- We've been enjoying the first airish weather of the year here in the mountains of Appalachia. Our late tomatoes are suffering from it, but it still feels so good. Matt's started the yearly chore of busting firewood for our winter heat.

Fall and airish weather, the changes, it all signals the cozziness of home. It was always my favorite time of year to visit my grandparents in southeastern Kentucky. Snuggly warm in their old farmhouse, sitting around the coal stove at night and then crawling into bed. Sleeping on feather beds and pillows, and under all handmade quilts. Its memories and a dream now. The ultimate peace existed in that place. I miss them and those times more than words could ever express.
It makes me feel like that too 😀
I have those same memories, big ol' feather bed and how big and round my eyes were when they explained to me what those large ceramic pots under the bed were used for. hahaha But those days were beautifully simple. The only trouble that came up were from each individual creating that trouble for themselves.
Watching this video made me think about people who may think living like the pioneers sounds so romantic don't realize how hard the pioneers really had to work! Watching Matt cut the wood with the ax...whew!!!😊

I enjoy watching your channel. It takes me back to childhood visiting my grandma’s sister. She had a farm, and there was always something to do. From getting food out of the garden to feeding the cows, and the pigs and chickens. Plus she had grapes and an apple orchard. I had the time of my life there. It’s all gone now. Every one has past, and the property was sold. Now there are townhomes 😢

I’m with Matt, 30 in the morning and 50 all day would be great to work in. I worked outdoors year round building homes and remodeling and the hot weather wasn’t a lot of fun. I enjoy your popsicle conversations. All the best from Cape Cod!

A few years back, we started going out to the Hidden Valley Wildlife Management Area here in VA to do what us suburban folk call primitive camping. After that first weekend there, we were overwhelmed by how relaxed we felt. It truly was an emotional, mental, and spiritual tune-up. Now, getting away from this area and camping out in the deep woods has become a necessity.
So glad I found this channel! It’s my way of visiting the mountains again. God bless your beautiful family

I want to tell u how much I appreciate & love ur Sunday music. My Episcopal church tries to offer a wide range of music so I’ve suggested the organist the organist to find a time to listen to the Sunday program. U know I grew up in the country in WV & I heard all these songs but not for about 65 years but the minute I heard Ur Dad &Paul sing “On the Jericho Road” today I was transported back to that church that my Mom & I went to every single Sunday until I graduated from High School & left the area. Thank u so much.

Even though I'm a "flatlander', my memories & life in rural America are so similar in so many ways - love that you cherish & preserve this essential way of life as I do!

We used to pick all our green tomatoes and place them on cardboard in our basement and they would ripen slowly all fall. Once we wrapped them in newspaper but found that was not really necessary. We would sometimes have ripe tomatoes until Christmas. Our basement was not heated but maintained a reasonable temperature year round.

I was thinking that Matt would get his fried green tomatoes. He deserves them after splitting all that wood! I'm really glad you're both feeling better! Listening to Matt talk about eating the squirrels made me think of my father. When I was little, we lived in the woods, and my father hunted and fished all the time. He loved squirrel and rabbit. My mother always made stew out of them.
God how I love these beautiful, normal people living in the great Appalachia. Love to hear the word the air is airish. I hope heaven has Mts.
I'd never had squirrel until I married my husband. He'd grown up in the woods hunting and fishing. He's taught me a lot too. One of our favorite meals is It Moved Soup. Whatever he'd bring home would go in the soup pot with a bunch of veggies and we'd have a wonderful supper.

I'm a little south of you, Tipper, but the cool weather even made as far south as Birmingham. It's been so nice at night - you can take a deep breath! the humidity has dropped and it feels so nice. Our air conditioner went out on us last week during that last heat wave and we're still waiting for repairs. So this cool weather is very welcome at our house! Reminds me of when I was a kid and we didn't have air conditioning. Fans blowing in every room and windows open and front & back doors open all day and night! I feel like I'm camping out! Good to see y'all - feel like we just had a good visit with you and Matt. God bless.
I like it when you can sit outside with good friends and family and just be near together. and in between talking just listening to the quite as mother natures sighs over us. Two jobs ago, the place had a homebrewed log splitter made from the hydraulics from a small bulldozer and powered by an ancient Continental engine....you could bust big logs with it
An electrician's knife has a dull blade.. it's for taking insulation off without damaging the wire, especially stranded.
I can do without Summer....hot to me, is 75°.... that's a maximum.
Fall and early Spring are my favorite times of the year.
My grandparents heated with wood and coal....start on wood, then use coal. For coal, the stove has to be firebrick lined.

I love the end of summer August into all of September. The greenery is old green and the sky is a brighter blue ,the air has a gold tint. Even where I live in west Texas. We hardly have a true fall. End of hot summer beginning hot fall, yet the air has that golden glow for the beginning of fall. I grew up in northwest Arkansas and late summer and all fall was my favorite time of the year. The first wood smoke smell from a wood burning stove or fireplace and finally the night flight of geese. Most time they would fly in day, but once in awhile we would hear them at night. Mom would think they were lost and fret over them. Ahh, the memories. Love your life .Thank you for sharing. Oh, my grandfather split wood for yrs. Axe and block.
I love the companionship of people who have been together for a long time..
My favorite season living in the mountains is the winter. I like the colo and snow. I grew up in the Smokey Mountains in Maggie Valley N.C. back in the 50s and 60s. So many things to do and the mountains sort of talk to you. So peaceful and soothing. In the summer we would dam up the creek and make us a swimming hole. Fishing in the crick, looking for Jack in the pulpit and ramps. Pealing big sheets of mice, looking under rocks at the reservoir for shinks, skimming rocks on Johnathan creek and many many more things. I sure miss those days. Such a awesome part of my life. If I could live my life over again I would have never moved away from there. I really love your videos. I makes me think of all the great times of growing up in the Smokies.

When the air is clearer the sun feels hotter if you're right in it. That's also why the shade feels cooler. It's that lower humidity that makes the difference.
Watching Matt splitting wood brings back good memories of when I was much younger. Early eighties my dad and I would help our Yugoslavian neighbor with his firewood, (his mom would visit and only cooked over a fire). We hand split an 8’ wall around his backyard which was a half acre. I was 11 years old and had a blast. Buba burned through it in a few months. Thanks for your videos.
I sure enjoyed this video today! Ive been a follower of your blog since the girls were little and you built them a "fort" on granny's porch because it was raining! My folks grew up in north Arkansas and I feel so comfortable when I watch your videos. Matt makes me think of my youngest son, they raised his rent just as his room mate left so he took his tent and went camping on a buddy's land for 6 months. He'd send me pictures of his supper over the fire.He still went to work every day. I was proud he could do that. Keep the videos coming and God bless!!

Chit chattin over popsicles is a real nice thing to do. We all grew up fishing, shooting squirrels, rabbits, turkey, pheasant, prairie chickens, duck and of course deer. We were poor but so was everyone else. There were 9 of us boy cousins with 3 uncles that did outdoor stuff together, It was just what we did as an extended family and we loved it. Wouldn't change a thing - best at childhood ever. You all still live that way and I wish I had never left it. You have been blessed. Who else loves where they live, so much, that they wouldn't trade it for the world. The best things in life can't be bought, no matter how rich you are and much of what you can buy isn't worth much of anything at all. The best to you and yours.

Here is a great idea I will share with you! We use it all the time! So when you buy your seed packs, and then arrive. You lay them all out on your table, take a picture of each pack! Print them out, and laminate them. Then use the large size tongue depressor sticks, if you can find at the garden, tractor supply store garden sign sticks, spikes. We used old tent stacks we found at the local consignment shop. What ya do is clip the seed packs to their sticks and enjoy planting. Hope this works out.

My grandparents never owned an air conditioner as long as Pop-pop, who passed in 1986, was alive. Through the hot summer nights, they slept the best they could with the windows open, but screened to keep the insects out. When the weather turned, as it now has, Pop-pop would say it was good sleeping weather. In cold weather, they slept under layers of blankets and comforters as the upstairs bedrooms were unheated. In the parts of the house that were heated , they used kerosene space heaters. In those days, kerosene was called coal oil.
If you can find the breech trees in your area their bark is amazing for making fire start bundles!
Any type of trees where the bark peels off as paper works best!
Matt, if you have wood planners, or routers at work the shavings from them are awesome to create wood starter bundles. With a steel survival spark stick. On the spine side of your knife their is a way to mill it so you have a working edge to strike your fire starter stick with! So you don’t dull your knife edge.
I so look forward to the popsicle break💖💖💖..now that it's cooln off I can haul wood from the woods to cut up for firewood..planting more string beans,carrots,onions & sweet potatoes slips..dehydrated hot peppers & cylantro...can't wait for some rain..we have had none this week..used all water in the rain barrels..we have to make sure stuff has plenty of mulch to make it through the dry spells.. everyone be safe & blessed🙏🙏🙏✝️✝️✝️
When Matt talked about eating squirrel and dropping some dumplings in it and that that was mighty fine eating., he ain’t wrong. Squirrel soup and dumplings yes sir! Held many squirrel to get skinned and rabbit. Sounds like home to me.

I do so agree about being outside. I miss the days that I could take my boys and go camping. I'm sure I told you before but I spent the most wonderful vacation I've ever had for 3 weeks under a homemade tent at Pine Creek up near the Appalachian trail. It was wonderful just to be with my boys that long. And I too love food cooked outside. And if you just take a sandwich and go to the woods it just seems to taste so much better.. it too has been very cool here a couple of mornings, got down to 42. We just now finally got a really good rain. And now it's really cool outside. I live on the North Side of the Mountain also so by now there's no sunshine hitting the house until late late afternoon and then just for about an hour. But it's to be expected. It is the fall of the year and we're headed toward winter. But we've got that beautiful season of the beautiful foliage that comes around in October. And the power goes out on my Mountain a lot. But I have several lamps and I have two fireplaces one in each end of the house so my son Cuts wood for me so we will be okay. Really did enjoy the video from Saturday I just love watching you and Matt talk to each other. Hold on tight it's so precious. I miss my husband so very much. And I'm sure your mom misses your dad. My mom and dad were married 72 years and I know when my mother died my dad was just lost. But anyway thank you for sharing your life with us.. The do it the old school way! All you need is para cord, your knife, a leather man, and a branch of wood to make a spin bow, and make a drill stick, and a fire block.
You sent up your soon bow have your spar nest ready. Breech shaving, branch shavings so when you spin up a friction Amber you can transfer it to your shavings nest. It takes practice.
I have thoroughly enjoyed this…so peaceful with the insects in the background and your casual conversation with each other and us. Thank you for all of your hard work as you continue to celebrate Appalachia.
I just LOVE these videos where you and Matt work around the house, or just hang out & chat together. I’m sorry so much of your fall garden didn’t come up. My tomatoes played out a couple of weeks ago. I’m still getting okra & peppers. I only planted collards & mixed greens in my fall garden & so far, they are doing great! I’m so thrilled it’s fall! I am loving these cooker temperatures & lower humidity! Praise the Lord!

So comforting to hear your stories of past times and Appalachian history...My Grandparents had a sustainable homestead and I spent a lot of my time there as we lived a 1/4 mile up the road...We all learned valuable life skills spending time there...I just took 2 loaves of homemade bread out of the oven and finished making 4 dozen chocolate chip cookies before that...I've been making bread since I was 12...I live in the city now and I do miss sitting out on the porch in the evenings listening to the summer sounds without car noise and I miss hearing roosters crowing and clucking chickens...I hang onto my memories to get through these crazy times...I could not eat a squirrel...They are just too cute...My Grandparents talked about eating Pigeon for Christmas dinner during the war...hard times were had then...that year my Grandparents made their children's toys as well.

I enjoyed every second of this video. It was so peaceful.
Love geetin’ wood as a family. We heat our home all winter on the dead trees we harvest. We go out for the day and load up our ‘76. Hot, tiring but oh so satisfying. We pray every time we return - to express our gratitude for the provisions the forests provide. We bond and work together- & spend weekends splitting wood with mauls & stacking. Matt is onto something with how much it taxes the body to do it, but it’s a healthy work out for sure. We don’t go to gyms or run on treadmills, but a good wood haul is worth it’s weight in physical fitness. We are so grateful to God for the ready resources we partake of. The fall comes and slides through our best defenses , when we feel it we have to react and cover the bases . We know what is sensitive and what can endure. I like you all . I live in southeast Tennessee and i have to watch the flowers that tell me what is happening and i go from there to . Animals have another sense of the weather , the humming birds are already leaving , my cherokee grandmother talt me the the signs. they sense when it's coming before we even know. I follow her lead ! I am so jealous!! We are still in the 90's. We use to say Grandma would walk around with her mouth wide open taking in the first cool front! I think I do the same! I'm watching that hurricane that might be heading your direction later next week. It might put off my trip plans, which makes me so disappointed. Just have to wait and see. I'm like Matt, the first time I feel a cool front go thru I am ready to cut wood. Passing down Matt's knowledge to Katy is priceless. I am so thankful my dad did the same with me. Breakfast in the woods is so much better! So is coffee. I agree Tipper, a Winter time of year 70 degrees is cooler than a 70's Summer degrees. HA Well at least it feels that way!

This is added to my favorite popsicle talks in the garden. There have been several that really struck a fond note with me. Your crickets are chirping in the background again and I can tell autumn is near. Really enjoy Matt talking about/showing his knives. Did he say that is a Mora Black Garberg ? His splitting wood , especially with a splitting maul by hand brings fond memories too. For years I cut and split my own mesquite and blackjack oak and stacked it for winter. Each one has a very distinctive and sweet aroma when split and burned also. Makes the house smell so fine as does the woodpile. The blackjack oaks have changed color here maybe a little earlier than normal for central Texas. The monarch butterflies have started drifting through on their migration South as of yesterday , a sure sign of coming autumn. Really enjoyed today's show. I was getting ready to pull up the beets, radish,turnips and carrots
I'd planted all in my stock watering container. None grew except for greens!!! But I found my carrots were growing!! Harvested one four inches!!! Did my happy dance!! Also found a few turnips!!! Yeah. Harvested my third cabbage and my first of six celery. Have flowers on all my eggplants. Peppers galore! Both green and yellow banana

My grandparents, my Dad and one of my uncles used to hunt them so they were part of our diet. I wouldn't eat them now but I never thought anything about it when I was a kid.
And the popsicle! A signr that all is right with the world!
