Mr Hady, I have a question regarding teaching the second conditional. some students find it hard to spot if we're talking about the future or present. It's our job to guide them, which is why I always try to make my ccq's highly effective. can you please see if these will do?
sentence : If I had the money, I would go on a round-the-world cruise.
    - Is this situation imaginary or real? Imaginary
    - Does he have the money now? No
    - Are we talking about the future or present? Present
meaning problem : a lot of students will say future.
One way to go about this is to ask extra ccq's ( i'm not sure if they're good enough)
1- did speaker say ' If I will have the money' ? No
2- does speaker mean if he has the money now? Yes
Or have two parallel examples written on the board, one for present and the other for future :
'If i had the money, I'd....'
'If i won the money, I'd...'
ask one ccq for the second to show future intent :
does the act of winning happens now or in the future? future
    - Is the speaker certain that he'd go on a cruise if he had money? Yes

Actually I would say present or future is the best answer. Both are possible in the example you gave.

@@Britishey what about if the example said : 'If I lived near a lake, I would swim more often' will it be enough to ask extra ccq :
1- did speaker say ' If I will live near a lake' ? No
2- does speaker mean if he lived near a lake now ? Yes

@@Sarah-ds1lg for me both. The main difference for me between conditional one and two is in how much likely the action is to happen.

    • @Sarah-ds1lg
      @Sarah-ds1lg ปีที่แล้ว

@@Britishey so I shouldn't focus too much on whether it's present or future because interpreation can vary, maybe I should take both answers? especially that the difference, like you said, remains on whether it's likely or unlikely that it'll happen. mr shady, can you provide an example of second conditional for present unreal situation, or is it always both present and future together?

@@Sarah-ds1lg If I had more money, I would feel more secure.
However, as all other examples, it can be both.
