Hi Alex, just to let you know, go back and watch the scene in the cinema from episode 7, the part where Nick punches Harry. If you watch Harry's friends in the background, not all of them are laughing and supporting Harry. Especially one young man, who will play a larger part in season two. Not all of Nick's friends are like Harry, and it turns out some will be very supportive of Nick and Charlie. I noticed this when I first watched it back last year, not all of his friends were laughing with Harry.
I think the reason Harry looks like he's going to cry after Tao throws the apple juice in his face is because the actor actually did throw it in his face for real. Makes sense that his eyes might've been watering. You can see him reacting to it for real in the bloopers they released. They COMMITTED.
The homophobe being secretly gay is honestly a tired trope, putting the blame of homophobia on queer people (Trope that the author of Heartstopper also hates) . Harry is just an homophobic straight guy who loves being the center of attention and being popular. That's why when Nick stands up to him, he gets upset, cause Nick is liked by everyone and it tarnishes his popularity. And when Tao stands up to him, his own friends start laughing at him so he continues to try to get the upper hand on Tao.
Sadly people like him do exist (The actor who was 16 and still in school while filming did get inspiration from bullies of his own school)
I agree that it’s completely overused and an annoying and toxic trope, but for some reason I never thought of the fact that it throws the blame onto queer people. That’s a really good perspective to consider, especially considering, ironically how a lot of homophobia gets thrown around towards bigots, using gay as an insult to them. Comarc performance is very underated on my opinion. He was able to portrait a genuine bully without too much stereotypes. He was very good at it.
@@FrierenFer I 100% agree. I also often hear people ask "Why is he talking like that ?", totally missing why he doesnt really speak normally. And that's because he puts on a show every single time. He's peacocking, speaking to be heard by all his friend around him and to entertain them and that was very smart of Cormac. The casting team really did a fantastic job and hit the jackpot with all these talented young actors

As of about 2 hours ago, Heartstopper is now an Emmy award-winning show, winning the award for Outstanding Casting for a Live-Action Program at the new Children's and Family Emmys this evening. The awards ceremony for the more traditional awards is tomorrow night, Sunday December 11th. Kit and Joe are both nominated for Lead Performance and Will and Yasmin are both nominated for Supporting Performance (these are gender-neutral categories). And Heartstopper is nominated for Young Teen Program, they're nominated for Writing for a Young Teen Program, and Olivia Colman is nominated for Guest Performance. They were also nominated for Makeup and Hairstyling but lost to the Canterville Ghost this evening.

@@ehipwell21 Same. I'm nervous for the actors because Joe and Kit are nominated against each other in the same category, as are Will and Yasmin in their category, so if one wins, the other loses. And there's a chance that the votes might be split between them to the point that none of them wins. I do think they can certainly win Young Teen Program and Writing for a Young Teen Program, and possibly Guest Performance (I mean, come on, it's Olivia Colman!), and I hope we see wins in the Lead Performance and Supporting Performance categories, but even if we get two wins there, that also means two losses. But even the show just being nominated for NINE Emmys total is amazing. I can't wait to watch it tonight!
So Alice Oseman (the writer) said that when they were trying to find the best platform to show the messaging, Instagram just was the smoothest to film. So that’s why they’re not texting like normal (like they do in the graphic novels). Thanks for this lovely reaction to the sweetest show ever! 😊

If I remember correctly, while writing the script for season 1, Alice asked teens on different social medias what was the most used app to message each other for their generation. I think IG was the top one (and yeah after they checked which one was the best for filming)
IG is also just a real platform people text on. Snapchat too.
Yeah I barely use text to chat with friends, Instagram is easier and funnier with sending reels and having something do do while talking
@@n0emiette In Brazil everyone uses WhatsApp (regardless of age). We only use IG to send videos and IG posts. And we usually only mesage to answer the posts we send to each other or to respond stories.
something that a lot of people miss (and i did too until someone pointed it out) was the tear that ran down ben’s face when charlie finally stood up to him,, u really see that he was just a scared kid who was so envious of someone being happy with themself so he tore charlie down so someone could be miserable with him
Yeah, it's such a tiny detail. And it's a scene that does not exist in the comics. It adds a lot more depth to Ben's character, in my opinion. Still don't like the character and I still think that he's an abuser. But it adds an emotional depth to him that wasn't there in the comics.
Absolutely. It explains where Ben is coming from: a place of suffering. Of course, that doesn’t excuse him acting like a turd, but it does explain it.

And after that whole 8 part series of love and tolerance and letting people take their time to get to grips with their sexuality and how it’s nobodies business, people decided to bully kit Connor who plays Nick so much for ‘playing an LGBT character as a straight man’ that he was forced to come out as bisexual to shut them all up

This show IS like a big hug. Perfect explanation for it. I felt so fulfilled and warm after watching it. Absolutely can’t wait for season 2
5:28 I believe that Harry isn’t actually particularly homophobic (which is why he also claims it’s not: he believes it isn’t because his _motivation_ isn’t homophobic). No, he’s just classic bully who latches onto _any_ characteristic of his victim. So he bullies Charlie about being gay because it’s an obvious characteristic, nothing more. Ultimately, everything Harry does is for attention: whenever he says something obnoxious, he’s always looking back at his friends for validation. He’s sad in this scene because at that moment, the attention isn’t on him.
Nick is also going to deal with homophobia (and Bi-phobia) at some point and I hope in future episodes Charlie recognizes that and allows Nick his own agency. Like, no one ever suggests that when Nick punches Harry it's not just for Charlie's sake. He's essentially being called
the F word also. I know that part of Charlie's insecurity is to internalize blame for the bad things that happen around him but still, sometimes we have to realize people need to and often want to take responsibility for their own actions .
Also, btw, love is an action not a feeling. Yes we can feel the rush of dopamine when we love someone but you actually *do* have to show people love thru your actions and consideration.
The punch isn't the best way to deal with this. Nick has so much social power (hence Ben wanting to be his friend and feeling insecure when Nick counters him in any way publicly), and even if he didn't have social position, there are better ways than hitting someone. We don't always know those ways, so it's important to figure them out. Edit: this is an in general response to the topic, not aimed at countering you. I loved your comment

Thank you for pointing out that Harry's homophobia also impacts Nick. It's so strange, despite the fact that Nick's coming out arc is a key part of his character's journey, sometimes people talk about him as if he's just a good ally. Something I like about the series is how they show that while Charlie may be the main obvious target of the bullies, their behaviour also impacts the closeted students at school.
31:58 The inside joke there is that a few years ago, Olivia Colman depicted Queen Anne, who lived in the 18th century and was bisexual!
It's so fun watching these reaction videos because different people pick up on different things. Like all the times I've watched I didn't even notice that Charlie just walks right past Ben on the field without even looking at him until Ben says something -- because he cannot stand for Charlie to ignore him.

Something I saw someone else suggest for Harry's behaviour is that he's basically feeling the same as Tao. He sees his friend Nick developing a close relationship with another guy who is not someone in their group or who they'd even normally be friends with and he doesn't understand it. He's also, like Tao, afraid of being left behind or forgotten. The difference is Tao to an extent voices his feelings and also communicates his concerns to Elle when he feels like he can't talk to Charlie. Harry meanwhile doesn't seem to have a healthy outlet and is too wrapped up in his hard lad image to actually just talk to Nick. So instead he just acts like a dick, hoping to push Charlie away so he stops being friends with Nick. Which doesn't excuse his behaviour at all, he's a dick, but it's interesting to understand his behaviour and also contrast it with Tao's. Personally I much prefer to think that's his motivation than bring secretly gay.
I believe that Harry and Nick were never really close friends, but Harry knows Nick is popular and potentially a rival for him within the rugby team as alpha male. Harry needs Nick to be on board otherwise he will lose some of the guys on the team as friends. He picks on Charlie at first because he is upsetting the balance of the lad group, but then because he suspects something may be up with N&C, or at least that Charlie has a crush on Nick, and if he can get Nick to be afraid of being thought of as gay, he might dump Charlie as a friend to preserve his reputation. When he sees that won’t work either, he just goes balls to the wall with Nick out of impulsive anger, figuring the friendship is basically over anyway. By the time they are all in Paris, he sees he made a mistake and he’s lost a lot of clout and friends, to the point where he’s one of the few people not invited to Tara’s party. He doesn’t apologize to Charlie because he sees he’s wrong, he does it to try to regain some of his power and friendships. Thankfully, Charlie sees through it and rejects Harry’s fake apology.
Dunno if anyone mentioned this already but when Charlie tells Ben off, you can see a tear forming in Ben’s eye in the last shot.
I just wanted to add, if you didn't know, taos hair looks a bit weird because he grew it out because elle kept getting suspended for her hair length and Tao grew it out to support her. He later on curled the bottoms so he wouldn't get in trouble :)

Also that Bash who plays Ben is very close to Joe who plays Charlie. You can hardly separate those two. They go everywhere together, and many times we have seen Joe being very comfortable with Bash, even sitting on his lap. This has led to once again fans asking if they are dating in real life. Poor Bash and Joe, once again trying to have a private life without fans intruding.

If you noticed, Charlie doesn’t eat much. He has a ED. But toward the very end on the final episode. He eats, with Nick. I think nick was the reason why he ate food that one time. That just shows how close they are. But I’m pretty sure Nick doesn’t know yet.

The books are set in my home town. This bullying is very recognisable. Admittedly I left school 30 years ago, but bigotry doesn’t seem to change much.

Holy crap, my guy! I'm a massive HS fan and have naturally watched a lot of others' reactions to the show. Yours is, by far, one of my absolute favorites. We share many of the same views, and I love the energy! Bravo. And, Yes! Netflix renewed them for TWO seasons, very shortly after this season was released, and they just wrapped S2 production a month or so ago. I'd strongly suggest reading the comics, they're SO Great.

I’ll never understand how Tao doesn’t get that it wasn’t just Charlie’s decision not to tell him about him and Nick. They were waiting to tell everyone when Nick felt comfortable because he isn’t out yet. Like how can you be mad at Charlie for respecting Nicks privacy and feelings? They would’ve told him when Nick felt comfortable, not that he ever made him feel like he could open up about it. I just don’t get how he doesn’t see that.🤷🏼♀️
