    How did you guys get the master cylinder to the top

    • @WestMountainClunkers
      @WestMountainClunkers 2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      The master cylinder is still down below, near the floor. What we did was get a remote reservoir so we can fill the master cylinder from up top and plumbed in a proportioning valve.

    Ignore the Pontiac guy.they are good motors. You need to stake all the oil galley plugs and do something about the rockers. Stock rockers over 4000 rpm is not good. Because the 2 ways to loose oil pressure is you didn't stake the oil plugs or a rocker cam off and a lifter poped out. I have 2 built caddy 500s that have been running for years. Incredible torque and probably the best of all the BOPC blocks. Im a buick guy and like Pontiac but buick blocks suck and Pontiac should have done a bigger bore.

    Good luck to you. I know how expensive the Great Race is. Those OE Pontiac springs will do good. Just don’t final weld the spring mounts on until after you get engine and transmission in and re look at pinion angle. Don’t go by the old Camaro angle. Working on 50 Pontiac wagon

    I’ve got the same ‘51 Chieftain that I’m just getting started on. Your video on pulling the engine will be very helpful. I’m curious why you didn’t rebuild the original straight 8. I’ve got an 81-year old master machinist that knows how to rebuild it, so maybe that’s the secret

    • @WestMountainClunkers
      @WestMountainClunkers 9 หลายเดือนก่อน

      When we got the pontiac we also ended up getting a cadillac 472 for the purpose of doing an engine swap eventually. While we did get the straight 8 running and driving, the water pump went out. So we decided to pull the engine and do the swap sooner than we originally anticipated. We still have the straight 8 and will eventually rebuild it, it likely will never go back in the car. May save it for another project in the future. Good luck on your build!

    FYI you can find tubeless rims that'll fit that old 5-lug pattern on '70s-era Dodge motor homes (RVs). You'll bump your tire size up to 19½", but that won't be a problem. You can find modern 19½" tires anywhere. Do you still have your rig?

    Do you have any idea why my crankshaft bolt keeps on spinning when I went to check for compression? And what damage did that would cause an how can I fix it?

      @kaceeenglish9370 ปีที่แล้ว

      472 motor. Thanks

    • @WestMountainClunkers
      @WestMountainClunkers ปีที่แล้ว

      Im not exactly sure, maybe its an old bolt and replacing it would prevent it from spinning? I'm no expert so take what I say with a grain of salt, but the 472 doesn't technically require a crankshaft bolt as the crank hub is pressed on. And from what I understand the threaded hole in the crank was corked at the factory after assembly. I know my engine didn't have a crank bolt. So you could probably just remove it. But if you're still trying check compression you'd probably want to turn the engine over with the starter.

    Have built 2 in the past, and now building another 69 472 to go into a Buick regal Wagon with NOS, again. The opening for the rear sump pickup tube (for 68-69 blocks), needed to be opened as that was Cadillac's fix for an oiling issue in later models. Mask off the area around the oil pickup hole, Fill the hole with cloth, and reem or drill it bigger while using a vacuum. Hope this helps

    Can you link the rebuild kit you used? Mine needs the same thing and I don't fully trust ebay 100%.

    • @WestMountainClunkers
      @WestMountainClunkers ปีที่แล้ว

      I completely understand not trusting ebay. However a lot of retailers on ebay are legitimate stores that just don't want to pay for a website. I ended up buying the parts on ebay, and a lot of times thats the only place to get parts for old cars. Below is the link to the retailer on ebay I bought mine from. www.ebay.com/itm/142987368962?hash=item214ab61a02%3Ag%3ACpcAAMXQMXRQ86o%7E&fits=Year%3A1951%7CModel%3AChieftain%7CMake%3APontiac

    • @WestMountainClunkers
      @WestMountainClunkers ปีที่แล้ว

      Here is a link to another store. Not on ebay. Looks like it's got everything you would need for a whole front end but is a little bit more expensive. Also, you can try searching for either chevy or buick parts, they are usually interchangeable with pontiac parts of the same year. www.kanter.com/i-30528166-front-end-rebuild-kit-delux-1949-1952-pontiac-full-size-4-shafts.html#!year%3D1951%7C%7Cmake%3DPONTIAC
