    I’ve only played WGT? 2.0, but i have had 5 plays of it. When teaching, I’ve found it essential to tell every player that it’s a survival game first and foremost. If we all die, it doesn’t matter what happens at the end.
    The last game I played was probably the worst one. It was a 5p game and we played with a young player who revealed himself as the Thing so it felt like it spoiled the mood. It came down to me and my wife (who had no vulnerable cards), but she was dying of frostbite and I couldn’t save her. On the helicopter, it turned out she became infected in the earliest sleep round but she played it straight the whole time. I ended up winning bc only my helicopter points were needed. It dragged while playing, but the end was so exciting it redeemed it totally. I’m prepping to teach it tonight. You’re spot on that players will need to be into it.

      This is an excellent comment. Makes me want to play with the new adjustments. Totally agree with survival first which is what makes finding the thing so hard. The nuances of this game are tough for the really casual game player to get. The right group and this game is at its best but that is also the hard part … I rarely have that group sitting around the table wanting to play a game.

    Quality content with entertaining hosts! I’m not typically a board game person but I feel myself slowly becoming one…

      I’m the same way. At first it was just research for camp then I played a few that were genuinely fun. Once I got past the fact that there were more games than uno, Dutch blitz, monopoly, and Catan I realized there was a game for every group and every mood. Now it’s fun to discover new games.

    This is an excellent semi-co-op survival and social deduction game. I've never had it fail with the various groups I've played it with. It does run long, and it does require investment from all players, but it excels in theme, difficult decisions and player interaction. The updated 2.0 version improves on a few things like player elimination, navigating lockdowns and a much improved rule book.

      Well said! Dad just got the 2.0 version but we haven’t busted it out yet. Waiting for our annual play through

      The new box and trays are great. Everything fits. I think I could hide my fireproof safe in the old box.

      Yeah, my version arrived a while ago (even with the crazy box sleeve), probably because I was on the first shipping container. I put it in storage unopened, because my game groups are not back up to the size for this game (and when it is, they want simple, short party or social deduction games). It's going to be like Xmas opening this and punching it out later in the year. Hopefully play will be equally fun.
      I heard they clarified the helicopter part of the game among other changes (instant death).

    Really love this review! quick question, have you played with 3 players? If so was it any good? I have a hard time imagining how to sleep phase would go...

    • @The-Game-Garage
      @The-Game-Garage  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Never played 3. We mostly like playing with as full a group as we can. Now that you mention it though…three would make for quite the game. The Thing would have to be extremely subtle. With fewer players it’s much harder to disguise actions and get away with stuff. Sleep phase would cause for a regular argument 😂

      I haven’t played 3 either. I’ve played 4, 5, and 6. Six was fun but felt like too many. I don’t think I would want to play 3 … but I am intrigued … my gut says stick with 4 or 5

    I really dislike this game. It is deeply deeply flawed. Watch Dias Ex Machina's review on it.

      @@The-Game-Garage Let's seee...where to begin? Is it the games overt randomness or how much of a pretzel job the testing mechanic is or how much easier the game is based on what characters are chosen? However, at the end of the day, the paranoia mechanic and the helicopter phase is broken. The thing player doesn't need to do anything to raise suspicion and for some reason if there are no human players on the helicopter at the end, everyone loses, the latter being a necessary contrivance to prevent a simple solution to every game (just let everyone be taken). The designers kept twisting their game to make an idea work and didn't realize that it broke their game. Certifiable make good looking games but I have played three of them now, and they are all badly designed. And I was foolish enough to back the second edition, which proved everything I was worried about, but then they didn't do enough to fix the game. They acknowledged what was wrong, then did half measures to fix it, meaning the underlying problems are still there!

    • @DeadGoldfishProd
      @DeadGoldfishProd 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I like that you have specifics for your dislike. I wish we could talk about it in person. I think we would enjoy talking with you. I will agree that the helicopter phase is broke. A quick look at the version 2 rule book concerned me but I haven’t played that yet. The game needs a end game phase that pushes you into making a decision about who is infected. Most of my issue with social deduction games is that if you are the good guy all you have to do is look for the bad guy and wait for him to do something that logically flushes him out. In this game there is not that obvious flush out … in some ways the opposite. I like Secret Hitler for its balance between both teams. I like Fake artist goes to New York because multiple play rounds evolve the strategy of how to hide and how to flush out. I enjoy the survival effort of who goes there but I can see the frustration of how the game ends. The sheer passion for or against this game is a curious thing. Have you ever installed house rules to make the end better. I haven’t thought about it but I would welcome someones effort to rewrite the end game but still use the core game. Thanks for your thoughts!

      @@DeadGoldfishProd Well, there are THREE Thing board games, two official, one not. The two official ones feel very similar to one another. They ALL end with a helicopter phase. The one big difference is that Who Goes There wanted to endorse the idea of players infecting other players but couldn't figure out a way to make that work. In my review, I make the case that there is one really good Thing board game, but it involves taking Who Goes There and adding in the better rules from the other two games. Adding more teamwork, remove player elimination entirely, and even include a variant where two people can play the game.

      Hey Dias Ex Machina, I watched your review last night in its entirety I loved your home brew suggestions and I like the idea of sharing possible ways to make it better. Early player elimination is a bummer if I’m playing games to enjoy the relationships of the people around the table. It is a necessary mechanic for something like March Madness. I agree at my table I don’t want to lose anybody. On the blood test I had a different experience. How to use it became the defining discussion and the critical mistake I made that cost me the win. I enjoyed the rarity of it and the way that it forced a discussion about infection in the midst of surviving.
      I was not familiar with the other games based on the thing but your review was thorough and well thought out. You made me think which I enjoy. Today my team was working on a game for a camp and I referenced your disdain for player elimination and we changed our game for the better. Thx!!
