      I don’t think that matters as much as the paper and flashing underneath it. I believe you’re just as like;y to have wind-driven water moving in at this location. If water happens to drain down under the shingle above the starter strip AND under the starter strip (you probably have other issues to deal with), the paper and flashing are still going to drain water off the roof.

    Please stop making videos showing people the wrong way to do roofing. Our at least let them know that this is what NOT to do. Drip edge NOT supposed to be tight against your fascia board. It's recommended to be 1/2" away from to the process of water cohesion won't suck water up behind the drip edge. Ice and water dam should ALWAYS be used along the bottom, the rake edges and valleys and is highly suggested to be used on the peak. No one that actually knows what their doing uses tar paper anymore, they use synthetic. Starter strip is also supposed to extend 1/2 inch over the edge to help with cohesion. And finally, 45° cut the corners of your starter strip so you don't have the overlap build up. You said not to use shingles for the very same reason then did it with the starter. And if you do overlap the starter do the bottom edge first before the gable end. You should ALWAYS overlap whatever is higher on the roof.

  • @ghettohey2388
    @ghettohey2388 2 ปีที่แล้ว +19

    The best way to start the starter shingles along the corners at the rake and eave is to 45 degree cut both starter strips. Then they both are flush with each other. There both flat on the roof and the tar strip will contact itself to both shingles firmly.

      You do not necessarily need them, however it will help with additional adherence of the shingles along the gables, is creates a straight line to follow while cutting your shingles, and it also helps reduce the changes of wind driven rain from penetrating the roof horizontally.
      Although it’s not always required, it is HIGHLY recommended, and most manufacturers state the use of it in their installation procedures.

      No, it isn't wrong and your method isn't wrong either. The only point the starter shingle is a "waterproofing" element is at the butt ends of the shingles (aka keyways). Move 18" away from the rake edge with the water and what does it run into? That's right, the top of the starter shingle. Where does it go after that? Under the starter shingle and on TOP of the UNDERLAYMENT where it continues over the drip edge and off the roof!

      Better at the bottom if your starter glue can bond with the shingle glue. Up north nails hold down the starter, and the starter and shingle glues bond together. Down south we put roofing cement on the drip edge then lay starters in it, so the cement and nails hold down the starter, and shingle glue and starter glue bond together.

    Doesnt the overlap leave a gap and prevent the shingle fro sticking to the tar strip? How would you get them flish with each other?

  • @johnwalsh5123

    When you put the nails in the starters, is it ok for them to penetrate the drip edge?

    • @Average_Roofer
      @Average_Roofer  3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Yes. That is actually good practice as it means your nails are close to the edge of the roof which assists in adding strength to the starter shingles to combat wind.

    Did you install the starter strip 1/4 inch beyond the drip edge or before the drip edge?Hard to see on video?

    • @timphillips8966
      @timphillips8966 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes it was 1/4" beyond the drip edge, BUT this is ONLY for drip edge that has a 1" lip that extends beyond the edge of the roof! There are drip edge metals that are only a simple 90 degree bend with a small 3/16" bend at the bottom that is the actual "drip edging" that kicks the water out away from the fascia. Using this type of drip edge you'd extend the starter shingle one full knuckle (1") beyond the drip edge and not the 1/4".

I tried starting the shingles today and realized I just be missing something and it was the starting shingles. Lol. Your videos are super helpful. Thanks. Today I had a roofing/gutter company come look at my hanging gutter I requested a quote on the repair. They came out to look at the damage but the person they sent was under the impression that he was there to inspect the roof. I was heading home from work when he had arrived he asked if he could go up to take a look while I headed there I stupidly said yes, I’m thinking okay he need to get up there to inspect the damage to the gutters. As I am driving home I get notifications from my ring camera I open it up and see my love camera, watching him picking up shingles off the ground and throwing them into his car. When I finally arrive we go up the the roof I’m thinking he’s going to show me the damage he saw on the gutters but instead he tell me right away have you seen your shingles lately I said no and he point out the am area that had a patch of missing shingles, I asked him those are the ones I seen you throw into ur car through my camera. He responds with oh I was them cleaning up since they were already hanging and continues on to sell me on getting a whole new roof replaced with no out of pocket cost besides the deductible to the insurance company. He mentions how because I am missing shingles they can file a claim for wind damage. I’m thinking to myself well clearly he ripped the shingles off and is now trying to tell me the damage was there and I need a new roof. I tell him again that I only called them for a gutter repair quote and he’s like of well I was told this was a roof job. How shady was that and what do you recommend I do. Sorry I’m not sure if this is the place to ask this but I’m lost as a young clueless homeowner with zero guidance it seems everyone is just trying to take advantage of that. That company sent me a contact to get the roof replaced after the whole ordeal and offered to get me in contact with someone for just the gutter if I chose to just do the gutter. Which was my whole plan to begin with but now I have missing shingles on my roof from where I believe this guy just ripped off for what ever reason other than to get me to contract them

    So many videos show the starter strip as a shingle rotated 180 degrees. This puts the adhesive tab five inches away from the bottom of the first row, increasing the chance of wind lift. Cut the tabs off if using a regular shingle as a starter and install with the adhesive at the roof edge. This video clearly shows the correct way a starter strip has the adhesive at bottom of the first row.
