I visited Sintra yesterday and no, you can not access the balconies and outside area of Pena with a park ticket only! You can only stroll through the gardens and wont come close to the palace and there is no park and balconies ticket! I was told by a guard that one can upgrade to a full ticket in the souvenir shop. So don't be fooled. It is super crowded, even late in the afternoon. I took a ride with a tuk tuk from Sintra to avoid a steep uphill slosh. It was cheaper than the bus and very entertaining. Downhill one can walk back to Sintra in about 30 minutes over a hiking trail starting at the lower end of the gardens opposite the lakes, (steep steps though).
When visiting Pena Palace booked a tour to avoid lines. We took a tour by INSIDE LISBON from Avenida de Liberdade at Hard Rock Cafe meeting point. Its worth it! Will be going back next year 😊
We visited Sintra and found time to do the Pena Palace and the Moorish Castle in one day alone. Accomplished because you can walk over to the Moorish Castle from the Pena Palace, after also enjoying the beautiful gardens below the Pena Palace. By no stretch of the imagination would anybody spend 5 hours at the Pena. Day 2 we took in the National Palace in a couple of hours inside and out. Would prefer to have spent that time at Quinta de Regaleira to be honest. But luckily I live in Belém and can return any time.
I have a private car and wanted to go to the top just for pictures do i have purchase tickets or fall in line? I have no plans of entering the interior
Thank you for all of your suggestions ! We just returned from Portugal and Spain and we drove all the way up but could not find the castle lol because of the torrential rain and winding roads as we drove up therefore decided to visit on another trip. The town looks lovely and what I saw was magical so I will plan for next time with all your great suggestions in mind 😊
Your tips to Pena Palace are sooo helpful! We go in November. I am now thinking of only seeing the outside so that we have more time to see the other castle and enjoy the town more.
I have a question, I don’t wanna enter, i just want to be in escalators outside of the palace, be close to the walls, etc, in that case i have to pay for the whole ticket or just park (cheapest one)?
Amanda- your commentary is so well done! It must take a long time to gather all of the details and script your narration! Your insights shared would be most helpful to anyone planning to travel to this region. Where to next??
Thank you for sharing your experience about Pena Palace. Will definitely check out only the exterior of the palace which will save us time to checkout the other places!
@@maritesgabaldon3026 hello, no tickets needed for the exterior but I would say to skip it because it is too crowded to enjoy. It’s hard to even walk around. The heat is also unbearable with alot of walking.
Wow...thank you for the great tips...very thorough. I was looking for the information regarding the Pena palace ticket. I know the kids will likely to get bored touring inside the palace.
Early May, and it was probably the most ideal time. The flowers were all in full bloom, it hadn't dried out yet, it wasn't as busy as it can be and the heat wasn't bad yet. Thanks for watching!!!
Great content! Question: but don’t you have to pay to see the interior to get access to some areas? Or can you see all of the exterior areas including the roofs, etc without having to go into the interior of the palace? I figure, if you’ve seen the interior of one castle, you’ve pretty much seen them all 🤣
Thank you! Going in Dec on a day trip mostly for Regaleria and now I know I will go back for a few days. Where did you stay - a store or anything you can remember so I can see what area I should stay?
So glad you found it helpful! We stayed at an Airbnb (LUXa Charm house) right at the bottom of the road that heads to the Regaleria. It was a great location. Not easy to park though! We got lucky, so keep that in mind if you plan to drive there. And yes! Go back for a few days! We couldn't believe how much there was to see in such a small area.
your tips for sintra are very useful.i am planning to visit it in march so I just wanted to know ,do we need to buy tickets to see pena palace from outside as well or its required only if we go inside?
This looks amazing! Wow!! I'm going with husband and our twins. Can I ask about the penna palace is tickets to go into the grounds as in gardens. I'm not that big on seeing the castle inside the kids will moan lol, but I want to see the grounds. Also the quinta rageleria is that the cave too from your pics?
Sorry for the late reply....hopefully not too late! You do need to buy tickets for the grounds, but they are cheaper. And yes, the interior wasn't as exciting as the exterior for our kids. Quinta da Regaleira was great and, yes that was one of the many caves they have there. The caves go all over the place. They are quite long. Our kids got a little freaked out, but I loved it!
Hope this isn't too late! You can find taxis to bring you to the entrance of Pena grounds, but you will want to buy the bus ticket that brings you from the entrance to the palace (otherwise it's about a 15-20 min uphill walk).
I booked tickets for the park of Peña only would I still be able to explore the palace grounds and walk on the terraces and take photos? Or would I only be able to explore the area before the palace entrance?
Sorry for the late reply!! Just saw your comment. You will miss out on a couple terrances by not going inside, but you'll still have tons of places on the outside that you'll be able to see, including some lovely terraces. Hope we got this to you in time! If not, hopefully it helps others looking in the comments for help. :)
You're right. Even an adult without kids, vloggers mentioned going inside is not that spectacular for the hype generated. The outside & gardens are better, and the other Moorish castle is more interesting.
Very nice content! Thank you. Will not visit the palace also. Can you please let me know if you need some approval for the drone shots ? I would love to use my drone there, but don't know if need a permit or apply smwhere. Thanks :)
Drones aren't allowed. We did see people using them, but they could be confiscated. We used stock video footage for our videos along with our own 'on the ground' footage.
No touring the outside is free, but the Tuk Tuk up could cost a few euros if you go that route. In a do over we probably wouldn't have gone inside. Unless we had a 3 or more days in Sintra. :) Have fun!
Am going to Sintra next week. I see there is no ticket for terrace and gardens only. One price of 13.20 euros. Is that correct or am i missing something. I dont want to go inside. If i dont have to go inside then can I reach there whenever I reach there or time bound still?
I am renting a car in Lisbon but if parking is too difficult in Sintra, I can take the train from Lisbon. How far is the train station from downtown Sintra?
If you come by train, the downtown or historical center is about a 10 minutes walk, and if you keep walking straight trough the center you find Quinta da regaleira in more 10 mins , pena palace and moorish castle might be more challenging so prepare and take a transport up there.
You forgot to say that for the price of Pena Palace park entrance you will barely see the walls. So either you buy the whole ticket with admission to the castle, or don't. You owe us for 3 wasted tickets🙄
Hmm does it means i cant take pictures when you get to the top of the outside of the palace? I have no plans of getting inside in falling in line but like louve or versailles in paris you can stay close and take pictures of the outside?
Thanks for wasting our ticket to enter the palace with this "wonderful" video. Completely wrong advice made up from a one time experience. The truth is that they won't let you in unless you pass the time slot ticket control on time in Pena Palace. Be 5 minutes late of your ticket time and you are denied like us and told to buy a new ticket. Your video has been a good lesson for me though. I shouldn't have taken advice from personal travel blogs.

Nice drone footage!!! I wish we had tine to see that part of Portugal 🇵🇹…good info…
Thanks! It is a very nice area, like a colourful Galacia.
Maybe one day!
I have a toddler so thanking for pointing this out.
You're welcome. Have a great time!
You should go up toward the light in the Quinta da Regaleira.

sounds wonderful. Great tips. I think I would like all the outsides and outdoor scenery and activities more than going inside castles.
There is a Camino route that includes Sintra ;)
Yes, we could see that being the case :)
Your tips to Pena Palace are sooo helpful! We go in November. I am now thinking of only seeing the outside so that we have more time to see the other castle and enjoy the town more.
That's awesome. Yes, if your on a time crunch the inside isn't as amazing as the outside and Sintra has much more to offer. :)

That is likely. Our boys weren't interested in the inside, but they loved the outside! So, there's something for both of you :)
Soooo helpful! Thank you so much! 💚
I have a question is the Castle for sale
How are you guys doing? Looking forward to some new videos!
Hey! We're doing well. Travel has changed for our family and so haven't been able to add as much lately. Hopefully we can get back to it soon!

Hey, Is it possible to check out the exteriors of the pena palace without buying a ticket ?
Whats the name of that restaurant that serves sangria on those tall glasses.
Superb area.
So at Pena Palace do you need tickets to view only the exterior?

Sintra is a pretty much a tourist trap. Kind of Disneyland version of Portugal. Save your money and explore Lisbon's real neighbourhoods.
Why not both? :)
you just probably been in wrong places , if you're a traveller you know you got go off the beaten path, here is no exception.
