  • In an effort to help you achieve your adventure goals, the Pro-Team at OX execute a Pre-Trip Meeting at our office the night before your climb of the Acatenango volcano.
This video is a summary of that meeting. It is not a replacement. We strongly recommend your attendance at the OX Pre-Trip Meeting.
The Problem with Volcan Acatenango is that it can be very challenging, especially for those with little to no experience with this sort of hiking / camping adventure. The hike begins at the trailhead which is roughly 2400 m / 8,000ft. The summit is 3976 m / 13,044 ft.
Issues such as physical exhaustion, dehydration, altitude sickness, hypothermia and more are some of the problems we strive to avoid due to proper preparation.
This video is meant as supplemental information and review of this meeting. We strongly suggest you attend the meeting so you can ask questions in person to your Professional OX Guide and arrive in the morning prepared.
For those of you who have missed our Pre-Trip Meeting, please reference this video to help you in your preparation and be sure to arrive early at our office so that you can meet your guide and get any additional gear and information you might need for the trek up the volcano.
We go above and beyond to ensure your overall experience is the best it can be for this once in a lifetime climb.
Please help us help you by attending this meeting.

Nice video I’ve done this volcano multiple times. Would be nice if you could do a video of the new route to Water Volcano from Ciudad Vieja! Personally the must challenge route in the area. About 4 miles 20% incline

We are not currently doing tours of Volcan Agua, however that could change in the future. If we cross that line, then a video will most definitely ensue. Thank you for your helpful suggestion.

Thanks for the suggestion. Great idea!! We do not yet do the Agua Volcano. Currently Acatenango and Fuego are where the fireworks are but we are hopeful for the future.

I had a question regarding Leave No Trace and bathroom necessities. Is this a pooptube situation or a cathole situation?

Yes, Tyler is a character, we love when here joins our team for guide work. Professional to the core and a wee bit funny as well. 😅

    Does Victor still work there?

Victor the local guide from La Soledad? Yes, and he has joined our community "English Classes" where we help the locals of La Soledad learn English so they can better take advantage of tourism here in Guatemala.

That’s nice. What about Victor the founder?

I asked one of the owners from Guatemala and he said that yes, the founder is still listed on the website but has not been involved since 2015, time for an update I guess 😅. I've worked in social media and customer service for two years and have never met him. idk! He started OX but sold it I guess. There are several owners now but not the founder, he moved his primary residence to Canada or something. @@gossome

Why don't you hire local guides from nearby villages? A lot of your tours are run by out of country people that do it in return for accommodations...Why not give back to the community by employing local and paying a living wage?

That is not true. Most of the guides are actually Guatemalan, I've met most of them.

Thanks so much for the suggestion, however you might have us confused with another company. Since 2004 we have supported the local communities with employment opportunities and even tourism development and English classes. 🙂
As for "a living wage," OX Expeditions is the highest paying guide company doing adventure tours on the volcanoes. This is because we demand professionalism and constant training in an effort to create the BEST overall experience for all of our clients. We would guess that you have never been on tour with us since the confusion. Honest mistake. 🙂
There are a lot of logistics involved in executing the most professional volcano tours here, so we do it with a lot of help from all our teams. The Lead guides, assistant guides and local guides are just part of the equation. There is also the customer service team, hospitality / food service, transport services, porters and our management team. 🌋
As for work in exchange for accommodations, this is not our platform. We work hard to maintain the status and reputation of being the most professional guide service in Guatemala. We can not do this with volunteers. Maybe you are thinking of Quetzal Trekkers based out of Quetzaltenango.
Thanks for the opportunity to set the record straight, with you at least.
