Mom taught me to cook white beans at 8 years old, then boiled eggs, cornbread, bacon, sausage, and finally frying pork chops and chicken. This progression was from 8-12 years old then she had me pick a cake recipe out of the pioneers cook book. I chose angel cake and she explained the directions as I went along but had me do it all, it turned out really well. All this to say, my dad required a meat, potato and bread at every meal. Cornbread was on the table every night and biscuits for supper. Canned biscuits were not allowed. In the summer I loved having fresh radishes, onions and tomatoes added to our meals. Growing up on a farm and the hard work it took, as a kid I thought I couldn't wait to get off the farm. As a young adult, I missed the fresh vegetables and convenience of having the grocery store in the back yard.

My husband spent a lot of time in the hospital the last few years he was alive. Anywhere from 6-7 stays every year...in hospital. Our preacher who married us in 1986 said at his funeral that he would have to time his parting prayers for the commercial breaks during Gunsmoke. It was my David's favorite western.
Funny, it was my Daddy's favorite too. He used to tell people he had to watch Gunsmoke on his wedding night before he would go to bed!
My husband watched westerns every day up at the barn office. He had his leg amputated years ago and passed away June 2021. He was a logger like his daddy.

I just started working at an orchard a few months ago and they always had green tomatoes to sell. One day I was talking to a customer and she was telling me how much she loved our green tomato batter mix. She said that they had been cutting the tomatoes in cubes and fried them that way and the tomatoes fried up so much evenly and how delicious they were. Mom-mom would take new potatoes, walnut size and smaller, scrap the skin off with a paring knife and fry them in an iron skillet, on about medium heat. She would, every so often, move them around in the skillet so they developed a brown crispness all around. She called them fried whole potatoes. Definitely a top-five dish from her culinary repertory.

Really enjoyed the crickets chirping softly in the trees and grass while you and Matt talked today. Seems like the closer we get to cooler nights or cold weather the softer they chirp, as if they know what is coming. Maybe they are chirping in every show but today was especially plain. In the summertime the locusts in the trees are especially standouts. And then most every outdoor show I watch the calls of the crows can be heard , but not today. Hope the both of you get to feeling better soon. This beautiful time of year is too pretty to be feeling down.

Two things in this video got me to a thinking. The first thing was talking about using a tarp to harvest your potatoes. If you're growing potatoes in grow bags and you have a wheelbarrow you could make a square frame out of scrap lumber and attach chicken wire or something similar to the bottom of it and set it across the wheelbarrow and pour everything in the grow bag in it and the dirt would fall through to the wheelbarrow and leave the potatoes on top and then you would just have to move the dirt from the wheelbarrow back to the grow bags. The other thing was when you mentioned having cornbread a lot and that got me to a thinking of my grandma that lived in Jackson county because every time we went to her house she ALWAYS had a cake of cornbread made to go with supper.

"Pushing through", that is what I'm going to try to do tomorrow. For the last three and a half weeks I have been down. I went with my sister-in-law to a new little pizza place up in Del Rio and after I got home I was so sick at my stomach. Absolutely miserable. And several days before that I had told my sister-in-law that she needed to look at a place on my back cuz it was really bothering me. Well we both forgot it. That was on Friday. So by the next Tuesday the place on my back was burning hurting itching I was miserable. Come to find out I had shingles. And I honestly believe that is one of the worst pains I've ever been through in my life. They seem to be drying up right now or at least I certainly hope so.
As for eating cornbread every meal, I'm sitting here now watching you guys with a bowl full of soup beans and fried cornbread and hot Chow Chow and a big glass of water. Liked seeing all the potatoes you dug up that's great. I tried to grow some potatoes im grow bags this year, I didn't get a handful. I don't know what I did. I did it just like my mama had showed me. Of course she had them in the ground she didn't have grow bags there was no such thing. I didn't have a lot of tomatoes like I usually do. Anyway I enjoy watching you guys from Spring to harvest and even with your fall Garden. Thank you for everything you do to share your life with all of us. It makes my life better

In Michigan we use old tractor tires stacked up to plant our potatoes in. It works great.

I'm always running outside picking all my tomatoes during the first snow. I want the tomatoes to stay on the vine till the last possible moment...here in Montana it can snow anytime, usually end of September.
Sending healing thoughts your way 😊

Hi Tipper, I love radishes too. I can sit with a handful and a bit of salt and crunch away. The red ones are usually "French Breakfast but this year I found one of the seed companies were doing mixed variety. There were red long ones, round purple ones and white all with a slightly different flavour. I have strawberries too which I now grow on a raised bed but for a few years I grew them like some of the professional growers. I had a couple of lengths of rain guttering up on some trestles. Drilled drainage holes down the bottoms and off I went. It worked well for me as I have a big slug problem like Corey. The fruits hung over the edge so got plenty of air round them and just needed a feed when watering. I don't like chemicals so I use seaweed plant food and I use blood, fish and bone . When you were talking about Japanese beetle reminded me of when I used to grow lilies and we had lily beetle. At the time I used to have my grandaughter from school and her two friends from next door so I used to pay by the dead beetle and it kept them occupied for half an hour.

Totally agree about the nap thing, so hard to do when young and so easy to do when older, unbelievable difference! I just could not stand having to take a nap when a child, made no sense to me! We're going to go from 84 one day to 60 the next this week up north.

Afternoon nap? Haha! Since my retirement in 2018, I have taken a serious nap every day. Checked with my sister and she does as well. We are serious about our naps. We take our contacts out and we put our pajamas on!!!! LOL Love a good hard nap! Makes the rest of the day go so much better.... 😀

I knew an old man years ago who would pull his tomato plants up right before the first frost and hang them upside down in his unheated basement. They would slowly ripen through the fall.

It’s funny you mentioned the bees, it was 43 degrees here in Maine yesterday morning and I found bees sleeping inside pumpkin blossoms for cover and warmth! 😊

Honeoye strawberries are an absolute favorite of ours. They are prolific, and self polinating in zones 3 through 8, have exceptional flavor, are great for eating fresh, freezing, and for jams, and jellies. This one is hard to beat.

Sorry that y’all have been sick, praying y’all are better soon. 😇🙏🏻 That’s a nice harvest of beans y’all got there. Way to push through to get the job done. I’m with Matt on not spending most of our time INSIDE, being outside in nature along with some good ole sunshine ☀️ is the best medicine and therapy there is. Bacon, Coffee & a Hammock up the creek on the mountain sounds like the place to be for me. Oh and don’t forget the bow in case the bear shows up. 😊👍🏻 ❤🙏🏻

You two have inspired me to have a small garden next year. Although I'll be 72 tomorrow I still want to try it. I had and still have tomato plants but wish I had more veggies. Hope you guys get to feeling better.

Hope y'all feel well very soon. Don't overdo. Cornbread with each meal is delicious. My in laws always had a pan of cornread made and covered over for the next snack or meal. Cornbread with beans and potatoes sound delicious! Bless Matt with the flu! Scary! I had it one time badly. My thing when someone was sick was to always have water or juice by them. I was so sick that my mind knew to drink but I couldn't figure how to pick up the glass. Stay well this fall and winter. 🧡🧡

Sorry you have been puny. Summer colds seem the worst. Daddy used to make us kids a hot toddy when we were sick. Of course mama had Black Draught, and 3 S Tonic. She would also put Vick's Vapor Rub on us and inside our nose! Gosh that was worse than being sick! lol lol Praying you two get better. One of the ladies in church would make what she called garden scramble. When the garden started playing out she'd mix okra, onions, squash, green tomatoes cut up together and rolled in cornmeal and flour and fried. Gosh it was good, of course she had cornbread with it. We eat a bit of cornbread ourself. We love cornbread and milk in the evening when you get just a bit hungry. When I can I like to take a corner piece hot out of the oven with real butter and honey. Mama didn't let me do that when I was little- you'll spoil your supper- but now I can do it 😉 So glad your garden is holding up, your experiment really did well. You'll be able to plan ahead so you can do it again next year. I been chittering like that Squirrel y'all were talking about, lol I caught that Matt 😁 Enjoyed the visit. Stay safe and GOD bless

I admire that sluggish bumble bee on your flowers...Much like you and Matt, he is tired, and ready for a nap, but he knows he needs to push through to keep his family fed throughout the winter months. People underestimate the importance of bees. Here in Germany, beekeepers actually rent out their hives to farmers during the spring months to ensure their crops are properly pollinated. They haul the bee hives into farmers fields, set them up for a few months, and let them do their work. The beekeeper gets a small fee from the farmer, and he gets to keep the honey (which he can sell) while the farmer is guaranteed good pollination of his crops. I think that's so smart!

When we were kids, if we went out to play in cooler weather, mama would tell us to put on a sweater or we'd end up with "you-gag-dye-flippsy of the glow hole"! 😂 I never questioned any part of that even when she'd say that to me when I was older! Lol! I've said that to my son & grandson and you talk about getting funny looks & questions??!! I just told them I didn't know, it was something my mama said! I think I may be going thru that now...been feeling a little puny myself. I don't get outside much at all, wish I was able to. Hope y'all feel better soon! Hugs and blessings from VA! 🦋🌻
