- You've seen this tractor is the video "Unsung Heroes of a Tractor Pull: pullback tractor" This tractor belongs to my dad and I. We went to look at this tractor on March 9, 2008 and agreed to buy it. After several other financial trials and tribulations, we brought it home on October 18, 2008, where it immediately went to work (that very day to be exact) as pullback for our pulling club. We repainted it for the Senior Prom in April of '09. We've used it as pullback at all of BBFAC's pulls, since we got it. Any more questions you might have about it, just leave a comment and ask.

That turbo brought thousands of tears to my eyes!!!! I might get a 4520 in the future. I just got a 730 back into my family. Sounds awesome!!!!
No problem. You don't see nice machines these days. There are nice ones, but nothing beats a classic man.
Best sounding 4000 series yet!
Hey, you're welcome! I kinda enjoy making videos like these for all to see. And I'm proud to say this tractor still earns its keep around our farm, and has been featured in several of my other videos too.
Thanks for the ride!
My pleasure!
lots of fond memories about my uncle having a 4520 and having a folding top on it.
Love the shift and turbo whistle =)
Holy hell that sounds good!!!
I have some relatives with one of these...I've only ever seen it with dual rear wheels and a cab. I got to ride in it once, nothing like being behind the wheel of what was at the time John Deere's third biggest tractor.
Killer sound!!
I love the way it sounds when you pin it
I do too! ;-)
Very nice machine man
You'll find a 4520 cheaper than you'll find a 4320 or 4020. 45's were available with a Power Shift transmission and the 43's were strictly Synchro Range. This one is a Synchro Range. The 45's are much heavier than the 43's, and a good bit bigger too. This tractor tips the scales at 13,200#. It really comes down to personal preference. The 4520 was Deere's first factory-turbocharged tractor, and was "Turbo-Built" in every way imaginable.
Thankya man!
I spent a couple of long summers on a 4520 when I was home from college. Powerful, agile, easy to drive.
Ours had duals and a cab but no air conditioning but did have an AM radio.
Great tractor, but after 12-14 hours it got a little old. Especially the Saturday night I caught a buddy parking with his girlfriend on my way home. They'd been to the movie and I was still at work.
We put a set of duals on this tractor a few years after this video was made. Just recently took them off to haul it to shows. About a year ago, this tractor got a turbo and injection pump re-work. Got a video of it up, too. Had duals on it in that video.
Nice!
That old girl is a beauty! Looking at buying one for our farm or a 4620
god damn that an awesome sound.
@alldogz13 Hahaha thankya! Nice to hear about the 730, you should check out a few of the vids on our 720 Diesel puller, if you haven't already. Thanks for the comment, and for watching!
It was a BEAST in it's day!
Still is lol
hardly

also glad to see and hear the older Deere's still going strong!!! aim a tractor enthusiast at heart, but i grew up around and listening to John Deere's all my life so they are my favorites by far. do you bring this magnificent machine out to the Half Century of Progress show?
Very nice 4520. Have spent many hours on a 4320.@Karl2070, the difference between a 4520 and a 4620 is basically an intercooler, fuel delivery, and some possible block and piston upgrades, relocated fuel pump, etc.
the needed differences were as you noted but also the air filter system was graphically changed, valve rotators on intake and exhaust, larger radiator and fan with more effective air volume. The 4520s could make power but couldn't deal with the heat of making it, hence the intercooler on the 4620 and early 7020 engines. The 73 and up 7020 and the 4630 used a different intercooler design and an in line injection pump. My 71 4620 PS with 4300 hours turned 172 on the dyno for 3 hours in July with no heating issues but the Pyrometer was at 1000°, not exactly good or bad, just real warm.
+thegreenerthemeaner Thanks for the overview, was just generalizing for the most part, however your description is fantastic. I did not mention the old precleaner/ air filter set up on these as I remember it, most were changed out for something more simple on these 4520's. Sounds like you have a good 4620, I will look for a video on here of it if you have one, if not, hopefully one could be uploaded sometime for all to see.
nice
She sure is beauty. Are you the original owner? She reminds me of my Dad's 1968 4020D, which had a little bit wider, straight chrome stack and was also turbocharged. Dad had that and also a 1964 JD 4020D. When Dad and I would work the fields together he preferred the '64 and he usually put me on the '68, but I also ran the '64 sometimes. The '64 seemed to have more lugging power when plowing, etc. When you were going down the highway I could feel the old feelings again from many, many years ago.
How do you hold the camera while driving the tractor
@Hallaran Book says 122 on the PTO, but dad thinks this one had some work done to it before we got it, because he says it feels like more. He had a 4010 that he farmed at 140HP, and he says this 4520's just as powerful as it was if not more.
No, that's actually the water temp. gauge. The original one in the dash reads way high. The dash gauge says it's wverheating when the temp is actually about 160
Thanks for all the comments folks! Sorry I've been gone so long.
@daalhoffarm Thankya!
Is that a Pyro meter at the lower left had side at 1:38 by the step we had one on our 4320
What is the differance between a 4520 and the 4620?
@Farmboy112996 Thankya!
Whats this one rated at for top speed? One we got out at work has been clocked in at 31.5 mph by the local police department.
@myfordescort According to the speedometer in dad's truck, 20MPH @ 2500RPM
In great condition, what is the horsepower on this one?
is the 4320 in the same size range? im learning about the New Generation of Power tractors now, so bear with me. i know a fair amount about the current ones.
@zapwatt Ha ha ha. thankya!
what did that engine come out of being a rear vertical mounted injection pump, original was mounted on timing cover on 45 and 4620s
This is the original engine to this tractor. They changed the location of the injection pump, crankcase breather, and air filter arrangement for the 1970 model year. This tractor is a fairly early '69 model year.
+RustyCarnahan ohhhh okay
Does that have the factory turbo or is it a different turbo? +RustyCarnahan
The same on she left the factory with in 1969.
But now sports a 3LM Schwitzer.
Did you notch out 7th for the reverse gear?
Nope. There's just enough slop in the quadrant that it'll spread apart just enough to slip it past.
Travis Kaeb what do you mean? Guess iv never heard anything about that
Brad Ducharme their talking about 3rd reverse
@OkieDoke18 Sounds good, don't it?
@brian93ist Maybe in general, but this one has almost 7300 trouble-free hours on it.
Wheee!
What kinda turbo?
At this point it still had the factory T04 AiResearch on it. Now it has a 3LM Schwitzer. Check out my recent videos to hear how it sounds now.
Is this all the original 4520 engine and intake?
In this video, it is. Take a look at my more recent videos. We had to change injection pumps, and we put a 3LM Schwitzer on it while we were at it
@@RustyCarnahan ok thanks. Looking at a 4520 but a little hesitant on everything ive heard negative about their engines.
@@actZR900 Don't be. If you can get around 1000RPM only on the PTO, and can remember to check your air filters at the start of each season, you'll love it. This engine has somewhere around 8000 hours on it and hasn't been into any deeper than valve adjustments as far as we can tell. Previous owner always ran high quality oil and JD filters and so do we.
@@RustyCarnahan this will be show and light pulling at those shows.
Do you still have that tractor
Yep!
can you do more videos on this tractor
PA FARMER I have a newer video up of the first fire up with a new turbo and injection pump. It's almost a year old at this point.
the 4520 is like a 4430 both have a turbo on the 4020 engine these had lots of problems
2:36 :)))))
I perfer a power shift transmission. 👨🌾
We've got a 4020 Power Shift, and a 3020 Utility Power Shift. Absolutely love them.
I've been on the hunt for a '72 4620 Power Shift for years. Then we'd have a first-year Synchro, and an "updated" last year Power Shift of the first iteration of Deere's "Turbo-Built" tractors.
Why was the 4320 never any with power shift??
