Thanks for the memories. I forgot that these engines used washer/shims to align the fan driving belt. Remembering (?) the crankcase material on the VW air cooled used various alloys of aluminum and magnesium. Some production years and other variables (cost?) produced crankcase castings that were prone to alloy segregation. Threads in these cases were subject to tearing out. Still a lot of fun. Thanks.

Mid 70s I built a Bradly GT kit for a guy in my town . Nice clean bug to start with . We rebuilt entire engine , balanced crank and assembly with 1.800cc cylinders . Two stage Weber along with too much cam ( people had convinced owner ) . We fired it up and could hear knocking right away ! 20 minutes later after tear down we found one block main bearing in block had been cut oversized . The end of block had not been punch marked as any machinist would do . So after polishing the crank and flushing the whole engine and two new sets of crank bearing along with fresh oil pump we re assembled . What a fun car to rip around on . Loved the gull wing doors and the fact it would bring the front wheels off the ground in first and sometimes second gear .

Try running it with 20% oil and 80% diesel in the crankcase until it is nice and warm, all the old oil gets washed out. Maybe even to a point where the aluminium of the heads starts to shine through again (never had such an old, neglected engine to deal with).
Did this to at least three engines, in one case at least twice. works like a charm.
Before, everything under the valve/rocker covers was just black, after it aluminium and steel parts were nicely distinguishable again.

Living in Illinois at the time where they use salt on the roads in the winter I learned working on VWs early on an impact driver was a must. Chiseling off those nuts was a trick I remember learning from my old auto shop teacher back in the early 1970's because nuts are much cheaper than having to replace a nut & stud and quicker than playing with penetrant oil or heat.

    • @eugenepolan1750

I liked the added info on not backing the nuts off before chiseling - I was thinking the blows from the chisel would bend the studs, but not so with the nut still snug. This is something I can use in other applications as well. Thanks Mustie!

There was, back in the day, a tool called a nut buster which worked well for doing that. It fit over the nut and had a bolt that drove a chisel like point but you didn't have to hit it. I never used one on anything above a 1/2'' bolt but they worked well on that size and except for really tight areas they were worth owning.

Good way of removing seized nuts for sure... Reminds me of time we called a local mechanic 73 years old to replace the exhaust manifold on our John Deere 50... He cut the tops of the bolts with a torch then put a vise grip on the studs and proceeded to heat where they met the head but not to red hot and cycled between heat and spray lube, but in between he would ever so gently bump the vise grip left, then right, etc.. We asked him "because he was kind of frail" . You want us to get in there and crank on those grips for ya?? He said,,, " Years of this kind of work has taught me, heat, lube, and shit loads of patients with a light touch will get you what you need",, "Kinda like a good woman"... . Ive taken that approach to several nuts, bolts... etc... And wow.. Pure wisdom... Just waiting for the opportunity to apply it to a good woman though.... LOL!

@@excavatoree I was just making a joke about the motor, as I saw the almost finished product first hand the other day & I forgot how bad this motor was to start with until I watched the 1st vid ....to say it gives some of my boat anchor vw engines laying around hope is an understatement . Thank you Mustie1 for this engine revival series , great work & looking forward to the next episodes .

That is eerie. When you "listen" to a pond with ice. It creaks, it groans. It can even roar.
(This is at the end of Mustie's Video).

Nice video. I hope we get to see what the draining of the pan looks like after the kerosene soak.

It's great to watch a man who knows what he is doing..... Love the engine wrenching more than body work but I guess on a case such the Karmen both are required!!
And how can casually throw in the walk of death on a frozen lake at end!!!! Jeez Mustie.....I was clenching!!!!

Hello Mustie. When adjusting valves here is what I do. Please tell me if I am wrong. Remove plugs and valve covers. Get the engine on TDC. I don't care if it is on number one cylinder or not. Go under the car and find three loose valves on one side of the engine and one loose valve on the other side. Check and adjust all four valves. Now turn the engine over 360 degrees and get the TDC again. Go back under the car and find three loose valves on one side and one loose valve on the other. Check and adjust all four valves. You are done! Replace valve covers and spark plugs. Take care and enjoy the ride!

Great video, as usual! Neat sounds of the frozen lake!! When living in Iowa we heard similar sounds coming from frozen trees - a kind of reverberating twang.
