Hi Fergus! first of all, thank you for this great content that you are sharing, I'm making the most of it since I am currently taking the CELTA course. Concerning your question on how we use CCQs, I'm thinking they are more suitable if it is a grammar lesson. If it is a vocabulary lesson for instance, I would opt for pictures or mimic the word if it can be mimicked. Those are my three ways of making sure the students understand a certain thing. However, I assume that there might be some other ways that are suitable for different focuses. So if there are any, would you kindly make a video about that? Thank you.
Hi, Fergus and thank you for all you do for us ! I have a question regarding teaching the second conditional. some students find it hard to spot if we're talking about the future or present. It's our job to guide them, which is why I always try to make my ccq's highly effective. can you please see if these will do? sentence : If I had the money, I would go on a round-the-world cruise. - Is this situation imaginary or real? Imaginary - Does he have the money now? No - Are we talking about the future or present? Present meaning problem : a lot of students will say future. One way to go about this is to ask extra ccq's ( i'm not sure if they're good enough) 1- did speaker say ' If I will have the money' ? No 2- does speaker mean if he has the money now? Yes Or have two parallel examples written on the board, one for present and the other for future : 'If i had the money, I'd....' 'If i won the money, I'd...' ask one ccq for the second to show future intent : does the act of winning happens now or in the future? future - Is the speaker certain that he'd go on a cruise if he had money? Yes
Hi there! thank you so much for reaching out and I'm so glad you found the content useful. I would say you a very much on the right track. The only thing I would probably avoid the parralell examples as it might end up confusing the issue (possibly). It's often a best practice to avoid using one grammar to teach another. However, I do see the merit in contrasting grammar. If you are interested in consultation please do check out my website. Thank you, Fergus.
Understanding CCQs will help a lot in language analysis. Watching your videos helped me a lot while I was doing the CELTA course.
Thank you Sumaya - I'm glad you found this video helpful!
Thanks, really great! Easy to follow.
