We can’t pretend that prescription drug abuse is uncommon among teenagers; it’s actually one of the easiest ways for young people to get their hands on potent narcotics. As members of the straight edge community, it’s easy to draw a strong line against prescription drug abuse; Drug Free means no prescription drug abuse. But what happens when your doctor diagnoses you with ADD? Or ADHD? Or anxiety, depression, even schizophrenia? Then suddenly the same drugs that your friends might be using to get high, well now you have more pills than your local dealer.
But you’re drug free, right? I mean you’re Straight Edge, and Straight Edge means no drugs. Especially not the same Ritalin, Xanax, or Oxycodone pills your friends might be dosing on the weekends. What do you do? Who do you talk to? What if it’s medical marijuana?
Dark Sermon frontman Johnny Crowder was in town the other day, and we sat down to talk about his experiences reconciling his diagnosed mental illnesses with being a member of the straight edge community. I have been 5 years straight edge. Recently i got diagnosed adhd. It sound stupid and someone would say that i am not straight edge, but i would not have my job and many many other things without my stimulant medication.

I have schizophrenia too and feel like I'm not being tru to my pledge. I'm forced too get a needle and if I don't go they call the cops. I dont like drugs, don't even want to take ibuprofen, I don't. I hate drugs. I don't smoke, drink, or do drugs. Thanks for saying this.

I've been sXe for 35 years, and on psychiatric meds for about 25. Whether I'm technically sXe isn't a big deal. I've got my life straight.
