I have also lived and worked as a nurse in some of the worst areas of California and I would say the same, I was treated with respect and people were nice to me. There were times while filling gas at night or getting breakfast early morning where I felt danger, but for the most part the people in the city were nice 🤷♀️
Never thought I would see a documentary on this! Crazy but true. Born and raised in Detroit, off 7 Mile right down the street from Osborn High. Tough area is an understatement. The hood breeds 2 types of people: those who never want to leave and those who can’t be stopped from leaving. Left at 19 for a better life and never looked back. It’s my city and will always be my hometown but you can’t pay me to visit some of my childhood locations.
I could not agree with the two types comment more. I was born and raised and got out of there at 19. I’m glad for the upbringing because it made me who I am. I have gone back to my childhood home and it’s barely a standing structure. My old high-school (Redford) bulldozed and now a grocery store. It’s sad but also gives you gratitude.

As a person who was born and raised in Detroit. It is dangerous but I walked these streets many years. I was a homeless drug addict and stayed in abandoned houses all up and down 7 mile. If you're weak you'll get eaten. I'm clean for 6 years now and don't go that way anymore. Can't believe I survived it.
It was pretty shocking to come across this video. I lived two houses off 7 Mile Rd from 1969-1985 and my childhood was riding bikes, playing outside until the street lights came on, getting Bomb Pops from the ice cream man. How quickly things can change when a city’s people lose opportunity and hope. I pray for Detroit.

👏 when I worked at Motor City casino well did a lot of charity events for the schools and taught kids how to use proper dining etiquette. I love stuff like that.
I used to live in Detroit and one time I got in a car accident on 7 mile. A cop car drove by as it happened and kept driving without stopping. True story.
This is honestly really depressing, and eye opening. People ought to see how difficult life is- instead of always seeing instagrams and tiktoks of people living big. It's humbling to know how rough some people got it. What a nightmare it must be.

I've been clean and sober for 14 years now, and when I was in therapy for my addiction, one thing my drug counselor impressed upon us was to actually consider where our drugs are coming from . We spoke about gang violence and cartel murders, and for the very first time, I really did consider it. I couldn't be happier knowing that the gangs and cartels no longer have me to help fund their wars.
That ex gang guy trying to raise his kids in Detroit seems like such a good dude. That's the type of guy we need to help. I hope his kids manage to get a good education

Black on Black violence is the biggest killer in this country amongst young African woman and men but it’s looked past as something that’s not an issue but if Black Lives Matter than we need to prove that to everyone else by helping each other out first

@@rscott2247 Since this show came out which was obviously some years back Detroit has gone under a fairly large rejuvenation with competitive incentives to attract new businesses to the city as well as a major cleanup of run down areas such as that displayed. I’m from London, UK so only know what I’ve read. It would be good to know what locals think about the changes.

This behavior is like living in a cocoon you can never escape. So, turn to gangs, guns, drugs. Then you talk about what you don't have, what you want to do.... Take many seats. This is an old comment but I'll reply. They did a survey with inner city kids here where I live. There was an alarming rate of teenagers who thought they would be dead by 21. I can't remember the percentage anymore.

My maternal family has been in neighbouring Windsor, Ontario (across the river) since 1952 (from London🇬🇧). I was born in Windsor in 1974, moved in 1977, and have been in British Columbia since 1981. My mother's 4 sisters and their kin all still live in Windsor. I haven't visited since 2004, but it's always amazed me how a mere, 2-3 minute drive between Windsor and Detroit is like ... day and night in terms of safety.

It’s crazy how fast Michigan switches up. If you drive a half any way you are surrounded by 2-5 million dollar houses and if you drive 3 hours north you enter some of the most beautiful country on this side of the Rockies
Not quite the same but I go up and down the country with West Brom in England and you see the same here in some places. When I go down to millwall we drink in London Bridge before then make our way to Bermondsey (millwall). Literally one stop on the underground between London Bridge and south Bermondsey but the difference in the areas are night and day

Michael, I put my family through hell while i was not sober, but know that I am sober, my family has it much, much better--even on bad days. Just being sober is worth so much to my family, even if I feel terrible, or have a quiet negative attitude or thoughts. During those times, I have to remember what a blessing it is to my family for me to be sober. I hope you can draw a parallel to my story to yours. It ain't about the money, or easy hours. It's about much more than that. Keep going brother.
I was a truck driver in the late 90s and delivered a load in Detroit. I didn’t know much then about that city. Parked my truck close to my delivery site. At around midnight, I heard gun fires close by. I left the place and came back in the morning
I delivered there about a month ago and had to ask the gas station attendant how close I was to the trouble. I was fine where I parked, but not by much.. a mile in one direction and I was asking for trouble
April of 2016, I delivered to the orange big box builder's supply on 7 Mile road. The original plan was to sleep somewhere enroute, but heavy fog slowed me down so much, that I had to drive straight through to make my delivery appointment. Parked in the lot in front of the place, and a police chase went right past at 3 AM, and somebody was shooting. Did a search online, and discovered that there had been a murder IN THE PARKING LOT where I was parked a month earlier. When I left, my entrance ramp to I-94 was closed, and I had to reroute. I drove through the neighborhood with burned out and tagged houses for blocks and blocks. White knuckle trip.

I was born in Michigan back in 1958 and as a young Man we used to go to wonderful jazz festivals in Detroit. It really was at one time and exciting City to visit.
Detroit used to be a diverse melting pot that had great ethnic festivals. The music, food, and introduction to so many different cultures was wonderful. That's all gone now - has been for a long time. Lots of reasons it happened - none of which are allowed to be spoken of. It's really sad. It's also a big loss. It will never get better.
I was born and raised in Detroit. I lived off 7 mile for 13 years and never had a problem. I worked,and came home. And played basketball all around 7 mile. Grew up of 6 mile and livernois as well. Never had any problems. But its a lot different now.
I grew up in this area in the '50s and '60s. It was like a small town with nice stores, schools, and libraries. We never locked our homes or cars and everyone looked out for each other. We had people from many different countries as well as some Mexican and blacks. Most men worked in factories, in construction, and for the city. The cops were visible day and night and were active in the neighborhood. I remember sitting on the porch in the summer, sometimes until midnight talking with friends and family. When it snowed the men would go out and shovel the walks, streets, and alleys.
It's obvious that black gangs and drug dealers ruined this city, and the GVT and police have no way to stop drug deals from happening...I feel sorry for all the good, hard working people who've witnessed this yet can't say or do anything because they'd just be called racist and then beaten up by people in town or worse...they ruined it lol
it's not about owning the property though, is it? It's about being able to distribute freely in their territory, the property there itself doesn't mean much

Go for it. Let us know how well that works for you. Just go up and knock on their door, let them know you saw the doc on TH-cam, and decided to Google their location. Then proceed to tell them you just want to see everything up close and personal.
I travel a lot. One of the biggest indicators that an area is unsafe is the gas stations. You'll know the feeling when you get out of the car. It's like a 6th sense we all have. I've found this to be true no matter the country. I have never been wrong.
Not all people have this feeling just like a lot of people lack situational awareness so thus is what leads to people being in unsafe areas without knowing
They are extremely poor, the whole city is poor. Crack costs $10 a rock? You have to sell a whole garage full of rocks to make a living. Life is very hard. Be happy you're not selling crack.
Crack might be cheap but guess what? It takes over your brain and you spend every god damn penny you got on it. Every time you pick up you say just one but you pick up 10-20 times a day. And after awhile you don’t even like it, you are just a slave to it.
I grew up and lived in Detroit off the westside near Grand River/Meyers/Wyoming area from 1974-2015. Never had an issue in the city during the 40 years there.

Censor the faces of the criminals, but then film the guys that actually try to capture them? Brilliant. Edit: For those that didn't get it, my point is that the bounty hunters should also have their identity protected.
Its because most of the people who participate in these documentaries are actually informants. If they show the face of the informant, someone recognizes them and gets killed, then HOW will they get the information? Do research on informants and how they are protected. Different laws in different states allow certain kinds of protections and that also means being protected during documentaries in which they are basically selling information to remain in the loop.
I grew up on Puritan Ave...another notorious street in the D....had seen damn near everything you can think of..my pops finally got us outta there when I was a teen & Ive only been back to visit family a handful of times in my adult years
I’m in Detroit everyday. Seven Mile is definitely rough. Away from Downtown/Midtown the city does get rough. Before Covid I feel the city was going good but the last year especially I’ve seen a big difference in the inner cities. Detroit will get better little by little. The abandoned buildings/blight is a huge issue in the city.
I thought about buying a house or multiple since they’re so cheap. Tidy up the place and try and revive it. Only problem is the crime will be a big deterrent. The government screws everything up, y’all should get Whitmer out of office. 🤘👍

Between the age of 16 to 18 (59 yo now) I use to work one of the local food markets, cart collection, bag boy, stock boy, helped older folks carry out their groceries etc etc to finance my education market location roughly in this area of this doc (7 mile and Conant), not once there was a problem (a serious one anyway), wanna know the secret ? I’ll tell u, treat ppl with respect be it drug dealers , prostitution, drug users, alcoholics, etc in fact if someone looked shady entering the store, the guys with some street respect waited around till the shady guy left . There was a lady head cashier worked same location for 20+ years and acted as asst manager her name was Phyllis, (RIP) everybody respected and treated her like a mother and again without issues as if there was a code of honor being followed . Remember, treat ppl with respect regardless of their lifestyle.
Its not a no go zone to the locals, it's a no go zone for suburbanites and other outsiders....Maseratis and nice cars are a dime a dozen in Detroit man.
As someone originally from Detroit I promise you 60% of the city is NOT ILLITERATE….. I never have met an adult from Detroit who can’t read. Much of this documentary is sensationalized for entertainment.

I'm not even gonna lie, I went out there with my buddy to drop off his daughter on the way to Indiana. We were in a brand new 2013 rental caddy and not even 2 minutes after we exited the free way at 2a.m. we were being followed by a 80s box Caprice with 5 guys in it. My boy called his brother and told him and when we pulled in the driveway, his brother was standing in the driveway with a shotgun. It's was a very sickening feeling knowing I could've died in a different situation. I'm from Vegas and Detroit was nothing like I've ever seen. Even the fast food places have bullet proof glass like a bank. You couldn't rob a place or there if you wanted to.
I've rolled down there in a mini van with country music loud and proud! Its all about confidence and showing these animals they don't scare you. Detroit is a joke

My immigrant parents moved to Detroit in the 70s. Very little English but got plant jobs at GM. The city gave two immigrants a chance, a job and a future. The black community embraced their new neighbor. To this day my dad always talks about his black foreman taking him to their church and parties
Black people have been helping immigrants in this country for over a century. When immigrants would come to America they would be placed in public housing. Once the white folks moved out of public housing it filled with blacks from the south then European and other immigrants came. Blacks showed a lot of them the ropes.
Yeah. I always find it unbelievable that people doing the dirt think that these shows care about you or your safety. They don't do a very good job of hiding faces, vehicles or locations. Also, it's not like government agencies as well as major criminal enterprises don't watch these shows at all. Eventually it gets out.
I'm from that area, left when I was 28, 32 years ago. When I left I was working in Rochester Hills. That was when i realized my Detroit neighbors and friends were top notch. Rochester and rural michigan, the people do not compare to my detroit roots. Today i am a white female who investigates fair housing violations Genesee county. Most of the infractions are race and disability related. I give back and will continue to fight for marginlized people till the day I die. Detroit is where my heart is. ❤
When I was in the military, went to Detroit with my roommate. I was shocked that everything was bulletproof including the fast food restaurants. I had never seen anything like it in the South.
Black people get cold fast and the heat doesn’t effect us like white people. Black people sleep under the covers in summer. White people wear shorts in the winter y’all can clearly with stand cold better and we can with stand heat better.

Tru, but not exactly that simple. I doubt she’s really making 3k a day - she just says she “tries” to make 2-3k a day, that’s probably just what she made on her BEST day. I’d also bet she’s just saying it as a flex or to try and cope with her situation. Upward mobility is way tougher when you’re on the very bottom compared to when you’re somewhere in the middle. Maybe she’s got a felony, which makes it nearly impossible to get any job in the states. Maybe she’s got a drug addiction and can’t access treatment nearby. Those are all just guesses, but they’re not too far from plausibility. Once you’re stuck in her situation, a lot of opportunities to escape the hood go away

I have also lived and worked as a nurse in some of the worst areas of California and I would say the same, I was treated with respect and people were nice to me. There were times while filling gas at night or getting breakfast early morning where I felt danger, but for the most part the people in the city were nice 🤷♀️
Never thought I would see a documentary on this! Crazy but true. Born and raised in Detroit, off 7 Mile right down the street from Osborn High. Tough area is an understatement. The hood breeds 2 types of people: those who never want to leave and those who can’t be stopped from leaving.
Left at 19 for a better life and never looked back. It’s my city and will always be my hometown but you can’t pay me to visit some of my childhood locations.
I could not agree with the two types comment more. I was born and raised and got out of there at 19. I’m glad for the upbringing because it made me who I am. I have gone back to my childhood home and it’s barely a standing structure. My old high-school (Redford) bulldozed and now a grocery store. It’s sad but also gives you gratitude.

As a person who was born and raised in Detroit. It is dangerous but I walked these streets many years. I was a homeless drug addict and stayed in abandoned houses all up and down 7 mile. If you're weak you'll get eaten. I'm clean for 6 years now and don't go that way anymore. Can't believe I survived it.

It was pretty shocking to come across this video. I lived two houses off 7 Mile Rd from 1969-1985 and my childhood was riding bikes, playing outside until the street lights came on, getting Bomb Pops from the ice cream man. How quickly things can change when a city’s people lose opportunity and hope. I pray for Detroit.

We spoke about gang violence and cartel murders, and for the very first time, I really did consider it. My maternal family has been in neighbouring Windsor, Ontario (across the river) since 1952 (from London🇬🇧). I was born in Windsor in 1974, moved in 1977, and have been in British Columbia since 1981. My mother's 4 sisters and their kin all still live in Windsor. I haven't visited since 2004, but it's always amazed me how a mere, 2-3 minute drive between Windsor and Detroit is like ... day and night in terms of safety.
That is wild, i live in south Texas and u can go to the border towns and see the stark difference between America and Mexico 🇲🇽 literally hear machine gun fire 🔥 and stuff.. just steps away from one another yet two different worlds

Just being sober is worth so much to my family, even if I feel terrible, or have a quiet negative attitude or thoughts. During those times, I have to remember what a blessing it is to my family for me to be sober.

I was a truck driver in the late 90s and delivered a load in Detroit. I didn’t know much then about that city. Parked my truck close to my delivery site. At around midnight, I heard gun fires close by. I left the place and came back in the morning
I delivered there about a month ago and had to ask the gas station attendant how close I was to the trouble. I was fine where I parked, but not by much.. a mile in one direction and I was asking for trouble
April of 2016, I delivered to the orange big box builder's supply on 7 Mile road. The original plan was to sleep somewhere enroute, but heavy fog slowed me down so much, that I had to drive straight through to make my delivery appointment. Parked in the lot in front of the place, and a police chase went right past at 3 AM, and somebody was shooting. Did a search online, and discovered that there had been a murder IN THE PARKING LOT where I was parked a month earlier.
When I left, my entrance ramp to I-94 was closed, and I had to reroute. I drove through the neighborhood with burned out and tagged houses for blocks and blocks. White knuckle trip.
Wow. That entire story is pretty nuts. They have some of the worst roads up there too.. pothole city

I was born in Michigan back in 1958 and as a young Man we used to go to wonderful jazz festivals in Detroit.
It really was at one time and exciting City to visit.
My family grew up in Redford. I couldn’t have asked for a better music upbringing.
Detroit used to be a diverse melting pot that had great ethnic festivals. The music, food, and introduction to so many different cultures was wonderful. That's all gone now - has been for a long time. Lots of reasons it happened - none of which are allowed to be spoken of. It's really sad. It's also a big loss. It will never get better.

I was born and raised in Detroit. I lived off 7 mile for 13 years and never had a problem. I worked,and came home. And played basketball all around 7 mile. Grew up of 6 mile and livernois as well. Never had any problems. But its a lot different now.

I grew up in this area in the '50s and '60s. It was like a small town with nice stores, schools, and libraries. We never locked our homes or cars and everyone looked out for each other. We had people from many different countries as well as some Mexican and blacks. Most men worked in factories, in construction, and for the city. The cops were visible day and night and were active in the neighborhood. I remember sitting on the porch in the summer, sometimes until midnight talking with friends and family. When it snowed the men would go out and shovel the walks, streets, and alleys.

I travel a lot. One of the biggest indicators that an area is unsafe is the gas stations. You'll know the feeling when you get out of the car. It's like a 6th sense we all have. I've found this to be true no matter the country. I have never been wrong.

Its because most of the people who participate in these documentaries are actually informants. If they show the face of the informant, someone recognizes them and gets killed, then HOW will they get the information? Do research on informants and how they are protected. Different laws in different states allow certain kinds of protections and that also means being protected during documentaries in which they are basically selling information to remain in the loop.

I’m in Detroit everyday. Seven Mile is definitely rough. Away from Downtown/Midtown the city does get rough. Before Covid I feel the city was going good but the last year especially I’ve seen a big difference in the inner cities. Detroit will get better little by little. The abandoned buildings/blight is a huge issue in the city.
I thought about buying a house or multiple since they’re so cheap. Tidy up the place and try and revive it. Only problem is the crime will be a big deterrent. The government screws everything up, y’all should get Whitmer out of office. 🤘👍

Between the age of 16 to 18 (59 yo now) I use to work one of the local food markets, cart collection, bag boy, stock boy, helped older folks carry out their groceries etc etc to finance my education market location roughly in this area of this doc (7 mile and Conant), not once there was a problem (a serious one anyway), wanna know the secret ? I’ll tell u, treat ppl with respect be it drug dealers , prostitution, drug users, alcoholics, etc in fact if someone looked shady entering the store, the guys with some street respect waited around till the shady guy left . There was a lady head cashier worked same location for 20+ years and acted as asst manager her name was Phyllis, (RIP) everybody respected and treated her like a mother and again without issues as if there was a code of honor being followed . I'm not even gonna lie, I went out there with my buddy to drop off his daughter on the way to Indiana. We were in a brand new 2013 rental caddy and not even 2 minutes after we exited the free way at 2a.m. we were being followed by a 80s box Caprice with 5 guys in it. My boy called his brother and told him and when we pulled in the driveway, his brother was standing in the driveway with a shotgun. It's was a very sickening feeling knowing I could've died in a different situation. I'm from Vegas and Detroit was nothing like I've ever seen. Even the fast food places have bullet proof glass like a bank. You couldn't rob a place or there if you wanted to.

My immigrant parents moved to Detroit in the 70s. Very little English but got plant jobs at GM. The city gave two immigrants a chance, a job and a future. The black community embraced their new neighbor. To this day my dad always talks about his black foreman taking him to their church and parties
Black people have been helping immigrants in this country for over a century. When immigrants would come to America they would be placed in public housing. Once the white folks moved out of public housing it filled with blacks from the south then European and other immigrants came. Blacks showed a lot of them the ropes.

I'm from that area, left when I was 28, 32 years ago. When I left I was working in Rochester Hills. That was when i realized my Detroit neighbors and friends were top notch. Rochester and rural michigan, the people do not compare to my detroit roots. Today i am a white female who investigates fair housing violations Genesee county. Most of the infractions are race and disability related. I give back and will continue to fight for marginlized people till the day I die. Detroit is where my heart is. ❤

When I was in the military, went to Detroit with my roommate. I was shocked that everything was bulletproof including the fast food restaurants. I had never seen anything like it in the South.

Tru, but not exactly that simple. I doubt she’s really making 3k a day - she just says she “tries” to make 2-3k a day, that’s probably just what she made on her BEST day. I’d also bet she’s just saying it as a flex or to try and cope with her situation. Upward mobility is way tougher when you’re on the very bottom compared to when you’re somewhere in the middle. Maybe she’s got a felony, which makes it nearly impossible to get any job in the states. Maybe she’s got a drug addiction and can’t access treatment nearby. Those are all just guesses, but they’re not too far from plausibility. Once you’re stuck in her situation, a lot of opportunities to escape the hood go away
