Just starting a build on a junkyard 51 Pontiac Eight Streamliner. The engine valves are seized up from sitting probably 50 or 60 years, at least 30years without a carb. Not sure what is going in next, but I will be checking in with your experience with the car regularly for ideas. the master cylinder you used may be needed. Beautiful cars. I have wanted that brake tool as well since I saw it on Roadkill Garage. It looks like it might be almost fun to do brake lines.
what are your plans with it? We are putting a cadillac 472 in our chieftain, which is at the machine shop currently, and might be awhile before we get it back. That brake tool is an absolute requirement in my opinion. the flaring tool that you crank by hand or by a wrench, is really hard to keep centered and I constantly cracked flares or egg'd them out. With the tool im using now, it's rare I screw it up. maybe it's just me and my inexperience, but it's well worth paying a bit more for the professional brake tool.
@@WestMountainClunkers you are kinda using the flare tool incorrectly. A word of advice is to put the side where the line is being flared in the vice. Make sure the tool bottoms out to properly hold the line. When making the flare do it by hand. If you have a problem with splitting on a double flare you are doing 1 or 2 things wrong. First you are trying to flare in too much line for the first step. Two you need lubrication. Only use brake approved lubricants or brake fluid. Also never remove the flare until you are completely done. Re aligning the tubing can cause splitting.
Check the dwell of the points, and the timing -- they sound a little off ... that might help your lack of power at idle. Nice to see old Pontiacs come back to life. Keep up the good work!
Can you do a follow up video on that brake master cylinder and provide model number as I have a 51 Pontiac that I need to replace master cylinder and really like that set up dial remote reservoirs. Thanks
the master cylinder is a Tandem wilwood master www.summitracing.com/parts/wil-260-7563 wilwood proportioning valve www.summitracing.com/parts/wil-260-11179 Hopefully that helps!
The master cylinder is still down below, near the floor. What we did was get a remote reservoir so we can fill the master cylinder from up top and plumbed in a proportioning valve.
Nice! How much did the brake job cost you fellas if you don't mind me askin? Have an eye on a '51 myself upstate. Gonna do somethin real foolish and re-core her radiator, rebuild her straight 8 and tranny. Add on some fresh tires and go 900 miles. Like I said, foolish...but fun.

That car ain't running good enough to be driving it , you need to be able to give it enough gas to use the clutch , if it's dieing that much when you let off the clutch wait till ya got it running good first .

@@WestMountainClunkers It'll take a long while, as all projects do but I'll be the first to let ya know!
That's the way I'd do it also. I guess that makes me a fool as well, but nothing like being original.
Looking at a brake job from the lens of a camera three feet away with poor lighting is like opening your eyes after a paper bag is put over your head.
