      Yes.. I have a band that wants me to play for them they play drop F and I think for trying out I'll just use a digitech drop and tune to drop A or drop G# and just bring it down artificially.. If it works out then maybe I can justify modifications for a proper drop F otherwise tuning a. 045-.125(or. 130) gets too floppy from the massive reduction in tension on the strings

    Cool comparison. I have worked on pitch shifting algorithms in the past. One thing to consider with such low tunings is that different pitch shifters will behave quite differently. I wouldn't be surprised if many couldn't even really 'see' the fundamental note at ~20hz. :)

    • @BaenaCarcosa
      @BaenaCarcosa  3 ปีที่แล้ว +16

      More or less yes, but I know that tuning so low is quite difficult for most basses so I figured this would be a useful way to show the benefits and how it sounds either way, even with the exact same bass

    • @XChristianNoirX
      @XChristianNoirX 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@BaenaCarcosa you should try pitch shifting a short scale bass down an entire octave. You'll be able to use a little bit thicker of a string at least. Also, you might be able to get aways with a P Bass pickup position... The main fear is latency, playing live... But if solved well, could fix this problem for everyone... Then run it though Neuro DSP parallax... Compare it directly, but also using optimal settings for the short scale and the dingwall separately.

    I feel like on the pitch shifted one, I can hear some small warbles every once in awhile on certain notes (especially ones held out for awhile) but to be honest I have no idea if I'd actually hear any difference once you layer the guitars on top. Also I feel like the one "properly" tuned had more note clarity but otherwise I think they'd both sound fine in a mix

  • @guichaky3918
    @guichaky3918 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Yeah man, very good video I always wonder about this issue, im curious though how it would sound in F# because of the extra tension probably the proper tuning will keep the extra low end but will probably have a little bit more of that pitch shifted clankiness , Because when you Drop tune you usually loose clarity on the note but gain in bawwahwiness of the open String

  • @terrinpeterson9899
    @terrinpeterson9899 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    Honestly, the brighter tone of the "thinner" strings with the pitch shifted down gave a better tone in my opinion, there was more of a resonance to them that was hitting just right for me. 🤘 Great video, Andrew BASSna.

  • @trog871
    @trog871 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    I feel as if the bridge cables have more body and a thicker low end to them than the pitch shifted ones. The pitch shifted ones, like some other people pointed out, have more clarity with the higher notes, but doesn't quite have that same low end punch you get when you are using the heaver strings. I personally think that the bridge cables sound better because of the extreme low end.

  • @TriodesPs111
    @TriodesPs111 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    ok id like to weigh in on this, the pitch shifted version has more highs content in the sound but cuz its a shifter, its feels like it breaks apart on the low string, the real strings tone is completely stable and doesnt break apart but due to the strings being thicker they have more dulled upper harmonic content and sound darker/duller so a little less clear kinda foggy but doesnt have the stutters of a shifter.
    what i have learned over the years from experience, is that to get an amazing chimey and clear tone you gotta keep the string gauge down, huge strings will just be your enemy when the goal is chime and clarity, even on a dingwall (if going super low like drop E). i would try lowering the string gauge on that low E tuned bass and use the thinnest strings i could get away with (maybe .150 gauge) and still have decent playability and use thinner picks to help prevent picking the strings to hard (helps to keep the low tension strings from going sharp in pitch due to to hitting to hard with the pick) and then compare the tone from that setup to the original. it should be even chimier and clearer.

    I feel like the true tuning bass has more low end to it (particularly on the lowest strings) but looses a bit of clarity and brightness on the higher strings whereas the pitch shifted bass is a bit brighter but with a loss of low end on the lowest strings. I'd say pitch shifting is best in this case if you're using primarily high strings and high notes, but if you want to Djent out on the low strings I think true tuning is the way to go. That being said though the difference isn't that big and both can sound phenomenal if played and mixed right. Excellent job with the video. Great playing and mixing and good choice of demo song. \m/

  • @interpreterofficial1556

    Hey Guys Im the Bass player of our band and i think that when you actually set up the bass for drop e you should set the tone up for the bass you are using. Ive been a folower of the channel for a while and the way he had tracked was with the drop A pitched down. Like he said it does have more of an attack but i also think that the bass tuned properly has way more low end and could be adjuested more in its own way. Overall I really enjoyed that you have put two different refrences of this tuning becuase of how challening this can be for bass players that play in this tuning.

  • @ericpurvis2262
    @ericpurvis2262 9 หลายเดือนก่อน

    I wonder if putting a compressor on the pitch shift would help with some of the attack to round it out more. As well as the pitch shift working for the higher and tremolo notes cause i feel that pitch shifters can only sustain so much before you get too many overtones that will make it mucky

    I use a pitch shifter to drop to B standard whenever I play something like Type O Negative, It allows me to stay in E so I can use light gauge strings and still have that tight feeling instead of having to use heavier gauge strings and drop whenever I want to play a specific song sings I’m not really a gear hoarder who has 10 different guitars that are all tuned to a specific tuning.

    The tuned down bass seems to have a better bottom end thickness to it. I'd say the pitch shifted one sounds a lot better when you were tremolo picking. I pitch shift my 7 string guitar down to drop E instead of using my 8 string which is tuned to drop E. Easier for me to play, and like I mentioned about the bass, tremolo picking sounds a lot more clear. The difference isn't very noticeable overall (though I do get a little more fuzz going the pitch shifted route)

    the shifted one sounds quite muddy and treble-y from the picking sound for a bass :P but uhm, i assume the pitch shift effect is on the 'dry signal' prior to applying all the other effects like distortion. i wonder if that muddiness can be even filtered out by a noise gate or band pass on the pitched sound prior to applying the rest of the effects.

    Tone-wise the Whammy DT actually has more clang texture, but I couldn't hear the note definition on either of them. This is one of the reasons why I don't like tuning below G0 even though we use 9-string guitars and everything. Just not fun to mix. Even we have lines we don't cross.
    Side note: Since your tuning is E1 on an 8-string guitar, why don't you just use standard tuning on the bass instead? It just so happens to be that exact threshold where bass playing in unison sounds way better.

    The real E bass has an insane low end, which is what bass is all about? Beautiful. The Digitech E bass has a gnarly mid-range, which might be better in some applications? Perhaps it's the method used to artificially pitch-shift down 2.5 steps. As others have mentioned, if artificially achieving this is your only option, then it would do just fine - especially in a live setting, I should imagine.

    Pitch shift sounded decent, if that's your only option to go low, but I'm looking to go low for reals. I'd love to hear slightly less crunch as well as fingers and some thumps if you ever do another one of these demos. The pick just doesn't activate and control the big strings in the same way as fingers in my experience.

    Ok so that wasn't with my studio headphones, but with hifi ones.
    There might be abetter low end on some parts, I couldn't make the difference on the main riff.
    And in the end if you don't have the money for a 2nd bass, or for new strings, a setup, etc, pitch shifting is 100% fine by me

    With headphones I do feel the thicker gauge sounds better but then again if your on a budget I think pitch shifting definitely does a pretty good job

    I feel like I enjoyed the sound of the "proper" tuned bass in this mix, but the pitch shifted version probably works better in a full band mix. I had a question, was it easier to play the parts with pitch shifted bass?

      @BaenaCarcosa  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      It is definitely easier to play thinner strings (for me) seeing as I am primarily a guitarist and there is just simply less string mass to move around

    The pitch shifted one loses note clarity especially in the lower notes. It just sounds a bit too rumbly and muddy whereas the proper tuning one had a more clear note definition. It'd be interesting to hear both of them in the mix though since that's where it matters the most. Great video man!

    I think at the end of the day, I would prefer the drop A bass with a pitch shifter and the Tyler pedal to bring those subs in more 🤔

    I prefer the properly tuned one but both sick

    Personally love/ prefer true tuning. I had to get use to my heavy ass gauge tho, but I play a true tune D#0 on my ibanez EHB1506MS which is only 35"/33" scale. Strings 1-5 are in drop G# then the 6th is the D#0. My band mates pitch shift their g# 7s to d# but I like have the strings ready to go

    BASSISTS!
    Perhaps one of you can help me out.
    In my band we're at a point where we need to drop tune our bass to that low E.
    We're looking for a drop tune pedal to use during practice sessions and live shows.
    I know that there are plenty of options out there to choose from, but I do have some concerns.
    1. Latency. I play guitar and I recall that my AxeFX's pitch block creates a bit of a latency, due to digital processing and 2. Tone degeneration. I've already read on a few forums about bassists complaining that as they drop tune on one of these pedals, they lose tone quality.
    A six string bass with custom string set is not exactly an option for us right now, so my question to you would be, which drop tune pedal would be best to use, that won't have any of the issues mentioned above?
    Thanks.

    My conclusion drawn from this is go for proper tuning if you have the means to but pitch shifting is a great option if you don’t.

    I think the "proper" one's lows are loose cuz the string gauge isn't thicc enough maybe if you use thicker gauge it will sound tighter

    Is it sad that I can hear the tension difference between the 2? The straight green with the 55-170 seems a bit crisper!

    To me at first blush, the pitch shifted tone has more overtones, presence, characteristic response, and penetrating quality, where as the drop tune has more blend, rumble, and mud that you would expect with the low tuning. I guess it would just depend on what you're looking for.......

    I was surprised by how much of a difference I could hear (years of practicing critical listening finally paying off lol). The drop tuned bass definitely has more pleasant harmonics compared to the pitch shifted bass, especially when it comes to the super low notes.
    That said if you're not comparing them side by side I don't know if I could tell yet. Just do what you have the resources to do haha.

    What is the exact tuning on each of the 5 strings on the drop tuned bass????

    • @BaenaCarcosa

      AEADG (pitch shifted down to EBEAD) for swirl, EBEAD for solid

    I remember playing on a 145 gauge string once and it felt super awkward. I can't imagine what that monstrous 170 is like. Hell, you probably need a lightsaber or something to clip the strings when you're putting them on!
    I'd personally pitch shift. Don't have to file anything down, don't have to mess with the bass's action at the nut or bridge, nor do you need something special like a Dingwall with their extended scale lengths. There's "cheaper" multiscale bass's out there, but they're still going to set you back $1,000.
    That sounded dope AF, though. Both sounded great. Couldn't tell the difference but isn't YT's audio super compressed?

    I downtune because intervals and chords can end up sounding awful and out of tune when using pitch shifting. Idk how it works but pitch shifting also sounds kind of nasally/throaty sometimes.
