Scar was truly inexcusable in the remake. The whole point of Scar’s story arc was to be a megalomaniac dictator and Disney was scared to portray that in the remake.

That just shows a lack of passion and care for this project. Aside from the fact that this is just as much of a remake as Gus Van Sant’s Psycho, Jones’s voice wasn’t able to replicate what he gave us back in ‘94. It came off as reciting lines to a fanboy rather than fully voicing a character. They could have gotten Keith David, Idris Elba, Laurence Fishburne or Mahershala Ali as Mufasa.

@@Andrew_H43 Actually people have complained about him being cast in this, because if you’re gonna recast everyone, then you might as well recast Mufasa. The three actors I mentioned could have done as good of a job as Mufasa as Jones. If you’re actually stating that you don’t think so and so could have done a good job AS so and so, you might as well not even make the movie at all, and you’re pretty much admitting that your version is inferior to the other version.

additionally, some people will blame the voice actor but the director has a part in this, too. Fitting that this clip is posted the same day James Earl Jones reprised his role as the voice of Darth Vader in the Obi Wan Kenobi show. As I was watching the episode I was actually thinking of this clip and was pleasantly surprised that Vader sounded just as menacing as he did in the original trilogy. Perhaps it's the specific role of Mufasa or the directing he was given in Lion King 2019
Edit addition: a lot of people have commented talking about how Kenobi probably used an AI and/or a fair bit of editing/sound processing to recreate Vader's voice. It also probably helps that JEJ was likely emulating Hayden's own performance of the lines, so it was a large group effort to get the best performance of Vader.
If anything, that just makes me even more disappointed in Lion King 2019. The people behind Kenobi (and other star wars projects) knew that they couldn't rely on JEJ alone and went the extra mile to keep such an iconic part of the character alive. It shows that one group of people really cared about what they were making while another group expected a big name to be satisfying enough for an audience.

Idk, he sounded kinda weary as Vader back in Rogue One. Some of the line readings in Obi-Wan also sounded a bit off, more like how Hayden spoke as Anakin back in the day, so I wonder if some of that got mixed in somehow? I mean, they had AI ready for Luke in Book of Booby Fett, so they could be preparing something like that for Vader.

James Earl Jones gave an absolutely perfect performance in the original film. It was full of both emotion and authority, and he has the greatest speaking voice of all time and I will stand by that. In the remake, he just sounds tired the whole time and doesn't put nearly enough emotion into it. I don't really blame him, because he was almost 90 and has lent his voice and presence to plenty of things in the past to make up for one lackluster performance as an 88 year old. He will always be remembered as the voice of Mufasa regardless of the remake.

Mufasa could've been rewritten as slightly older (lions don't really have long lifespans), and would still have been just as much of a proud and strong king as he was in the original. He wouldn't be in his prime, but that wouldn't mean he couldn't still be a good father figure to his son and a good leader to his pride.
But ofc Disney doesn't give af, and apparently Mufasa's relationship with Simba in the first movie was "unrealistic". (Yes this was actually something that was said, look it up LMAO-)

I'm surprised he reprised the role of Mufasa. He's like in his nineties now and everyone's voice weakens with age, especially after nearly thirty years. They probably should have just had a new voice actor, but I think they just were banking on nostalgia. I hate to say it, but this modern version sounds like it was generated through deep fake text to speech. 😅

They really should’ve gotten someone else in the role. My personal pick would be Ernie Hudson (if you’ve heard him as Atticus in Infinity Train, then you know he has the perfect voice for Mufasa)
EDIT: If anything, Jeremy Irons should've been the voice actor they brought back instead of JEJ. Jeremy actually sounds like he could still pull off Scar unlike James as Mufasa
