    Thank you for the video. This is my first "DSLR" camera and I found your video very educational. I was looking for the basics and you nailed them and then you shared advanced setting as well. I think your video moved along nicely, hit the points effectively, and I appreciate you separating the basics from the advanced how you did.

    i know this video isn't too recent, but i just wanted to say a few things. this is probably the most helpful youtube video i've watched in a very long time, and answered all of the questions that i couldn't find the answers to myself. also, do you know of a way to enable a visual "level" graphic as one of the camera's display options? an a6400 guide video showed that, although it's available within that camera's settings, it doesn't appear to be available on this camera specifically.

    • @MaartenHeilbron

    I need help right now in making decision to buy a new camera for my upcoming music video project.
    But I'm limited with my budget so I just have these two option :
    1. Sony a6000 + sel 35mm oss lens/sigma 30mm lens, or

    I have a qustion though. I do have the 6100, however, in the menu setting where I chose the format, I picked XAVC S 4K. So far so good. Then underneath I wanted to pick 30p 100M, but I don't have that option. It only gives me 2 Options that is 25p 100M and 25p 60M. Is there a reason, some other setting why it won't show me the 30p?

    • @MaartenHeilbron
      @MaartenHeilbron  ปีที่แล้ว

      A pleasure to read your kind words, thanks!! Yes, there is a reason. You are in a geographical area where 50Hz alternating current and 25/50 fps video is (or has historically been) the norm. Although it would seem that the transformation of broadcasting from analog to digital system has made these kinds of distinctions unnecessary, Sony has not yet updated their firmware. If you must have 30 frames (which is the North American standard) you can change the camera's settings to NTSC which will make those available.

    Dear Maarten ! I own a5100 and think about upgrading to a6100. 60-70 % is video of my grandkids. Is it worth to upgrade? One of the features of a5100 that I find very valuable and useful is the so-called CLEAR ZOOM feature - which allows to do 2 X optical zoom without practically losing in quality. I can use a good quality prime - like 35 mm 1.8 with OIS and do some limited zooming. I think this feature is unique to Sony. Strange that no one is talking about it in their reviews. Thanks.

      Hmmm. If you are using the settings in the video AVC-HD, 4K 30 frames, highest data rate, shutter 1/60, and your lens's widest aperture with the lowest possible ISO, then you need more light in your scene.

    Sony should have a ”Flat and/or Neutral” creative style as a optional preset without having to dail down one of the optional presets.
    Creative Style ”Portrait” set at -3, -2, -2 gets you more color grading headroom due to higher dynamic range.
    Setting the D-Range Optimizer to Lv5 gave me even more dynamic range. This setting is semi-hidden. I had no clue it was adjustable by moving left or right on the controls.
    Its ambiguous as to why Sony does not have a ”Flat HDR” preset as an option for videographers. The creating style ”Standard” saturates and shapens images. You would assume it's a flatter and more true to life style.
    Something tells me the a6100 can mimic the 6300 or higher by simply playing with Creative Styles settings. Technically, outside of cosmetics and IBIS , the only difference between the a6100 and higher end models are software related.

      Thanks for the kind words. Although I provide more detail here: th-cam.com/video/z1rdjGLmsd8/w-d-xo.html
      In essence, unless your video is being projected in a movie theatre or similar where the display is capable of projecting an actual 24 frames per second, most displays (computers, tv sets, monitors) are based on 30 frames. So if you shoot at 24, the display will create 6 extra frames per second to make up for the missing frames.

    Hi again, Maarten. Your videos are really fantastic. I was wondering if you think the lack of picture profiles with the a6100 is major negative? I use the a6300 with cine4 and it looks like I’d lose that option with this. I wonder if it will make much difference in the property market videos I produce. I also shoot at 100fps in HD which delivers really great results. Can I do that with the a6100?

      While some of the capabilities of picture profiles, including cine4 are not easily substituted, it is possible to use the creative settings to provide very similar results, and make some further adjustments in editing and colour grading (try DaVinci resolve). I just have a minor confusion is the creative custom flat profile that you just suggested as good as the in built sony slog profiles on a6400 and a6600. Can you tell on a scale of 1 to 10 how much resemblance can be achieved.

    • @MaartenHeilbron
      @MaartenHeilbron  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Resemblance to what? If you need the additional dynamic range and don't mind the noise from the higher ISO, then use SLOG, but be aware that the quality, if you make dramatic changes will suffer as in camera you are only getting a 100Mb 8 bit recording. If you can create the look you want in camera - using neutral or flat or whatever, you will have better quality.

      Maarten Thank you ! So can I create a "flat" mode myself to make the color grading easier? I allow myself another question about this camera. I think to buy it next week and I read tests talking about a rather bad rendering in 1080/120. have you tested? this function is important to me. and several tests speak of bad "roller shutter". Is it so bad? do you think they are better with the a6400 ?

    • @MaartenHeilbron
      @MaartenHeilbron  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@johnnyutah2036 The reviewers complaining about 1080 recordings are comparing to 4K quality, which is better. Most feel that down-razzing 4K to HD provides better quality. As for the 1080/120, only you can determine whether the quality is sufficient for your needs, but in my view, if you need that frame rate and intend to slow the footage in editing, it's fine.
      As for rolling shutter, most cameras have less visible rolling shutter effect at HD than 4K, and it's mostly evident when the camera is panning (side to side) quickly. In most cases it's not noticeable.
      I don't want to make excuses, because if you're aware of an issue with a camera and purchase it anyway because of something I said, you will be unhappy. Don't purchase a camera that you don't feel fully meets your needs as you will always be looking for that fault and always be dis-satisfied.

      In fact I just hesitate between the a6100 and the a6400 even if they are close enough in terms of price. I have the impression that the a6100 is sufficient for my use. My only real fear is the lack of a flat image profile. I like the protune mode of the gopro and I wish I had the same functionality on a Sony APS-C.
      I think that by reducing the contrast and the sharpness in the settings, I will have enough amplitude for my color grading. Do you think it will be enough?
      Because the price difference between the a6100 and the a6400 could give me a contribution to quickly buy a 35mm1.8 lens ...
      What do you think ?

What this scene needs is a less distracting background (I understand that may be difficult - I am always rearranging my home shooting locations to accomplish this) and more light - ideally coming from behind the camera.

Could you tell me if I need to set up the microphone in the menu? My second question is about stabilization. I do have a little symbol of a hand shaking with "off" word, so I am guessing that the stabilization is off, which is great if I want to record a video on my tripod.
