So they're not poisonous, look tough and cool, are giant, they're relatively low maintenance and can season your salad with a spray? What's not to like about these guys
I got a little female back in june and she's a sweet little thing. She's like a little princess cause she likes to be tong fed and she neatly rearranges her enclosure. It's naturalistic enclosure so she has plenty of places to dig burrows and climb, and it's amazing just watching her make these lovely tunnels under the driftwood in her tank. She's putting the final touches on her wintering burrow because of course it must be perfect for her XD
@@Aquarimax Thanks :3 it was funny watching her struggle to decide where to put this one stick. She eventually stopped moving it around so I think she's satisfied where it is now.
I raised a house centipede from a very early stage, less than a centimeter in length up to adulthood (over an inch) for a few years. It was an awesome pet, very active and fun to watch. It eventually got sick and died, I think because I was feeding it with caught insects in the house mostly, and pesticides probably eventually built up in its body. I can’t recommend them highly enough. They are creepy to look at at first, but once you get used to seeing them they are amazing to watch, I have seen them jump and catch moths out of the air before like a cat.
I had something similar with a wolf spider (I currently live in Germany and they have a smaller species of wolf spiders here, I don’t know their proper name tho) which I catched under a drinking glass. At first I wanted to throw her out, but then I fed her with flies which I put into the freezer first, so they would hibernate and then later wake up in the spiders little box. Unfortunately she died rather soon, I think it might have had something to do with the flies I was feeding her, but she preferred them over the relatively large crickets my geckos get.

It’s an amazing pet, so unique. But the hibernation period, it is something many few are aware of. Great video and a very interesting invertebrate. Thank you very much.

Oh, how cool!! I was just talking with my dad about these guys a few days ago, I've always thought they are so neat. Definitely a pet I might consider down the road. Always excited to see your videos.
I have had mine (2) for about 9 months and while I like them I rarely get to see them. Somehow I missed the hibernation part in my research and now am concluding that the recent drop in temperature might be sending them to their tunnels for the winter. I am going to assume that they might have started hibernating and stop feeding unless I see them actively searching for food. Thank you always for your comprehensive information! PS. I was sprayed once and only felt a little itching and a pinkish spot between my fingers where the skin is more sensitive. It lasted a few days and healed with no further issues.
He also said that in all the years of owning one, it's defensive acidic spray never got in his eyes, and only stung once when he handled it with a cut on his hand. Also if you think about it, any pet in the world can possibly hurt you in some way

I got a vinegaroon for my birthday about 11 months ago. He was doing great, and became very fat. He went into hibernation around November. After checking on him in March/April, he didn't reappear. I thought he was molting, but in his closed burrow, he was carrying a large clutch of eggs. It was a shock to know that Vinny was actually female. I was thrilled at this video! We acquired a giant vinegaroon sometime this year, early spring I think. And I found your video very educational, as we approach hibernation season it was good to know what to expect. Curious about whether you check on them during their hibernation period. I was a professional zookeeper for 15 years and we brumated a lot of snake and lizard species for several months at a time. However, those species were all fairly easy to check up on, on a daily basis. You could open an enclosure and assess how the snake/lizard was doing. However, something that burrows is a lot more difficult to assess how it's handling the brumation/hibernation period. Also, if they're voluntarily undergoing this seasonal torpor, is it triggered by keeping them cooler later in the year, or perhaps varying photoperiod? I know with many snakes/lizards, they typically need a gradual cooling and/or change in photoperiod (gradually shorter days), in order to stimulate the brumation/torpor period.
Velo Celt Once these go down into hibernation, I try to leave them alone, although once when I thought they had been down too long, I checked abdv they had molted and were doing fine. Nice video. Was considering getting another. My first one was doing well, and then at some point the abdomen grew probably 3X as large as normal over the course of 2 or 3 days, and then it died. Was doing well up until then. Any ideas about what went on? TIA.
Oh neat, I had no idea you could keep these as pets. Also, where I am from everyone calls them vinegarones. They always scare my mom when she runs into one.
I freaking love scorpion like creatures, but this one in particular is not dangerous to keep right? Like, they wouldn't attack a human as quick as they would with their prey?
These are generally pretty safe. Avoid getting the spray in your eyes, and wash it off just in case if it does spray you. I have never had any real problems with them.

Lee Murrison Well, I am glad to be put into the same sentence with Clint. He is a gifted educator. 😊👍
I remember the Fear Factor show I watched when I was a kid. They made the participants eat the whip scorpions alive (not the same species as this one but they look intimidating). It was really hard to watch and I could see them really got terrified. Oh my god how can people eat these arachnids alive? it's really terrifying to me.
I know what you are talking about, any I totally don’t understand why they would do that either...
I like vinegaroons!!
Me too!
I think it'll be perfect for the temple of doom I'm startin up.
MondoJohnny I can see that!
Got mine from BugsInCyberSpace January. It has been out for a few weeks but then it burrowed and stopped eating. Guessing it’s dormant.
KenReyUbeSensei C: sounds like it. Normal for this season. Very cool arachnids!
Nice video. Was considering getting another. My first one was doing well, and then at some point the abdomen grew probably 3X as large as normal over the course of 2 or 3 days, and then it died. Was doing well up until then. Any ideas about what went on? TIA.
Pro their hunting is really cool
Can you do one on emperor scorpion and Asian forest scorpion
I do have an Asian Forest a scorpion, so that is coming...I have never kept an emperor though...
Very interesting video, but I was holding my breath all the way through. Gave me the creeeeeeps
I get that, but I am glad you watched! 😊👍
Thats an interesting little fellow
Lots out here in West Texas high desert. Stink when stepped on. Nasty little bugs...and they get bigger than the one he holds.
All bugs are nasty, but this one seems harmless enough
Oh neat, I had no idea you could keep these as pets. Also, where I am from everyone calls them vinegarones. They always scare my mom when she runs into one.
freeofme They are big and unusual enough to cause that reaction in many people, but fortunately they are pretty docile.
They are surprisingly friendly towards humans.
Fox Davion right, generally very docile creatures!
I found 1 today on my farm..I don't know I just kept inside a plastic box and leave it.😃
You need to make one on tailless whip scorpions
onyx I.X I am planning to do just that 👍
What temperature is suitable for the vinegaroon?
Room temperatures are usually fine, unless you have a very cold room.
Screams and involuntarily squashes it....Guess I'll have to take your word for it.
Whats the right temperature for this cute little aliens ?
Tommaso Mazzi room temperatures at work well. In the winter, the 60s F are good, and in the summer, mid 70s to mid 80s
@@Aquarimax thanx a lot for responding, but another little ask, how many times I need to damp the enclosure in a day ?
Clint Reptiles did a cover of this. ;)
I saw it, it was great! Stay tuned for some collaborative content! 😊👍
@@Aquarimax Would be awsome. I will watch some of your other videos now. you are more in fishes and aquariums then clint?
I freaking love scorpion like creatures, but this one in particular is not dangerous to keep right? Like, they wouldn't attack a human as quick as they would with their prey?
These are generally pretty safe. Avoid getting the spray in your eyes, and wash it off just in case if it does spray you. I have never had any real problems with them.
I know whip scorpion when I was a kid since I'm interested in bugs. I really thought it whips its prey before xD.
Pyrotechnic 17 I pguess it kind of ‘whips’ them with its antenniform legs as it hones in in on them...but the pedipalps do they damage. 😊👍
