should easily go for well over $100 each regardless of the condition, especially since the BATFE is butthurt about smoke generators these days.
      When we were doing work during the riots, my partner didn't understand why during our down time I kept picking up all the hot spent tear gas cans off the curb. I just said I hate littering. lol

    • @ChevTecGroup
      @ChevTecGroup  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@DaveSmith-cp5kj lol. Yeah I sold most of my smokes on GB last year for about 200 bucks each. I had about a dozen extra and now I just have one of each kind I find for my reference collection. I think I bought 30 of them for 15 bucks each about 6 years ago.

    @Chevtec Group Hey man, just wondering why do they "Push in, quarter turn, pull?"

    • @ChevTecGroup
      @ChevTecGroup  ปีที่แล้ว

      I believe it is to make sure that the rod with the ring is fully clamped on the firing pin. The quarter turn probably confirms that the safety pin has been removed

    I wouldn't suggest trying to open a live primer, that's a good way to drill holes in your fingertips with hot gas. I'll bet you could get away with using a full power primer, I've made fireworks before that used a 209 shotgun primer to both launch and ignite visco safety fused salutes. If nothing else you could drill some small holes radially around the body where the primer exhaust sits to prevent overpressure. Cool video too, I didn't know that these even existed...

    • @ChevTecGroup
      @ChevTecGroup  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      If you use a full power primer you will Crack the body of the Igniter and it won't be re-useable. I sometimes learn the hard way. Someone was selling these years ago with 209 primers and people were getting hurt.
      Weakening a pistol primer isn't difficult but you do want to use proper safety precautions. Glasses, faceshield, and only work with tools, not bare hands. A pair of needle nose pliers to hold it and a pick work for removing the anvil and lessening the charge. Then you just re-seat the anvil. It can be done safely but is inherently dangerous.
      I don't like the vent holes idea because I am often holding these in my hand to initiate a charge down the line. But it could work. You also don't want the vent hole venting into your explosive.

    • @TheExplosiveGuy
      @TheExplosiveGuy 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@ChevTecGroup Ohh I didn't mean to imply you could use a 209 primer in something thing like that lol, you'd blow your fingers off haha, just that it would ignite the fuze. And I've got to be honest this is the first time I've ever heard of someone opening a pistol primer to weaken it so forgive me if I'm a little leary lol. I just know how much power primers have and respect them quite a lot. I built a little bolt action .177 BB gun when I was a teenager that used 209 primers, it shot around 1500 fps, _those_ things are powerful.
      It's too bad the bodies of those igniters are plastic, if it was aluminum or steel it could handle the pressure...

      @@ChevTecGroup I had a bucketful of fired fuse igniters about 40 years ago a friend gave me, and these actually did have a 209 primer in them. The insert they were in, was green like the body and it took a half twist to seat it... They must have not been full power primers.

    • @ChevTecGroup
      @ChevTecGroup  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Wow that's interesting. I had a friend tell me that he bought one in a "kit" that came with a 209 primer and they while thing blew apart in his hands. Even a regular small pistol primer will crack the tube on an m81.

    • @Jreb1865
      @Jreb1865 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@ChevTecGroup Yea, I actually bought a box of 100 - 209 shotgun primers to reload them. Sounds like it turned out to be a good thing I never did...lol That's why I was a little confused when in your vid you were writing abou using small pistol primers.
      My house burned and I lost everything including the ignitors. I kept most all of my reloading supplies in my storage bldg to keep it all out of the house. Good thing I lived out in the country...😂

    I have an M-60, I have no idea if it is live. I was worried it may go off from mishandling. So it is not a M-60 blast? just an igniter?

    • @ChevTecGroup
      @ChevTecGroup  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yeah they just have a primer in them. The M60s are only for timed fuse I believe where the M81 can set off shock tube

    have you made any CAD files that could be shared for 3D printing of such a thing?

  • @adamchurvis1
    @adamchurvis1 ปีที่แล้ว

    Okay... how **EXACTLY** is one supposed to remove primer material from a live primer WITHOUT setting it off? And how is one supposed to get around the anvil set into the mouth of the primer? Please do answer this question.

    • @ChevTecGroup
      @ChevTecGroup  ปีที่แล้ว

      Pop the anvil out with a pick or needle nose. Scratch some primer material out with a toothpick, replace anvil. Do so with tools, not your bare hands, and with a piece of plexi glass between your face and you work table
