    Love the timelapse video. That brings back a lot if memories. The square cab. We had the old bi-cool a/c with water and a rotating filter on top of the cab. When you would hit a bump or go off camber, it would soak you with water. Lol. But, it was worth it in the Georgia August heat.

    You guys need an exhaust collection system. Dealerships in northern Iowa had them 50 years ago so they didn’t have to open doors when it was cold. I remember a dyno test on dads 444 MH in the shop for seems like a hour. No smoke in the shop.

      I hear you...It was sad to see it go too, I learned to drive combine at 9 years old in that girl. It was in good shape for it's age and at 3,400 hrs it could have ran more. But It was worth more to us in the engine than a combine. The tractor is a beast now and runs a grain vac like no other.

    • @oldad6207

    • @oldad6207
      @oldad6207 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @Ethan Brooks No, but that we had a motor from our combine (worn out) that we salvaged, rebuilt and used as a spare in the 8N. As soon as the 8N started getting weak, we'd start rebuilding the other. Worked nice.

    • @xade7863

    Not a farmer but I like watchin tractors in the field around my house. Is the engine out of the combine much bigger than the engine out of the combine? I would think it would have to be considering the size difference between the two machines.

    • @WelkerFarms
      @WelkerFarms  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      It is surprisingly the same block. Main difference is the age of each, the combine was several years newer and so it had an upgraded fuel delivery system which is a lot more reliable and more hp. It's amazing how many machines john deere put that engine in.

    • @WelkerFarms

      +MRJOHNDEERE3720. :) Sure did. The 7700 had a newer turbo and fuel injection setup so the tractor gained a modest 30-40 hp. We did have to fabricate a new intake as the intake manifold and exhaust manifolds were different on this engine. Other than that just a few tweaks here and there, we've probably got 40 hours since the swap and its running strong.

    looks good. going to need to do that to my 4520 soon it's got over 14000 hrs on it. that air filter rig looks pretty strong got any more videos/info on it?

    • @WelkerFarms
      @WelkerFarms  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      14,000 hours is a good life on that engine! I don't have any more videos besides what was seen in that video. The reason we didn't use the original air cleaner is the engine from the 7700 combine had a different exhaust manifold and turbo design than the 4520. We found it easier to reroute the intake to an air cleaner taken from the combine and put it between the passenger rear wheel and frame and then run a snorkel above the cab. Only problem is we run a grain vac and I think that intake sucks up a lot of the dust our vac is putting out haha.

    R.i.p 7700 John Deere combine how long have you guys had the 7700 turbo? Anyway glad to see that the 4520 is running again you should call is old rloller because it looked as if it was rolling coal in the shop it is understanding that you would make a engine transplant we had to do it with our kenworth a few years ago ah well glad to see that the 4520 is running again great time lapse as always

  • @larrylawson5172
    @larrylawson5172 6 ปีที่แล้ว

    The 4520 was so underpowered for the strength of the front end and the rear end. I once saw a 4520 with a 4840 engine. It had a bit of a bump in the hood but that was a much better match for the front and rear ends of the tractor. It could really make silage!! The other major advantage was you got away from the wretched Roosa-Master CDC distributor injection (although most farmers converted them to the DB pump) and now had a P Series Bosch inline injection pump. It also had an intercooler.

    • @charlesfuglie2491
      @charlesfuglie2491 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      the 4840 had a 466 engine also instead of the 404.

    Are you guys planning on restoring eny of the old tractor that you have sitting around?

  • @thegreenerthemeaner
    @thegreenerthemeaner 8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    The motor you guys put in that tractor is what Deere should have done in the first place. Horrible fire prone air filtration system and a troublesome injection pump, other than that the 4520s were well built. The 4620s corrected those issues plus was the first farm tractor to be equipped from the factory with an intercooler and were very reliable sharing the same motor appearing in the early 7020s. In the days of your combine motor, emissions was an aneroid valve on the injection pump. Tier 4 was how high the big bales were, not the mandatory engine killing emissions standards.

    • @WelkerFarms
      @WelkerFarms  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      That's really informative thanks for sharing! It seems to be a great running engine and the power difference between the two is very noticeable.

    • @thegreenerthemeaner
      @thegreenerthemeaner 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Nick Welker Mostly due to an inline injection pump on the combine engine. The old original engine used a distributor type that was pretty marginal. They used 3 different pumps on the 4520, the last one being the best one of the 3 but still very unstable. Deere replaced a lot of engines in those tractors because the air filters would catch fire sending ash into the engine plus tons of dirt in a day's time. I like you air filter system you engineered. The 4620s had a door at the rear of the hood to access the air filter. The 6030s stuck thru the hood. Always wanted to see if a 6030 air filter would fit my 4620. I would love to have a late 6030. Is this tractor PS or Syncro?

    the 4520 one of john deeres 50-50 tractors
    half of them were great
    the other have got new motors at 4000 hours

    • @WelkerFarms
      @WelkerFarms  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      We only have one and so our experience is the 4000 hour new motor! But part of that was our fault with messing with the diesel pump, which leaked into the crank case causing bearing damage. This new/used engine is running great though.

      +I_bin_da_Alex __ Being a combine engine it is designed to run at max rpm so it has most of its power in the higher rpms and compared to the old engine it is a lot more powerful! We use it for our grain vac.

    That’s awsome .. sounds amazing .. love how you guys repurpose things on the farm .. not only savings in purchasing newer tractor but accomplishing a project together as father an sons .. creating memories forever !! Curious of the horsepower tractor originally had an what it has now ? An combine motor was turbo which the tractor motor probably wasn’t lm guessing ? Really great idea an excellent job well done !!👍

    Great video! I just replaced my first engine this winter with success 👍. I was wondering where you farm at? Your fields are huge! Our 50 foot cultivator would look tiny in your fields! Haha, once again great video. I love all of them, keep it up!

      +Isaac Albert nice work! It's fun replacing an engine, lot of work but fun when done. We farm just outside of Shelby montana. The drone makes them look bigger than they are but to some areas I imagine they are pretty big. Average field is probably 100-150 acres. We only run a 57ft cultivator so not much bigger than yours! Thanks for watching:)

      +yayaya1193able I bet it is, if it is the 404 block. John Deere used that block in many different models of their machines. Some just had different turbos and injection pumps for more hp.

      Same as 4430, 4440 has 466 engine if I'm not mistaken. Sounds just like a 4430 when starting up.

  • @aldenpenney1

    I have considered doing the same with my 1969 4520 (Roosa Master "C" rotary injection pump) and my 1977 7700 turbo combine (3500 hrs.). I was told, however, that the injection pump on the combine is governed only at 2200 rpm and has no power when throttled at lower speeds. I was told that I would have to put a in-line Bosch tractor injection pump on the unit. Did you change yours?

    • @WelkerFarms
      @WelkerFarms  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Awesome! Ours was a Roosa Master C too. We had it rebuilt and ever since it would leak fuel into the crank case, had it looked at multiple times and every time they said it was fuel shouldn't be leaking. Engine ended up leaning out with diesel to the point of failure. I believe we used the same 1977 7700 turbo titan 2 for our repower. It red-lines around 2300-2400 rpm. Though our 7700 did have a Bosch inline injection pump so perhaps it is newer than 1977. Maybe 1979? I should know but can't remember at the moment. This combine engine runs circles around the old 404 that we replaced. It has loads of power in high rpms and seems to have good torque in the lower rpms as well. We have only used this tractor to run a grain vac and plow our wind break with a 12 ft plow. It is nice driving down the road the extra rpm makes the tractor top out around 20-23 mph. The combine had over 4000 hrs and so the engine was well used but it starts well and quits smoking once at operating temperature. The biggest issue we ran into with this repower was the exhaust and intake. The combine engine's exhaust and intake manifold are designed totally different than the 4520 and the turbo is in a different location. Rather than trying to swap turbos and manifolds we just re-routed the intake to the air filter(taken from the 7700) which is now between the passenger driver wheel and frame and then ran a snorkel above the cab. It is easier to change now than the stock air cleaner and you have one less thing poking out of the hood. I'd have to check but I think we also had to slightly modify the shaft coming off the water pump so it could fit the fan as the combine doesn't run the fan from that location, but I could be wrong and would have to confirm this. The Bosch pump also uses a mechanical shut off so I just grabbed a lawn mower throttle cable and ran it into the cab so you can turn off the engine there. Let me know if you have any more questions, it turned out well for us but there were some "fabricating moments".
