you can torch blast the plugs also, the steel will expand and help bust up the corrosion bond, you sure wont hurt the dense aluminum that transfers heat far faster than steel. thermal cycle them 3 or 4 times each and wrap on them with a hammer and steel tube/socket that's just larger than porcelain yet smaller than overall plug body. yeah you'll probbaly break the plug porcelain, but i'd rather break that than pull all the aluminum threads :) and yes by all means, just tweak them a bit and add magic spray and gently tweak back and forth while it works in.

This video makes me feel so good about the 70 Bus I dragged home almost 22 years ago. Saved it from a junkyard after days of begging and pleading with the yard owner. Got it home, fixed the battery cables... put on one of my own beetle carbs that ran good (when parked)... got the points set, ignition firing nice and regular... still no run. Not a single poot. Then I took the valve covers off... turns out it was a new longblock, never had rocker arms or pushrods installed. Dug around in my garage for a full set, put it together and been driving it ever since. 1999-2021 never had that engine out. Gotta love these VW's.
When fitting spark plugs to an aluminium cylinder head a high temperature anti-sieze grease must be used on the spark plug threads. This will prevent damage to the cylinder head threads when removing the spark plugs. It must be applied carefully, as the grease contains graphite and will affect the performance of the spark plugs if it contacts the electrodes. That's how we do it on aircraft piston engines anyway.
A lot of spark plug manufacturers specifically advise against this. They claim the plating on their plugs does the same job, but without the risk of overtorque that any thread lubricant can bring about.

How many Kangaroo's would you say that engine has in her? With only 1-cylinder firing at 50%, and the rest of the engine dead, I'd say she's down to 1 kangaroo.
@@stellarproductions8888 almost spot on. 1 Kangaroo and a Rock Wallaby (smaller breed that like its name hangs around rocky crags and cliffs, we call them torque converters 👍 because jeez they get up and go when yah shoot at em 😂) Also I reckon those engines have bilby nuts as well. We'll they at least look like bilbys nuts 😆 (small Australian native rodent, looks like a tiny kangaroo but it's a native mouse with long tail with a hairy tuft on the end to scare off predators) And I'm sure they have dingo drive as part of the transmission too, once they get up to speed it's almost impossible to stop em! 😆 Dingo's wind up slow and slow down slow when running at yah to eat yah 😂, by the way that's true, Dingos eat people in Australia if given the chance they're our version of the wolf. Jim. Don’t judge a book by it’s cover. When I was 17 I got a beetle with a comparable engine. A $300 of pistons cylinders and some seals and it was my only car for many years. Moved me from Virginia to Nashville, To Ohio. And amazingly all the way to Atlanta Georgia. Never was towed. Never let me down. Always got me where I wanted to go. And when I scrapped the car from dangerous rust. The engine went into a dune buggy and eventbough the main bearings could be wiggled by hand. I used to take it to the drag strip and launch it so hard it ripped the transmission mount free and smashed the trans against the floor. Oh ya and I still drove it home. Old machines are not the same as the plastic junk ppl own now a days.

How many Kangaroo's would you say that engine has in her? With only 1-cylinder firing at 50%, and the rest of the engine dead, I'd say she's down to 1 kangaroo.
@@stellarproductions8888 almost spot on. 1 Kangaroo and a Rock Wallaby (smaller breed that like its name hangs around rocky crags and cliffs, we call them torque converters 👍 because jeez they get up and go when yah shoot at em 😂)
Also I reckon those engines have bilby nuts as well. We'll they at least look like bilbys nuts 😆 (small Australian native rodent, looks like a tiny kangaroo but it's a native mouse with long tail with a hairy tuft on the end to scare off predators)
And I'm sure they have dingo drive as part of the transmission too, once they get up to speed it's almost impossible to stop em! 😆 Dingo's wind up slow and slow down slow when running at yah to eat yah 😂, by the way that's true, Dingos eat people in Australia if given the chance they're our version of the wolf. Evil buggers!
Thanks for a great show Mustie1, it fired pretty good for running on one cylinder!
Poor engine looks really rough, but I’m sure you got it running. Can’t beat a free unit lol.
Not only was it free, it was free (it wasn't seized.) :-D
I think that every high school student considering a career in automoative mechanics should watch these videos. They would certain encourage anyone to know that they can have a good career and a lot of fun. He makes it fun to mess around with all types of engines. If I was 20 years old again, I would have become an auto mechanic!
Your patience for this stuff is amazing. Can’t wait to see where the project goes.
please don't worry about the length of your videos I could and sometimes do watch you all day.
You should do a WIR on the '35 Ford.
Collab with VVG
@@4himsanctified Now that's a dream collaboration right there
Mustie and VGG would be the best video ever!!!
@@rogerwilco99 Base Ford model 48 in '35 has horizontal strapping in the grill whereas the base model 48 in '36 does not. However, some of the '36 had '35 style grill (factory leftovers?) and, since either grill would fit in either model year later restorations can be seen using the "wrong" grill.
I enjoy the 2 hour videos. Another great one Mustie! Blessings!!!
To me that engine wants to live she's still got gusto given those Mustie One luv Taps show's she's a keeper!!!; ) The Flame's was a Plus!!!; )
Watching fire coming out of that engine and hearing you laugh made me smile. Coffee on Sunday morning watching Mustie wrenching on something is a great way to start the day. I figure you will have it running next week.
Don't toss the belt. It's number matching for sure. Barrett Jackson is going to dock you hard.
Lol no kidding
Theres a formula to figure belt size
Bhahahahahaha
From the looks of it, those plugs were probably installed on the same day.
@Iron *Fe* - Can't fool me... maybe last night, but not yesterday! 😜
I was anxious for the tear down, looking forward to next week.
Screw the bus! I want that car!!!!!
Same here. I wonder how it passed Mustie's eyes
It didn’t, it’ll show up in a video in the future! :)
@@shakyhandpictures2185 .. lol i was thinking that as well
@@shakyhandpictures2185 Let's hope for it 😀
its a beautiful old girl, but that kind of car is not in Mustie 1's groove. he has that Ford Econoline sitting on the jackstands for a year now with no hint it will be touched again any time soon. Mustie is a VW and small engine guy. that old Ford probably has a large inline 6 which parts for it will be very very scarce. Mustie1 doesnt have a parts bin for it.
My 64 bug loaded with 4 friends and myself exploring Chicago on 3 cylinders lol it got us home.
That was a fun day ! Finally got it fixed up and running sweet on 4 cylinders and a new glass pack headers driving
lower Wacker Drive a fantastic sound like a hi performance race car!
Mustie 1 the man that can bring the dead back to life that's a cool car Jason has would look good restored 👍🔧🔧🔧👌
Mustie is like the Bob Ross of repair. Lets put a little oil down there . This is a good place for a tie wrap. Lol
This fellow was extremely funny about the prospects of this rusty engine.
Dont care what it is you're working on, you always make it interesting. Thanks for the channel Mustie.
"You DON'T want to snap these off..." (grabs 1/2 inch breaker bar)
Its been 40 years and I still remember that sound you make prying with a screw driver on that damn valve cover clip.
"Will it run?" seems to be the wrong question. "Is it worth my time to make it run?" seems more accurate.
Friday was Dukes for me!
And we say yes it is
Jim.
Don’t judge a book by it’s cover.
When I was 17 I got a beetle with a comparable engine.
A $300 of pistons cylinders and some seals and it was my only car for many years.
Moved me from Virginia to Nashville,
To Ohio.
@@fastinradfordable I was more commenting on the fact that Mustie seems to be able to make anything run if he deems it worth his time and expense.
@Jay Rawson Will you come back for part 2? Also yes. lol
Not a vw guy at all, but am working on a vw based Tun buggy project we rescued. Learned most of what I know from mustie and vwdarrin. Couldn’t have done it without years of these videos.
Mustie "without further ado""
Me looking at that engine: "without further adon't" "Better you then me"
I like the fact that you believe in reduce, reuse, and recycle ♻️ when it comes to old parts
"Well there's your problem"... Life is now complete!
Best video I watched over the course of several days. Great video
Well, how did that Vanagoon you brought on a rollback shake out? Did you replace the Hall Sender?
I am sure we have not seen the last of it
@@BILLY-px3hw Who's Billy?
Nothing I like more than Mustie's VW videos. All is right with the world.
5150mxvw in the house! 👍😎👍
😎
I love the way you talk to us like we're in the shop with you lol the only thing i would like to see if you would number your videos keep up the great work
I've been following you for a year on your Channel watch most of your episodes where did you get your mechanical experience I know you worked in the Machine Shop but on automotive and small engines can you answer that for me thank you
I wanna say he worked for a VW dealer in his teens? If I can remember right?
@@thirdcoast7259 .. yeah I'm sure Mustie said he worked in a VW dealer a long time ago
Preteen self taught wrench monkey started with a screwdriver, a pair of pliers and a hammer. lol
I am amazed there hasn't been an outbreak of Hantavirus on TH-cam with all the motors ect being brought out of hibernation! Nice job Mustie!
Looks like me after Taco Tuesday. Fire out of all the holes.
Although the long videos are good and I actually prefer them, I'm actually only able to watch them on well, my weekends which are Mondays and Tuesdays. But all your regular videos I really enjoy watching you teach me a lot about internal combustion engines! Please for the love of Pete keep on coming I really do want to try them thank you very much!
Usually, he takes the valve covers off much earlier...lol...😀🇬🇧
Much prefer 1hr max videos as opposed to 2hrs+. It's easier to fit the shorter videos into a convenient slot in the day as and when, rather than try to remember to come back to a half watched video at some later point. So thanks for splitting this one into chunks :D
Mustie has great car-buddies, no used car salesmen on this channel. Does this other guy have a YT channel ?
Yes, 5150mx is his channel.
Running on one cylinder out of four, gotta love how much the engine, as well as Mustie , are trying.
What does “M1571” stencilled on the fan shroud refer to?
Volkswagen didn’t put that there...
vw code for a bus engine,
@@mustie1 THANK YOU
Factory mark.
I thought it was Mustie1 571st engine.
I love your 2 hour videos! I have been a long time viewer and the long videos are great it’s like hanging out with your friend in the garage and learning along the way
