- No rental car today; instead, I wanted to share with you my 2012 Toyota Prius C2. I've owed this car for almost 8 years and I absolute love it. This is THE best cheap hybrid out there and it gets amazing gas mileage. It's not uncommon for me to get 70 mpg or higher while commuting to and from work.

+ the "C" stands for city, because this vehicle is designed for better mpg in the city than on the highway.
+ "Two" is the trim level. There are four total trims. One being the lowest and starting at $19,000. Four being the highest and retailing around $26,000.
Type: full hybrid gasoline-electric subcompact hatchback (same size as the Yaris)
Seats: 5 (but not really, you'll need some small passengers)
Color: Moonglow (white)
MSRP: $21,635 (window sticker price, I paid around $20,000)
+today with around 60,000 miles on it, I could sell it for around $7500.
UNDER THE HOOD:
Engine: 1.5L Inline 4 (front wheel drive)
Transmission: 2-speed CVT (continuously variable speed automatic)
Horsepower: 74 hp at 4,800 rpm
EPA Estimated MPG City: 53
EPA Estimated MPG Highway: 46
EPA Estimated Combined MGP: 50
Thoughts on MPG: Highway feels a bit right. But in the city I commonly get 60 to 70 mpg. But I've adjusted my driving style to purposely get better gas mileage, but accelerating slowly, coasting whenever possible, and using the Prius regenerative braking to its full ability (long slow stops)

HANDLING:
Spectacular. It's a small vehicle with small wheels, so it's super responsive and easy to maneuver.
ACCELERATION:
Not good. Actually, it horrible, but that's on purpose. This car is not designed to go fast, it's set up to be extremely fuel efficient.
CABIN NOISE:
Not great. Even at 35 mph you can hear the wind flowing through the vehicle. It's not horrible...but expect to have to increase the volume significantly if you're listening to something while driving on the highway.
FINAL THOUGHTS:
I was not a fan of this car at first, but it's grown on me. I like how practical the it is and I absolutely LOVE the fuel efficiency.

What do you think? I LOVE this car, but I didn't at first. It does take some getting used to since it's a pretty slow vehicle. Would you drive it as your daily commuter?

@@paulnadratowski3942 Prius drivers "never MOVE" because they never check their rearview mirrors frequent enough. I love hypermiling too but just as long as I am not keeping the folks waiting in the back. We have plenty of hybrid Toyotas used as taxicabs here in Vancouver BC Canada, and they are speed demons.

I own the same car and agree with you on all the points. I just love how easy is to park and maneuver in tight city streets. I ve seen auto journalists criticize this car for its hard plastic materials, lack of power, lack of trunk space .. they just don't get that many people don't need those and would rather save hundreds of $ in gas per year instead.
You do! Nice. I honestly don't see many of these on the streets. And I totally agree with you about the auto journalists. I mean, I get that this isn't a super luxurious vehicle...but that's not what everyone wants! What's wrong with a safe, fuel efficient, practical vehicle?
@@100RentalCars This was the best selling car in Japan for 3 years (2012-2013 -2015). Toyota in Japan will launch next year the new 2020 Yaris Hybrid with AWD, that's a crazy combo that we will probably never see here in North America.

I think it also helps that I barely drive it. I'm mostly on a train or in a rental car. I'm sure if I was driving this every single day I'd start to dislike it.

This is a gem and a gift to the smart and humble owners , I own this and the Toyota IQ and a Miata. This car was number one car in Japan for 2 years straight! It is also the first car you can choose from on the video game Gran Turismo 7 ! N. High way safety 5 stars ! Voted #1 most dependable car on Consumer Reports ! What is the reason why above all cars brands ? and models ? was it number #1 in Japan ? Well if you see one out there in the wild , chances are it has near 200K miles and still runs like new! Runs Cool , brakes do not need to be replaced for 200K miles, NIMH battery still has 80 percent charge at 200k miles! But most incredible is as a third gen Hybrid it gets 54 MPG on the freeway ,on the city roads it gets 55-60 depending on how you drive it (Pulse and steady driving). At 4 dollars a gallon of gas on a full tank for 33 dollars ,you get 400 Miles of range!
Change the Oil every 10K miles with synthetic and it will keep ticking.
Why should you trade this in for an EV ?YOU SIMPLY DO NOT! Absolute GEM! Another thing , Toyota IQ is also a Gem !
I own a 2013 Prius C III. I cannot tell you how much I love this car. No problems at all. Amazing gas mileage. It’s like a video game, trying to get the best gas mileage each time I drive. I bought the car brand new and have not changed the brake pads yet! Use the brake assist, it’s awesome!! I really have no complaints. I bought the car because I drive a lot for work, so I knew I was getting something that was not a hot rod. It handles great, I have no complaints. My only complaint I guess is the fact that they don’t bring it to the US anymore. Oh well, I don’t plan on getting rid of mine. I enjoy it too much.
The Prius in general is one of the most reliable cars ever built. I am still the original owner of a 2012 Prius C. I was not going to buy this car originally, but it was the only small compact car I could find at the time that would allow me to store my golf bag in the back hatch area without issue. The golf bag criteria turned out to be a happy accident. Best car I have ever owned. Finally had to do a brake job at 159,000 miles! A bit ridiculous when you think about it. That is about all I have had to do to this little titan. It just runs and runs. Easy and fairly inexpensive to maintain. Finally handed it off to my daughter who commutes to school and work with it every day. I have never gotten close to 70 MPG, but consistently hovered around 50 MPG from day 1. All in all, a great car.
I'm assuming I should change the spark plugs and transmission fluid after 120K? maybe the lithium battery upgrade? engine mounts? but there's nothing wrong with it after owning a used one for 1 year
i have the 2010 Yaris, bought it used and I think it's a great little car, don't understand all the hate in the auto media. Most owners love theirs and to me, that's what its all about.

Automedia does not like economic and reliable cars as they do not earn a lot of money from it. These cars have really low maintenance and super efficient, all bad news for new car marketing guys and so does the media who feed on them. I guess.
@@abhisekmndl true. at 188000 mi mine only needs the rear suspension replaced. drivetrain works near flawlessly. At 65mpg, oil companies won't support it.

this is one of the most reliable car in the market , the regen braking system will last 150k before need new pads , the 1.5 liter engine is well tested and the hybrid systems also bullet proof , will last 250k miles with ease. Not to mention 50MPG

It's a good little commuter car. The local driving school in my area uses these for Driver's Ed cars (these and Corollas, of which they have a few brand new 2020 Corollas in their fleet). I like the climate controls on the steering wheel, a nice touch considering the lower cost of these cars. :) BTW the 'TEXT' button on the radio isn't for the text messages on your phone, but rather to display track/title/artist/playlist/radio station information on the radio display so that you know what's currently playing. :)

The windshield wiper issue is true as is the glare on the Navigation/entertainment touch screen. That being said, I have a 2013 Prius C-4 which has a touch screen navigation and entertainment and phone system AND satellite radio and a dual function tilting or retracting moon roof. The dual heated front seats are a joy in the winter. 100k miles and almost no maintenance fees ( just tires/oil). It has no timing belt to break (it has a timing chain which will last 160k miles before it might need adjustment). No alternator to break and original 12 volt accessories battery change @ 100k. I also agree, 8 years old and LOVE this car (54-65 mpg combined highway and city). Have gotten as much as 70 mpg at times. Definitely my car for extended trips ( like 2000 mile round trip for $124 at gas price of $3+)
You're supposed to change the transmission fluid every 40k to 60k miles if you want it to last 300k+ miles.
I love small no non-sense cars that get me to work everyday for years to come. I sat in this Prius C at an auto show and found it quite comfortable with a better look than the regular Prius and the Yaris. I found the Prius to be the bigger and more fuel efficient model so I disregarded the C. Why get such a small car with 48 mpg when the bigger Prius gets 50mpg? You're telling us it gets 70 mpg?! We have a winner.
Exactly my thoughts. If you like / want / need a super-efficient little car, this thing is hard to beat.

- I don't like how regular prius drives (makes me nauseous). I have to take special candies, otherwise I can vomit. It has to do something with a vestibular in my body. This Prius C is rough, but I don't feel like I'm an astronaut doing centrifuge tests.
- Regular prius looks like a roach. I'll never own one because of its looks and big butt. This one looks like a toy, but it is a fun toy.
I remember we had a discussion long ago about this car. Like when you first started this channel. I was comparing it with the Mitsubishi Mirage. I haven’t watch the video yet but I’m so glad you made a video about your car. This was supposed to be my first car but it never happened
I love cars that do great on gas. Even if the Prius does get a lot of shit from car enthusiasts. Everybody gets certain cars for different reasons. I don’t need to haul anything or accelerate fast so for me, I’d rather pay Less to travel more than more to travel less. I know Nissan has something called E power and it’s a little different than the Prius technology. It’s not here in the states, but I was interested when I first heard about it. We’ll see how that goes. They had a freaking van that gets like 75 miles per gallon. That’s insane

@@100RentalCars yeah it sounded nice. I haven't looked it up in a while because not a lot of people on TH-cam even talk about it and I never hear updates about it. I ended up getting a 2000 Corolla. Not the best car in the world but it gets me where I want to go! I would love to upgrade my car, I just have the mentality of if it's not broke, I have no need to get another one. That being said my next car do want to be a hybrid of sorts. I think it's an awesome technology that can train you to drive more efficiently and can still keep up with traffic even with low acceleration rates. They are not slow cars, they just take a while to speed up. I could see that being a problem in certain situations but on most driving commutes, no it's fine. I remember when I told my friend I wanted a Prius he told me all these reasons I shouldn't. A bunch of biased crap. I make my own decisions based on the research I do and your Channel is full of facts. You go into every car unbiased and ready to review. I appreciate everything you do and the work you put in. I'm sure you've helped hundreds of people on TH-cam decide what car is best for them. You're well over 100 rental cars and you still manage to keep on going!
Do yourself a favor; drop in a CarPlay Kenwood display, or equivalent to your dashboard. Important to ask that they re-use your USB plug in the dash, they wanted to at first use the cigaret lighter plug, but I asked to keep that intact, and they used the USB/Audio input, bonus now it us a 5V/2amp charger, and connect to CarPlay.
Get a backup camera installed, and you will have a 2012 prius that has modern features. I have this exact setup, owned my second hand prius for 4 years, and drive it the same great scores. Keep it up!

MY prius met it's demise on I86 in NYS miss that little guy 2015 model 3. Waiting for a used 2020 Rav 4 hybrid very impressive mileage. You're so right when the car teaches you how to drive efficiently...

Accident winter either under a semi or in the median in a ditch. I chose the ditch front wheels ended up on the rear no bueno on repair. Will do.
Dear paul c: just heard the Rav4 hybrid has a problematic fuel tank that won't let you fill it up leaving you a good couple of gallons short.
I just bought one for my commute in Japan ($7000 CAD for a 29km 2012 model). It is much more enjoyable to drive on the mainland, where most roads are flat. Okinawa is a bit hard on the engine because everywhere is a little hill.
I just bought a 2015 Prius C and trying to get a handle on the various displays. Would like to know more about how you are getting such outstanding mpg!! I have achieved 55 mpg but not every time but consistently 50+ mpg ☺
The screen he showed. leave it on that screen.. and try to keep it below that center line.. you want to do this when no one is behind you lol. If you go over that center line, you want to come off the gas so it can reset and go back down into EV mode. Also try not to floor it and have it go into the orange mode at the top.. and have your ECO button set to on.
Cars are built for a purpose. There is one out there for everyone, I need an SUV because I need the 4WD and towing capability. You need a Prius because you commute.
I have a prius and an F350 crew cab lol . most of the time i'm hauling myself and not much... sometimes i'm hauling things an F150 couldn't haul.
I have a prius c one 2016 my only regret is not getting the 2 trim because I miss cruise control, and I added a aftermarket armwrest
Great little car. Do the higher trim levels have the Nanoe air purifier and push button start over there though? One thing I really like about the Prius C/Aqua here in Japan is that it has the Panasonic Nanoe function for the climate control. Which you don't see on even higher priced cars. 8 years later and the A/C and inside the car still smells great(No smell).

Those MPG numbers really are impressive, but I couldn’t handle driving a car that has such little horsepower. Going from a mustang to this would be the death of me
I agree. That would be a hard change to stomach. Thankfully, most of the newer hybrids (and all of the EVs) have much better acceleration.
And I admit, I do feel like as ass when a mustang (or similar car) is behind me and waiting for me to pick up speed after a red light. Sorry 'bout that btw. Anyway, thanks for the kind comment. Happy Holidays!

What've I done? Just bought a 2012 blue Prius hatch or $10k with 220,000km on it that amazingly still looks new! Ok - I ride a fold-up eBike to work. But I own the road on weekends on my Yamaha 1300 cruiser! Wasn't really sure about the Prius after Robin Williams used it in a joke until Alex the car salesman in Newcastle AU converted me. I almost rented a Prius yesterday from the National emerald aisle at Atlanta hartsfiels jackson International airport but the agent said I could take any vehicle instead of the prius. So i took a 2020 Chevrolet Impala with only 7 miles on it that I drove from Atlanta to Boca Raton Florida because my flight was cancelled and they gave me a flight voucher. I used it this morning to sell some stuff at my local swap shop.
For that long of a drive.. the impala would be more comfy.. if i was paying for gas i'd probably take the prius though
What kind of maintenance does it need? Do you have to keep taking it to the dealership for the 30K, 60k, 90k Services?

I’ve been wanting to find a Nice little used Prius c for a while now and I’ve been watching tons of videos.. but I drive Long-ish distances 500ish miles and was wondering if the c was the better choice would a regular Prius be the better Choice? I just love the C in every way though. Also. Why did your gauge cluster say that you only had 73 miles left on a 1/4 of a tank? Most of my cars show well over 100 miles left on a 1/4 tank..

Excellent review but 2 points I am confused on as I have same 2014 Prius C 2 now since 3 years as my beater car same color btw.
1: On my car Ev mode is disable at 35mph not 11 as you say in your video . Yes I haven driven the vehicle plenty of times on shot runs u der 34mph and engine will not even turn on and on the energy monitor it shows Ev mode on and as soon as speed exceed to 35 it turns off, so not sure why is yours limited to 11
2: I have driven almost 3/4th of the gas tank and achines 73 mpg highest and 60 mpg minimum but once I calculate the trip meter (after reset to zero on full tank) till low fuel light came in , it came out to about 51mpg . So that 60-70mpg technically is incorrect . Try it for yourself on uour next fillup and you will see what I am saying
None the less prius C is great cars I have 2 of them for in same house for daily beaters and I have other luxury vehicles which I barely even drive lol ! Proud C have paid off itself in first year (I purchased it used for amazing deal) just in what I saved from gas fillups with amount of driving I do for work !

Any reliability issues as the miles pile up? Anything I need to look for while shopping for one? Any insight on maintaining this car -- cost, problematic areas? Any issues with the hybrid battery? What's the manufacturer's warranty on the battery?

@@jayislander I ended up purchasing a 07’ Yaris instead of the Prius C. Thing I did hear from a mechanic is that the hybrid models did have batteries that went out 8-10 yrs later and were VERY expensive to repair. But other than that, don’t know much about it

I kind of fell into the C by accident . was shopping for a prius online at auctions and this one happend to popup. 13c3. It hardly looks like a prius.. i'd say it doesn't at all actually. If I keep this car 7 years, i'll have saved so much in gas that the car paid for itself.

I've looked into that too. You can get a touch screen with AppleCar Play fairly cheap if you're willing to install it yourself. I honestly think it would be a pretty fun project.
can someone tell me how I know if I have the 1 2 3 or 4? Please? I just bought a 2012 c and can not figure this out.
The bad: incredibly uncomfortable. the heater doesnt blow on your feet, and instead anywhere else on the floor, so even after an hour in this thing, my feet are frozen. terrible handling. It doesnt drive like a bmw or audi or Chrysler, but more like a golf cart with tiny tires, so you gotta keep a constant eye on where it's going. The mirrors are terribly small and useless so much so that the entire lane to your left is a blind spot unless you move the mifror so that the field of vision is far beyond the side of the car. I hate that the back window is so small, i cant see much of the road behind me because it disappears past the too of the tiny window. there are no defrosting mirrors and with the abysmal heating system, it takes a while to even defrost the vehicle--bundle up! good acceleration only if you floor it, and then the tiny tires spin; otherwise it's incredibly really slow and unresponsive to throttle input.
Good:
I've mysteriously gotten 75 and even 80 mpg in town driving through Salem OR. Im not sure how though, as it doesn't always work out that way. for my 33mi commute, which includes 5 to 10mi of freeway, on Cold days allows for only 55mpg; mild days 60mpg, and on a couple of warmer days I've gotten 65mpg. It takes an extra min to get to work unfortunately when trying to remain in the eco modes, so a normal 45min commute turns into a solid hour to save about $0.75 of fuel over simply driving it like a Tercel which, if compared to a Prius driven the same, gets nearly the same mpg when driven normally.
The bluetooth cell connection does work surprisingly well.
At 184,000 miles, it seems to work well.
Be time for a new electric battery soon, how much for those?

Im 5'11 260 pounds. Im used to being in a tahoe but with these gas prices its starting to get to me slowly
How long do you expect your battery to last?
I'm not sure. I've heard it's the first thing to go and that it'll cost around 4k to fix/replace. So far I haven't had any issues, in fact, I've been getting my best mpg in the last year or so (although that may be because I bought new tires). I've read posts from other owners online that claim they've gotten to 250,000 miles without any major repairs. I'm hoping I can AT LEAST get to 150,000. My C2 only has 65,000 miles on it. So hopefully I'll get another 5 years with it? We shall see.
100 Rental Cars $4k seems really high. I thought $2,500 was the norm nowadays.
@@100RentalCars That is why i opted for not buying this, I do drive a lot for work and keep my cars till they don't run no more, so I figured a hybrid will save you gas for sure, but then when the battery goes, it's almost the same as if the engine or transmission died as far as replacement costs.

@@pedrofernandez3893 that's why i used to dislike priuses, the battery costs and ugly.. but batteries have come down in price.. $500 to get them "fixed" with a warranty or $1500 new with warranty.. Now I have a C and a gen 2.
Your storage area back there is much larger than mine, yours is the 2nd gen. Yaris, mine is the first.

@@100RentalCars I'd say about half a foot less deep, but I can slide the rear seats forward about that much, but then there is almost no room for rear passengers. Also mine is a 2 door, not very easy to climb back there unless you are young and thin.

I had my since new. It never even hit 50mpg .Maybe 70mpg off a cliff with down wind

Great choice especially in flat and spacey areas. Already see the smile on your face while passing stored SUVs in a coming higher oil prices.
Pros, Toyota's legendary reliability (a little bit of a myth), fuel economy, nice exterior, quite good MSRP and a long term peaceful relationship.
Cons, Horrible interior (especially the plastics, where did they find those materials???), the awkward Walmart toy dashboard (huge difference between the European model) and most of all the lack of handling on twisting and turning roads.
I 100% agree with you assessment. Super reliable, but it has a very uninspired interior.

Your car is show room clean! Is there anything you don't like about the Prius C. My major problems with the car are:
-rear view mirror hangs down too low and it is big enough to hide a transit bus in a four way stop.
-beefy A pillar big enough to hide a few pedestrians while waiting for a left turn(or right turn if it is a right hand drive)
-nonadjustable headrest that pushes my head too far forward; and they also obstruct rearward view too.
-the left foot rest shouldn't have been carpeted...Toyota is just plain stupid for doing that!
I wish I could use EV mode up to 30 mph. I would LOVE to be able to at least drive around the neighborhood on battery power. Bit that's not possible. The system only allows you to go up to 11 mph...which isn't nearly enough in my opinion.
Hey Dominic - You might try moving the seat base forward a little and the seat back back a little. Maybe solve your headrest problem. I have the same car and it works for me.
@@100RentalCars my 2013 C3 goes in EV mode up to 24 mph. Try being lighter on the pedal. If you accellerate too quickly it will exit ev mode early instead of at 24 mph. Also did you know the center arm rest slides forward?
@@peterengland4745 Thank you so much for your kind suggestion dear Mr. England. I just have the headrest removed after I have tried everything. Must have tried what you have mentioned but that leaves the upper torso unsupported by the seatback and that resulted in a nagging pain in the shoulder after a long drive. Found the "forward head restraint" has been implemented in every vehicle built since 2014, there is no getting away from it. We will have to look for adjustable(angular) ones in future purchases.
When do you plan to upgrade?
When the wheels stop spinning. 😊. No seriously, I plan to drive this until the repair costs get outrageous. I've seen several online with 250,000 miles. I've got 65,000, so hopefully I'll have another 8 years before I need to think about a replacement.

100 Rental Cars until they fall apart. A few years ago I got rid of my hummer after 100k....never buying a GM car again but now I have a Wrangler and a 4Runner. I’ll get rid of them when the wheels fall off as well LOL
You would never get 70 mpg no matter how hard you try. Real mpg is very consistent with what toyota says. The best I have gotten is 50-53 driving like a granpa and driving without the a.c on 75 Fahrenheit. With a.c on the most i get is 45-48 max.

Sadly we were rear ended in December of 2019 and had to total the vehicle. But, other owners have reported getting 200,000 miles with very little issues.

I'm sorry that the C got totalled. I drive a 2013 Prius C, still going strong, looks just like your car, and I still love it. Only issue has been the 12v battery. Had to put in its third battery back in February. Thanks for your review!

No, I'm hoping to drive this one into the group. I've seen similar vehicles with 250,000 miles on them. I'm only at 65,000....so hopefully I have years and years before I have to replace my Prius. But...when I do, I'll definitely be going full EV. I've only driven a few, but I'm hooked. Can't wait.

My take on the Prius C having rented quite a few is that the C stands for cheap. No that's not necessarily a bad thing but you will notice it. This car feels every bump in the road. It's small... Noticeably small. Oh yes it definitely will not smoke a Tesla off the line or a 10 speed Schwinn for that matter but oh my god yes it is a fuel saver. No lie it gets way over 50 mpg even with my led foot. I totally believe that even 70 mpg is possible but you gotta live with a few somewhat big drawbacks depending on what your used to in order to get those fuel savings. I don't mind renting one but I'd have to think about it for a bit before I could say I'd buy one.
Appreciate the review but... Toyota making too many major compromises for these small cars. God help you if you need emergency acceleration or get in a crash, as it has terrible crash rating tests. I would not put my family or kids in this. Gas mileage is it's only plus but at the expense of safety, comfort, and fun. I'd get another safer used compact car with a stick shift and still get good fuel economy.
You are not half way to your breakeven for the $8k premium spent over a larger faster Corolla which would have sold for $12k in 2012 new ($16k-$4k typical discount for Corollas). Cost of Prius gas: 65kmi/65mpg: 1000 gal@$3gal = $3000. Cost of Corolla gas 65k mi/30mpg: 2,166gal@$3gal= $6,500. So only saved $3,500 (1166 gals), less than half way to breakeven. Current resale at KBB is about the same. If you compare with the cheaper Yaris with better mileage, breakeven would take even longer.
what if he didn't shop for discounts and just walks in and buys? would he have paid $16k for the corolla? Well if he saved $3500 over 7 years.. what if he keeps the car 28 years? he would have saved $14000 in gas on a $20,000 car. And then 7 more years his gas saving.. would have had the car paying for itself in gas savings.

"Handling is fantastic". Lateral g = 0.7 which is notably the worst handling on Earth, even worse than a school-bus. There is no other car on Earth that handles worse to-date. Get your act together. Thumbs-down. You have no frame of reference.

you don't knwo what you're talking about. The C has a fairly decent suspension feel. i've driven plenty of cars that felt like rolling couches that title through exits.. the C is not one of them. your claims are very exaggerated
