  • Oh my goodness there are sooooo many cool fish you could have in a Nano aquarium, but because of the size of these small tanks, you are not only limited to the amount of fish your aquarium can hold but also you have to pair the fish to the size of the aquarium.
This video was created to show you some of the best nano reef fish for beginners!
All of the fish mentioned in this video are good down to aquariums of no less than 10 gallons provided you give them lots of sand and live Rock to provide their habitat.
Even picking only 10 fish for this video was a difficult task as there are so many great contenders, but if you want even more information you can view a list of 36 fish for 10 gallon, 20 gallon and 30 gallon nano tanks in this really great article:

whats up with all the damsels? they are way to aggressive for nano tanks, and stress everything out. just because its small, doesn't mean it can fit in a small tank. For a nano reef, the best options are clowns, gobys, blennys, hermit crabs, and shrimp. don't let anyone tell you any different! lol

Such a unique selection of great fish. It might be worth noting the lifespan of neon gobies, it's the only reason I don't keep them.

I had a Talbots that i added very late in my 55 gallon mixed reef and it was the most aggressive fish ive ever owned.
Your mileage may vary. I eventually foumd him on the floor one day ehen i eas cleaning between the tank amd the wall. Ironically he was bullied a bit by my yellow eye kole tang. I figure it was either running from the tang or chasing another fish when it accidentally jumped over the side wall. Ive found most damsels including clownfish have their own unique personalities. Ive had Dominoes that were like piranahs and others like puppy dogs. Yes damsels as a whole are aggressive but not all specimins will fit that steeeotype. I have a yellow tail blue damsel that used to be aggressive as gell but is just chill now. So even time. Setup and tankmates play a huge factor in behavior. Some damsels are gorgeous tank mates

Thanks for the great, informative video. Will you also be doing a video on fish for a larger aquarium?

      Hi Krishna,
Thankyou for your question. The hard part with larger fish for beginners is that there are so many and they all depend on the other fish they will live with and what size aquarium you have. The list is truly endless!
You can have a look at one of my other videos regarding fish to avoid or Awesome fish for beginners video if that helps?
I will certainly add your video to my To Do list and I may make a list of my favourite 10 fish for aquariums over 100 gallons or similar!
      Richard

What size tank would a single yellow belly damsel need?

Can you buy different types of gobies together? Such as neon and clown? Or clown and bumble bee?

  • @stevegee8010

What if you stocked a damsel, last of course, but for whatever reason you needed to add or replace a fish, could you put the damsel in another tank or isolation box for a while then re-introduce it without it attacking the new fish?

    My clown attacks me
When I put my hand in the tank. I don’t see any eggs. Set up nuvo pen 14g about 10 pounds of rock

My clown does the same to me. Clownfish can become quite territorial and there is nothing you can do. Nice tank by the way!!

Neoglyphidodon crossi - not that great for a nano! Juvenile is lovely coloured and small but don't be fooled! Adults turn almost plain black/grey, very stocky and 10cm long. Mine ruled my 50 gallon reef for years!!
