  • "Hacksaw Ridge" is the extraordinary true story of Desmond Doss [Andrew Garfield] who, in Okinawa during the bloodiest battle of WWII, saved 75 men without firing or carrying a gun. He was the only American soldier in WWII to fight on the front lines without a weapon, as he believed that while the war was justified, killing was nevertheless wrong. As an army medic, he single-handedly evacuated the wounded from behind enemy lines, braved fire while tending to soldiers and was wounded by a grenade and hit by snipers. Doss was the first conscientious objector awarded the Congressional Medal of Honor. Interview at AOL HQ in NYC for BUILD Series.

I really wanna see it, but may wait till it comes out on video. My dad knew Doss , he came to our church few times. Lost dad last November so thinking I may not want everyone to see me in the mess I know I'll be.

melonbarmonster don't be a jerk : Seventh-day Adventists do not force their beliefs on anyone and Desmond Doss understood that .Andrew Garfield Is also acting as a Jesuit Priest this year in the movie Silence : you gonna ask us not to watch that too cause it's promoting Catholicism ?

There were several memorable lines in this interview but my favorite is by Mr. Gibson, "I responded to the character of Doss. I don't think I'm like him but I want to be like that, you know? I mean I want to have that kind of unshakable faith and to stand by my convictions and stick to my guns (pardon the expression) but...I look at that and that's what I aspire to be."

Yes, an amazing movie, by an amazing director. But Mr.Doss' story is EVERY bit more amazing. A true gentleman (not so many anymore)and humble Christian. I'm glad I saw his biography before seeing the film..I only wish Mel had spent more time on the story than his love life, (maybe you should to dear, are the babies going to call you daddy or granddaddy, honestly!) I know Dorothy wouldn't mind:) The hands of God worked through this beautiful soul. How many more lives would have been lost had the army rejected him, how many of his fellow soldiers followed his example of faith as a result?! A place had been set at the table of Abraham for Desmond..

I rate it as so high purely because this actually happened, it wasnt given the old Hollywood once over to make it look better, Mel Gibson wanted people thinking about the soldiers and what they went through then and after returning returning home. And he did a fantastic job of doing just that, to the point where at some points in time your almost in tears because the battles he put on screen where so horrific you have no choice but to feel for the soldiers and what they went through.

I have asked this question a dozen times and never gotten an answer,,,,,, The company commanders trainers in Doss's boot camp,,, how did they end up in Okinawa with Doss? The officers and commanders in boot camp would have remained to train the next crop of recruits after Doss left, yes? Yet here they are on Okinawa with Doss,,,,,, explain this to me please!

My father fought and was severely wounded in this battle on Okinawa. He would never discuss what he did in the war. The day we buried him the man in charge of his military funeral gave the folded flag that was on his coffin to my mother. He then said to me you should be very proud of your dad and his military record. Long story short, he carried a flame thrower on his back going cave to cave and if the Japanese soldiers did not surrender he had to use the flame thrower. Before he got hit by a grenade my mother told me he saw entire families holding hands while jumping off cliffs together rather then be taken prisoner by the Americans. She said the Japanese soldiers told them that the Americans would rape and kill their children if they surrendered. When he returned home after the war it finally hit him what he had been doing while on Okinawa and as a result he needed a lot of counseling for years to come.

So very sad for your father. Shocking what he endured. And very sad that some of the American soldiers did exactly that later in the Vietnam war - in battles of My Lai and My Khe - mass rapes of civilians and horrendous massacres.
