That’s great … We just got the new Windward and I transferred everything to the new box. Bodie looked over the rule book and it all looks very encouraging. We have not yet played with the new stuff but we are excited about the progress that seems to be happening!! Thanks for the info!
I really don't want to nitpick, but the trading post in the middle of the board is upside down. The orange gas tanks of the station are facing the planet, and the towers are facing the sky.
That’s great! Another thing that we got wrong with this game. It is our nemesis when it comes to correct play. I appreciate the nitpick and you have no idea how much it made me laugh. good catch!! I’ll bet you notice movie discontinuity as well.
You’ll love the expansion. Those rocky spots (drift) now have goodies to scavenge for. The black market and events also really help flesh things out quite a bit.
I just found your channel and I really like your content and all the effort and positivity your are bringing to your hobby. The idea with the table alone is gold - but you two are just likable and cool ;) good work - keep on doing awesome videos
Thank you for the video, guys! This was one of my first hobby games beyond Ticket to Ride and Pandemic, and it's such a bad choice for beginners in the hobby, because of the rulebook. Like after this, my tolerance for unclear rules was a bit burnt out. I think the game is a lot of fun, I agree, but that waste of time spent on figuring out how you end your turn (limited actions of crew mates), for example, it's a big unnecessary access wall to that fun. I bought the version that had the White Crester and some variants, but it came with a duplicated player board instead of the 5th player's board. I emailed and DM'ed them as a new fan, like I'll buy it, but no response. This is a super awesome hobby and hopefully newcomers are not put off by these types of mishaps. Great channel! Happy gaming!
I understand what you are talking about. Sometimes the sandbox is so undefined it is hard to know where to begin or stop. It’s kinda better as a game you play after you are used to several types of game mechanics. Thankfully I have learned a lot of games from others who knew the answers without looking it up in the rule book. Thanks for your comments!
This would be a hard game to play for a beginner! I’m impressed you didn’t give up on the hobby all together. Hope you’ve had or will have better experiences in the future. So many great games out there!
@@The-Game-Garage Oh, no! I'm so in. I can't wait to play CO2 or On Mars, next on my wishlist, and Le Havre is one of my favorites. In any case, it gives me an itch on what it's possible that can be improved with such cool ideas and productions. It's just that like many of us, I just want to make it easier for more people to join us, besides making it easier for us to start playing the game, lol. But yeah, I see it at Barnes and Noble and I wonder how many others went through that impression as a beginner, because it's not labeled as intermediate, advanced or anything. Maybe that's something we might see in the future, but still, some games like this have a rulebook of advanced difficulty, but a game play of no more than medium difficulty, so that might be a bit tricky. Hopefully, I'm confident the hobby will continue to grow and we will see more people accessing the same fun we enjoy!
I was able to have success in teaching this to a beginner, but it was due to two main factors: 1) I knew these rules REALLY well. I spent a lot of time reading both rule books, the original and the updated one on BGG. I also went through the forums with a fine toothed comb where the designer, Daniel Aronson, answers a LOT of questions not added into the first rulebook. (LOL bc you guys described him as "some guy" at th-cam.com/video/tBsc7zy5yRc/w-d-xo.html and he's the legit designer hahaha) 2) I house-ruled a few things to make the game a little easier for their first play through. Game was over in about 45 min, which the beginner enjoyed. I suggest adapting a few house-rules of your own based on the person you are trying to teach and their tolerances/personality. All in all, this game easily became a staple in my collection and is there to stay.
Winward is a great game!!! My friend got it on sale for $4, and it was great. The rule book is very hard to manage and poorly written though, but once you get the hang of it, its a gem of a game once you figure out how to play. I do agree that it is very hard to learn hot to play correctly.
hahah, I just saw the part where you also talked about the rule book that is so bad. for instance, our first game we were using gas AND the mates to buy things in port. Which really became an issue if you ever ran out of cards.
Pronounced "Air-o-generator" I think, haha. Super looking forward to this game KS getting fullfilled, but not the rulebook. Will have to check out the new rulebook
Thanks! We should probably look these things up before talking about them...but then we wouldn't meet kind people like you :) My friend is still waiting on the new edition to arrive. Crossing our fingers, hoping for a better rule book too!
Ahhhh … a person who notices the details … and the details are important in this game … of course we played a game or two minus a couple of important details but we finally got it figured out! Thanks for the comment!
Hey Mark, I appreciate the multiple comments. I think your comment is part of what makes board games fun. Sometimes I am surprised by what I like and don’t like.
Hi guys. Okay, now you’ve got me taking a second look at this game. My son and I play most of our games together, and sometimes I can get a daughter to join in. I know my wife won’t play this one :) If I can only get my son to play, will it be worth it? Have you ever played just with two people? Thanks so much!
I've played with two players once, and it's ok as a two player game, but I think you need at least one other player for this game to really shine. Politics, power perception management, racing for achievements, risk/reward decisions benefit from a higher player count. Personally, I enjoy the core gameplay loop (movement puzzle, ship upgrades, whale hunting) enough to get this game even if I could only play it as a two player game. It becomes more of a puzzle game with two players. Again I've only played it as a two player game once so these are just my first impressions. What kind of games do you and your son enjoy the most?
@@The-Game-Garage Thanks for the response. We might give it a try. As far as the games Gentry and I enjoy as two player games: we love Too Many Bones, Unmatched, and Dice Thrones. We also really enjoy Galaxy Trucker, Everdell, and Epic Mechs. We play a number of other games but these are the ones we often come back to again and again.
Going out on a limb here … Bodie and I both enjoy Grimm by Park and Parade. Simple fun game … just a few bucks but only from thier website. We like Regicide for two or three … we reviewed that one … Memoir 44 is a great two player. A new one I’ve played several time now is Furnace … great bidding mechanic and an old favorite is point salad for a light game and Isle of Skye
@@DeadGoldfishProd Thanks for all the suggestions Sam. I’ll definitely look into them. We have idle if Skye and your Regicide review convinced me to buy it but it is out of stock from the site you recommended. Do you know anyone else who might carry it. Or do you know where a print and play version could be found? I thought of trying it just with a 52 card deck, but theme and ambience are such a big part of the experience for me, I really want to give the game it’s best chance with us :) Thanks again!! Hope you guys have a super blessed weekend.
I talked with the one of the guys who helps put out the game and they got slammed when they became popular on BGG. I don’t know how long they will be out of print but thankfully it is only cards … I’ll bet they will be back sooner than some. I applaud giving the game the best shot possible. The first couple play throughs can be hard.
"...I broke my ship." Haha! You guys crack me up. The game seems interesting, but it's always tough to dive into something new without a good rules explanation. I noticed the 2nd edition of the rules on the games BGG page inserted some pictures into the walls of text you commented on. Just wondered if this updated rulebook from designer Daniel Aronson helps at all?
I look forward to seeing that edition. I decided I would just wait till the new box showed up but so far still waiting. May have to look that up on BGG

the rules are a mess, the archivements can be completed by everybody but the ones that have 2 spaces just the first person get the big number and the rest get get the smaller number
The achievements would be the easiest way to improve the game. Several ways are possible to help them out but I do agree that the disparity between 1st and 3rd is massive for something that everyone can do but it just depends who did it first. Good point.
This reminds me of the trailer "The Leviathan -- Teaser" on TH-cam. Don't know if you've ever seen it, but that's what this looks like. (th-cam.com/video/s-45NTlgp-o/w-d-xo.html) Interesting to see what looks like a game made from this or maybe it's just the same idea... dunno. 😎
Just watched the teaser and yes the trailer looks like it could be the Kickstarter opening video … even down to the concept of main ship and longboat use. The crestors look identical on the box and in trailer. On another note I enjoyed looking at your channel. I was inspired by your dice tower build. Makes me want to go build something in the garage.
@@DeadGoldfishProd Glad you enjoyed it. I'm actually building another one using more complex woodwork. And it's about 4x as large, so it can hold more dice, minis, pencils etc. LOL. Of course I'll make a video, but I doubt I'll finish before Dec. It takes quite a while to do all the woodwork, video, editing, etc. Sigh. But I'm having fun.
