I got my dung beetle pen above my incubating room, 2 walls high and quite wide, none of them have managed to escape yet either in a couple of weeks

Cages against a wall were working fine until one day my best beetle glitched underground and died.
I was able to whistle follow but it would not follow.
Cage was against a wall, on a stone foundation right above the water table so i guess it drowned.
Will try a pit i guess.

I put my beetle on the foundation of my greenhouse then built the walls/roof and doorway around it and it's trapped inside the greenhouse then
+danqrl Sometimes it will bug and the Beetle will drop down into the foundation
if the beetles glitch under foundations you can still whistle them out, but keeping the building unrendered for longer periods of time increases the chance of them escaping. the likelyhood is lower if you are always active and keeping them encumbered, so they can't move around much, plus if they are in a small space they move around less even on wander

If you have access to the whip, you can whip them into the cages rather than punch them.

Incorrect. Encumbering them will not prevent them from glitching through foundations/ceilings/walls.
The reason this happens is because when no player is in render distance of a base, it despawns. So dinos set to wander will then have no foundation or structure to wander on and "fall" down to the ground level. Then when a player gets within render distance of the base, it renders back in and the dinos are "stuck" underneath.
This is why I never leave tames on wander when logged off or traveling outside my base's render distance UNLESS they are already on the ground level, which is why Steve's pen is built the way it is.
Also, encumbering wandering dinos when breeding was patched out ages ago. I can't remember if it was just for breeding or wandering in general, though.
komodo playz why not just disable wandering? You would think thhat would be the logical way to stop them from escaping
Nathan J they have to be on wander to make fertilizer and if they are encumbered they also won't make fertilizer

it was explaned to me, the game loades animals before buildings so they arnt actually escape artists, for a second or 2 theres actually nothing there.i was thinking point weight and give a load of rock with their poop keep em form walking while they wandering....Great vid as usual....thanks Steve
Dem beetles need a specific video to stop dem from escaping
I tried the building, worked well as expected but I haven't tried the cage method.
If the beetles get in the way you could pick em up and throw em away :P
I just either encumber mine or put them in a 1x2 house

My beetles stop wandering in this ... they dont like when i close on them
How many bases have you built?
I tried this but kept getting the beetles glitched in under the foundation, so had to demolish to get them out. This happened several times within a few days..
This is why Steve had them on the ground with foundations around them. He mentions that exact thing in the video. :/
Nice setups! Will probably go with the cage idea. One of my two dung beetles died today, fell through the ground... If I would have seen this video earlier poop eater 69 would still be with us. ;_;

I've built a 4×4×4 stone dino pen, where I put the beetles and some other dino's. Should I be concerned about the beetles escaping? :/

Before you most likely couldn't pick them up but after an update they add the ability to pick them most likely when they made them Passive Creatures from Aggersive

Cages no longer work! One of mine glitched through the cage and the metal wall behind...
Can you not pick the Dung beetle up now? ... and Steve could you do another video for the dung beetle post patch since now you can't fly birds into the caves

okay so i could go in a cave with a land mount kill the creepy crawlies with it tame the beetle(s) bring it(them) out build a cage or little hut ride home get my Argentavis fly back and retrieve them... IF i have to do it solo... Can't wait to get play again
Just use a Sabertooth(or even a small pack of direwolves) while dung beetle hunting in caves. They're tough enough to kill the creepy crawlies and are excellent at harvesting chitin from those that drop it.
Once the cave is clear, tame your beetle, pick it up, and ride home.
I really love the look of the foundations-based design, but I live on a hill. Is there a way to adapt it to work on a hill that interferes with foundation placement?
Sidenote: Don't you wish Foundations would extend their height to a maximum of, like, 3 or 4 foundation heights, so they were slightly slope-proof? The whole point of a foundation in real life is to do that job.
Very late, but maybe others will see and be helped.
You're only option would be to use the pillar/ceiling/wall method to build "foundations." Beetles have a tendency to glitch through walls though, so this might not be viable. If not, I guess you'd have to do the cage method as Steve showed in the video.
Also, Structures+ mod allows you to stack foundations. Not sure why WC has never implemented this into ARK. As you said, it's quite dumb not to be able to stack at least a couple foundations on top of each other. The building mechanics in ARK are literally some of the worst in existence. I wish they'd get that worked out and perfected instead of reworking dinos with all these TLC patches. I mean, it's a base building game ffs. Embarrassing how wonky those mechanics are.

Not sure what you're referring to by "multiple foundation." If you mean to stack them, then no. Foundations cannot be stacked in vanilla ark.
They can however be raised or lowered by using the pillar method which if done correctly allows you to layer foundations, walls, ceilings. So, maybe you are referring to that?
If so, then no that won't make a difference either. The reason tames glitch and get stuck when on wander is, that when nobody is within render distance of a structure it renders out. When someone comes into render distance of a base, the dinos render back in first rather than the structures and then sometimes are "stuck" inside or under the foundation, or glitch through to the other side of the wall before it renders. So, layering foundations, walls, ceilings really makes no difference due to the fact they still render out when nobody is there, and render back in after the dinos when somebody comes back.

been 2 weeks ingame my poop filled beetles havent done anything on verge on executing them lol is it cause its on a 1x1x1 thatch building maybe?

I will say though that I just can't seem to get a ladder into the beetles pen, from the pen to the hatchframe, no problems from the opposite side on the foundation. Any suggestions?
Did you try cycling the snap points of the ladder with the Q and/or E keys? Ladders can be finicky sometimes due to WC's janky build mechanics.

Fences have two structures: Fence foundations and Fence railings. Additional fence railings can be stacked on top of each other just like walls. If they are tricky and dont want to snap, cycle them with the Q key.
Using metal building materials im seeming to have issues getting the large crop plots into the small corners

ok done that i caged him but don't they pick up eggs for you when your dino have layed them
well if you have a wall around your base so it cannot escape you can let him run free :P
will he pick up the eggs for me so i just go and get them off him latter on

Madcap Magician it's finicky.. I put my ladder first before my rail. Play around with it until it decides it wants to place.
