    A better way is to divide your shingle is by six. And a better wait to cut your shingles is with an old set of tin snips. And when it comes to your overhang on the other end of the roof, used the Snips to scratch a line from underneath matching your rake overhang. Doing this saves scarring your knuckles and a straighter cut.
    I told my husband he should be teaching roofing and gutter installation, he's been doing this for over 60 years and when gutters were still wood. He used to make his own Cedar Shakes.

    Dear Average Roofer,
    As I was laying my starter strips, I noticed that it has a super-thin layer of plastic over the tar strip. Shouldn't this be removed? Otherwise, how will the shingles seal to each other- isn't that what the strips are for?

    • @Average_Roofer
      @Average_Roofer  2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      The film strips on the back of each shingle are to prevent sticking together while the shingles are in the bundle.
      If it came loose and is covering the tar strip it needs to be removed.

    ive done idk a hundred or so roof jobs. mostly new construction.
    that was like 15 years ago.
    started helping a friend reroof his house.
    it had a split roof in the back. 2 seperate pitches that meet. Never had that before. roofing buddy said to step downwards to the eave, then work left to edge normally.
    worked great.
    Too bad every other aspect of this roofing job was a shitshow from the start.
    my fault for forgetting a few things at the start.
    but i have a question.
    If a house is not actually square, peak and gables are not perfectly 90°, do chalk lines fail by default?
    not 1 chalk line stayed true.
    starter strip lines were off. split peak line was not parallel with the roof peak despite careful measuring/marking.
    the 3 tab shingles we used, often times 1 bundle was cut slightly taller or shorter than other bundles, and none of the shingles had the precuts at the ends, so easy placement was not a thing. had to use a tape to line up EVERY DAMNED shingle. (not a small roof to be sure).
    so yea, can a house thats not square, completely screw with ...everything?
    i have never been so frustrated with a job in my life. 1 storey bungalow with a small addition about 1 square in size.
    55 bundles, plus all the prep, 1 nailer gun, and 2 helpers with zero experience, we started LAST FRIDAY lol.
    short by like 5 shingles, and hardware store closed just before we arrived to buy more.
    last row of shingles on Slope A, step flashing around chimney, and tar the lead flashing after, is all thats left, but this is probably the most embarrasing job ive ever done. None if the tabs line up straight from bottom to top, on the side facing the street. the back was perfect for a while. and it just veered up or down, all attempts to fix it by placing the next shingle down in a compensating way didnt work. chasing the rain away forced us to not undo half a roof. lol.
    ugh.
    anyhoo...carry on. ur better than i at this stuff

    • @Average_Roofer
      @Average_Roofer  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      killwalker 2019 thanks for commenting! So if the problem you were having was the roof being out of square, especially with 3 tabs that can be a tricky thing to fix especially if you want the roof to actually look good. Architectural shingles are very forgiving and easy to adjust. Always measure from the ridge down to eaves and in the worst case scenario start your first course by dropping lower on one end of the eaves to ensure squareness from the start. The gutters should hide this little blemish and the rest of the 3 tabs will look great!

      @@Average_Roofer sent some pics for critiquing. include any into ur vids if you like.
      You can do a "what happens if you start a roof incorrectly" video 😂😂.
      quick question.
      Eavestrough. water gets behind and under then drips down across the bottom of the front of the gutter the whole way during heavy rain.
      Home owner thinks drip edge should stop that altogether. I have explained that the edge of the metal at the back of the gutter is not snug up against the eaves. water dripsdown the drip edge. follows the path of least resistance and goes into the back of the gutter. drip edge has to overhang the edge. shingles overlap that. water travels over and under the shingles onto and/or past the drip edge, which is a few inches back from the outside lip of the gutter.
      aside from nailing the gutter to the eaves and caulking it, what can be done to make "ALL rain flow into and never outside of the gutters.
      basically they want the water to not drip over the patio entryway.
      Thanks a bunch. im really hoping this roof is functional.
      we just got doused in 11 minutes of heavy rain and winds, just before exposing the peak for the ridge vent.
      gutters in the back were practically useless.
      but apparently no water got into the attic, and the felt was exposed, 2 inches+ wide, and 34 feet long.
      lined up....not really no.
      functional...seems so. minus the gutters.
      Sorry for my long speak. ima geek.
      take care.
      loving this discourse.

    IM A NUBE. Do shingles go end to end across the roof or do you overlay the ends? Also you don’t show what happens with starter strips at top is roof. Do you jus bend it over and down other side? Thanks!

    • @Average_Roofer
      @Average_Roofer  4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      ERPINTERFACES the shingles ends do not overlap. That’s called “dutching shingles”. The ends just meet tightly together at the seams. The gap in between is okay because that’s the purpose of shingling in a pyramid pattern and offsetting shingles so you always have coverage under that water line.
      As for starters you can wrap them over the ridge of cut them off at the ridge line. Either way works.

    On my roof, There is a big gap between the gutters and whatever is the starter strip. It does not go over into the gutter. I would like more explanation about this starter strip. It obviously was never done correctly. There is also no drip edge. There is over an inch where the first row of shingles hang over the gutter. The edge of the gutters is higher than the shingles.. I think wind and sun has taken its toll, and the edge of the shingles have "curled" up, looks like a tobaggon could ride in the curl. Now. rain has started going behind the gutters, and out the backside. I thought i could jam some drip edge under the shingles, but that only directed the rain go into the soffit, and it actually drain back onto the brick walls of the house. There is no ventilation in the soffits. I took the drip edge out. Otherwise, the roof looks good accd to roofers i have had out here. But NOBODY wants to take off that first row of shingles and repair. They want to just do an entire roof. Small town in NC, near Durham. I'd love to be able to tell someone how to fix it. I guess different areas have different manufacturer specs? Every manufacturer here in the PNW calls for a minimum of 5 nails per shingle and a 6 nail pattern for high wind resistance. They all implemented this change 5 or 10 years ago as a 4 nail pattern isn't sufficient for standard winds but on steeper roofs it has a lesser chance of holding the shingle in place. Also they all call for a 5-5/8 pattern stagger. This allows for an effective stagger between shingles for the water to drain and makes less work for the installer.
    Also, please nail your starter higher, I fix way to much rot on the eaves from people nailing midway or low like that on their starter. Its just begging for problems.

    Don't learn roofing cause if you do you'll probably end up roofing or worse...you'll end up a roofer. No matter what you're promised It's a dead end job that destroys your body way before retirement and has no benefits. If you're on a crew that wants you to stock the shingles by ladder just go. When you purchase shingles free delivery is included. If you're running them up a ladder either they're stolen, your boss is a dumbass, or he just has no concern for your safety or well being otherwise known as a jackass. Actually there are many strenuous jobs in construction that could be a hell of a lot easier if we used modern technology to do the heavy lifting. Many articles about future inventions on construction sites that would change the game that never happened. You know why?...cause nobody gives a crap about construction workers. He's the last guy with his hand out to get paid after the architect, the inspector, the realtor, the home improvement store, and the contractor. He's the only guy left to try and haggle down after the previously named jackasses took the owner for everything he saved plus a loan. The only thing the construction worker gets is tangibility and a pissed off shook down customer. A handful of coated bolts cost more than a man's wage for a whole day. This ain't bob the builder. The fact is even Roofers don't want to be roofers.
