  • In the early part of the 20th century racetracks became a battleground for gangs across the country. A Birmingham gang called the Brummagems was top dog and built up a criminal network extending far beyond their city. Over 80 years later Birmingham gangs were an even deadlier proposition and a drive by shooting with a machine gun killing innocent bystanders shocked the nation.

The youth need to realise they are not soldiers enlisted by the government to defend and regulate their areas, they are simply residents by circumstance. Most of the time on my own and I never ran into serious trouble, exploring everything by public transport and by foot. Some cities I loved and others not so much but two of them I will never ever visit again because I felt uneasy the minute I arrived until I left again. One is Brum (and Luton is the other one).

@Phil-D83......I don't know if Birmingham had prohibition or not, but it had the Cadbury family - who were Quakers and essentially banned alcohol or any form of 'entertainment' in the City. In fact, this is the reason why 'organised crime' established itself in Birmingham from the late 1950's and early '1960's. [by the likes of Eddie Fewtrell].
Not sure why this is completely omitted from this documentary - Fewtrell ruled Birmingham with an iron fist [he actually ran the Kray twins out when they tried to muscle in!] It is a reasonably well-known fact that when carmakers such as the Austin-Rover group began opening large factories and subsidiary industries started moving into the Birmingham area there was a huge demand for nightlife, pubs and other forms of entertainment.
People literally had nothing to do or nowhere to go in the evenings and on the weekends - except Quaker and Temperance meetings. Birmingham City Council [strongly influenced by the Cadbury family] came to the rather bizarre conclusion that only lowlife scum would want to drink alcohol and go to bars and clubs - so they granted all the licences to other lowlife scum such as Eddie Fewtrell to operate it.
As a result. Fewtrell [and a number of other 'gangsters'] controlled virtually all of the nightlife in Birmingham. These gangsters quickly stablished their own 'territories' and there were regular fights between gangs if other members strayed into an opposing gang's territory. [quite a few ended up in the Grand Union canal as a result of these altercations].
This situation remained pretty much unchallenged until the 1980's when Birmingham decided it needed to 'spruce itself up'. But to be honest it was too late by then. Birmingham had established a terrible reputation for itself by that time and no manner of elaborate facelifts would ever change that.
