When living in Manchester in Oldham prior to moving to Ashton under Lynn , I only heard more about this gang who frequently was seen in local pubs . I always held duel citizenship , American / British since birth attending schools in both countries. I was warned to stay away from them and for the most part i did. I ended fighting two who attacked my girlfriend after coming back from my deployment first and after that, they no longer messed with the family thankfully. All they have is more of a thug reputation then anything.
You're talking utter shit. Two of the QSG attacked your girlfriend 🤔 Yeah alright. Turn it in you complete fantasist. And they didn't have a reputation as thugs..they dealt with their own kind..not the everyday man..and certainly not women.
These guys turned Goldilocks away from the 3 Bears House, plenty of claret spilt but not one spoon of porridge dropped, man that was a heavy day with plenty of shit in the woods, it was like NAM back there man 😂.
Nothing to be proud of and only good in a gang . Jimmy the weed is a legend in his own mind. He has done really well in life a council house in whythenshawe
Correct and even stated so by the leg end himself Sir Weed in his book QUOTE :: " In his autobiography 'The Boys Are Back In Town', notorious QSG member Jimmy 'The Weed' Donnelly explained how the popular version of events is "cobblers" and in fact The Krays were friendly, and it was the police who confronted the twins and told them to "behave themselves" before they left Manchester peacefully the next day "
I can't help but think they weren't successful at all. Being in trouble and locked away aged 12 - being locked up becoming a constant event. To me that means failure because they were caught.
Personally I don't think being a thief is anything for anyone to be proud of and I don't see why its ever the responsibility of others to teach you not to be a thief and a criminal. Those are your choices you make, when you decide to become a leech on society. Being poor doesn't mean you have to make these choices.
To my understanding Jimmy The Weed was named that because he sold cannabis and it was frowned upon by the original members of the QSG. It was used in a disparaging way. Drugging up the children of the families they knew in the areas they lived in wasn’t a way they were going to make money. A good portion of the money that the members of the QSG got through criminal activity was funnelled into legitimate businesses (granted not always run in a legitimate manner). Some lost money and run business into the ground. Some died wealthy as respectable hoteliers and boxing promoters.
My mate's old fella was a friend of one of the QSG- can't recall who it was. He went to his house asking for money- his dad had none to give. A lot of the talk about these people is BS. How successful could he have been to have to resort to asking someone he didn't even know that well, to lend him a couple of grand?
Was cannabis called 'weed' back then, when nearly everything available was hash? Correct me if I'm wrong, I live in the south but 'weed' only became a saying here a good while after the skunk took over in the 90s. Before that cannabis was called pot, gear, puff or draw but never ever weed. Weed itself was always called 'grass' until 92 or later, and then was called skunk as a generic term whatever the actual strain. I'd say maybe 95 before weed became the only or main phrase used ..
Thank you my sister and I had hell living in Clayton with the mods and skinheads my grandad Louie worked at Smithfield Market and the QSG sorted it.💙💙💙
My dad use to be a driver for these lads he told me he took them from a put to a club one night and got a grand in cash and I remember as a kid he told my mum it was more money than he earned in a year.
True but I come fro. This area and since I was a kid there was the story that the krays came up north and were made to turn back on the m6 as it was then by the bands in town. I always considered it an urban legend as all towns /city’s have , but maybe it was true?

I have grown up and lived in Manchester all of my life! I met Douglas with my Sister when we were young children and he was a true gentleman, he took us for a spin in his 'minimoke'. Douglas Flood is the man who was reputed to be the person who turned 'The Krays' back at Piccadilly station . Not sure if it is really an 'urban myth', but years ago my Dad said an earlier Gangster 'Jack Spot' (king of the jews) from London had been told NOT to try to take over Manchester by Italian Immigrants , so there may be some truth in the legend , or a combination of the two, or three? Great legend though! From a time when Folk looked after each other! dx
The Krays were really only big in the East End of London and didn't really try and control other areas outside of London so I doubt this ever happened. Cant imagine them going a train either. An urban myth like the so called QSG of the 60s who never had a serious criminal conviction amongst them.

Although I was only a kid at the time the pub on our estate was run by a qsg member, there was never any mither and he organised lots of social events including a fundraising football match in aid of Aberfan. Later on I worked for a few of the lads, I was never short of work and always paid extra at Christmas, I was part of a core of tradesmen and we all worked well together
I can only say all the people I worked for were honorable and served the local community well.

In every city I've heard the claim that 'the Krays were ran out of...'
As with the vast majority of stories relating to crime, the stories were lies.

Yes It's not true, my Grandad was involved with these crowds. He was very close friends with Jimmy swords and QSG his whole life before Jimmy died. Great to hear stories
They are Londoners so they would get ran out of anywhere except London obviously

Nothing to be proud of and only good in a gang . Jimmy the weed is a legend in his own mind. He has done really well in life a council house in whythenshawe
That’s ancoats in town
They didn't see the krays off as such, the krays came to Manchester and left because the police was monitoring their every move.
Fear is never respect.
How successful could he have been to have to resort to asking someone he didn't even know that well, to lend him a couple of grand?
the quality street gang were a joke really, named after a quality street advert absolute joke in manchester
He literally told you where he got his name but you seem to know better than the man himself.....🙄
And now alot of them live in Cheshire and the nicer bits of south Manchester. Turns out funnelling money into businesses worked out well.
Krays were never sent packing. Not in Manchester Liverpool Newcastle or anywhere. All local myths.

I have grown up and lived in Manchester all of my life! (except for one year AYR in Scotland in 2003)
My late Father worked for 'Douglas Flood for over 20 years at his many clubs throughout Manchester, he started off working for 'Doug's' Mother or Mother in law ( I can't remember which) at 'The Old Loom' pub on Moston lane in North Manchester in the late 1950's , and a young 'Douglas Flood' was starting his career (RINGING CARS, and breaking enemies ankles across kerbstones), he liked my Dad (ex Royal Navy, good looking with bags of Southern Charm, as he was from 'The West Country' and had arrived in Manchester, having met a 'WREN' who was older than him and had a child with her, my older Brother Steven ) and said to him; 'One Day Billy, you will work for me'
My Late Dad worked firstly for 'The Moss Brothers' at 'The Domino club in West Gorton, as a waiter in the evenings (about where The Eithad is now, Home of Manchester City Football club, he would later work for Johnson and Nephew steel works who were also on the same site) (he worked as an Engineers mate 7 days a week too) he later worked for Douglas Flood as a waiter at his many nightclubs; The Broadway, The Northern, Blighty's, Tramtracks etc etc ! From a time when Folk looked after each other! dx
The Krays couldn't even take over London.
Dougie Flood used to be a body guard for my uncle
