- Dazed and Confused is one of Led Zeppelin's live showcases in concert, and the 1973 Madison Square Garden performance is one of their best. This is Dev's first time hearing this performance! Our reaction includes scenes from The Song Remains the Same film.
Mike hasn't seen this in a LONG time, and Dev has never heard it ever. We are re-experiencing them, an album at a time, with fresh perspectives and active ears, so that Dev can learn and appreciate more about Zeppelin, and so that Mike can relive his childhood.

Agreed, Paige was and still is the best. I was there July 28th 1973. Flew up from Dallas. A Marine brother called and told me he had tickets. I got there and found out his girl had me set up with her cousin. It was a great 4 days in NYC. By the way we are still together.

Grew up with this album and it is still my favorite stuff. I like to point people to White Summer from the Albert Hall concert.
This absolutely proves that Zeppelin is the greatest band off all time. Someone may "prefer" another band, but there is not a band that can come close to what they did live.

Yes, this was filmed on July 28th 1973. A friend from the Marines secured 4 tickets for that night. He called me in Dallas and I flew to NYC that Thursday. Stayed with him in a small apartment with his Ole Lady. Her cousin showed up Saturday and we hung out. The concert was fantastic and so was her cousin. 6 mths later she flew down to Dallas and we are still married today. 49 years and going strong.

Don’t want to be a Zeppelin nerd but this song is actually a combination of the 3 nights in 73’, July 27, 28, & 29th. Majority is from the 27th, with some fillers from the 28th & 29th. To make matters even more complicated, some of this footage is also from a year later in 74’ at Shepperton Studios when they re-created the whole concert to add to some of the missing visuals.
It's the 27th. Some of the footage is from the 28th and 29th. 98% of the audio and footage is from the 27th. Audio from 8:36-10:19 is from the 29th with vocals from 27th over it. Footage from 8:38-10:21 is from 29th. You can see JPJ wearing the 29th shirt in that time frame and a white shirt outside that time frame that is from the 27th. I believe the audio also has some small patches from the 28th.
@@UlyssesM You forgot to mention the Shepperton footage. You can always tell the 74’ footage from 73’, since Plant had gotten his teeth fixed and didn’t have a missing tooth like he did in 73’.
@@julrob97 I've never heard about the Sheppeton footage honestly. I'll have to look into it. I get curious about things like these. When I first learned that this wasn't the raw audio from the 27th I was a bit disappointed but I've obsessively listened to the raw audio from the 27th and it's pretty much exactly the same besides a few patches that are hard to tell unless you point them out and the obvious San Francisco intro from the 29th.
Jimmy Page & Jimi Hendrix all on a level by themselves. John Bonham all alone by himself.

I'm so glad your reacting to this. All the zepp haters make me laugh. I hope they get a look at this and try and tell me a band that can do this right now. Although I'm just so so taken with them since I've been 13 now 63 still can't get enough. Great job.
Mesmerized since I was 12 and now I'm 55! People don't understand what a phenomenal jam band Zeppelin was live - these extended jams as part of songs like Dazed and Confused and No Quarter are just phenomenal, never the same song twice at any show, and always shows a great connection between all musicians to free flow and stay connected with each other.....

It literally does not get any better than this. After 18 months of constant touring this performance was at the end of 3 nights at MSG and they delivered something amazing.
Was at this show as a teenager and when Jimmy pulled out the bow it blew my mind...got to meet him a few times and chatted with him about this concert among other things and he was utterly elated about shows at MSG and just playing in NYC...the GOAT

Dazed and Confused, No Quarter, Stairway to Heaven and Since I've Been Loving You from this concert are out of this world. Time machine needed to see that gig.
I'm 62 years old and was fortunate to see Zep 3 times. I can tell you that they have never played any of their songs the same way twice in a live performance. It's the same but Jimmy switches up the guitar licks every time.
Zeppelin were one of the few bands that painted a picture with their music.
Jimmy Page is the wizard! He takes off into the stratosphere and stays there for awhile before he comes back down! Jimmy plays with feel and becomes one with the guitar that's what makes him a master!
I can remember the first time I saw this movie...The Song Remains the Same.....blown away doesn't begin to describe how we all felt.
I know Jimmy's playing was quite good on this track but the rhythm section deserves a little love too. I mean they pushed that tempo during the instrumental part to warp speed and never missed a note. Truly amazing group.

I saw them earlier in 73 here in the UK. They are still the greatest band ever for me.
I remember Robert Plant once reflecting on his time at Led Zeppelin saying there were sometimes long instrumental periods periods with no singing which is why he sometimes filled in with impromptu vocalisations. I feel this may be one performance that he had in mind.

I saw this movie when it came out. I was just a kid but so mesmerized by it. Zeppelin is still the greatest band ever. What a finish.

Jimi Hendrix had his pedals Pete Townsend had his windmills, David Gilmour was developing his sound and Jimmy Page unleashed his talents on all of us around the band's peak here in 1973. IMO, Jimmy really doesn't rely on pedals to bend the sound. Sure, he had his bow and theremin but when he primarily goes into solo mode, he is using JUST his guitar and string bends to create his unique sound. Watch how quickly he adjusts the knobs and switches on his Les Paul, amazing, during this period, no doubt he was the hardest working guitar player and EARNING it. It is no wonder HIS playing started influencing lead guitar stylings of MANY to "Solo guitaring" back then. Even a young Eddie Van Halen was heavily influenced by Jimmy at this time and Many more! I am glad to see others get to see him at work for he easily my favorite of ALL time.
Best guitarist for me. Heavily blues and rock influneced. He has also had a huge influence on metal and thrash metal. Dave Mustaine from Megadeth also one of my favourite guitarists and also Dimebag Darell from Pantera adored Jimmy Page.

73 here in 2023 and I am so glad I was in my early 20s when these Rock Gods hit the scene.I was there, 1975 Long Beach Arena kiddies..Awwsome.Smoked cigs with Pagey in 1966 when he took a break with the Yardbirds..but..that is another story. Peace.

July 29, 1973 and I was 15 years old... the only DOWNSIDE of being alive then is that I'm 65 now!.... Ugh... but you know what, I saw them five times from '72 to '77, I wouldnt trade it for the world!!!

I think the part @27:10 is some of the hardest, most intriguing improvisations ever recorded. How it morphs into a frenzy is incredible. The ending @30:00 is one of the greatest moments in rock.
It’s was a take on Holst’s Mars:Bringer of War. In earlier live versions Jimmy played the piece straight (which I preferred). In later versions he changed the tempo up (like here).

The only band ever that made me want to learn to sing and play the keyboard, bass, drums and guitar with a violin bow. And I've done all five!.... with varying degrees of skill 😄

for me that whole san fransisco parts is some of the best music ever recorded, it BREATHS and you can really feel how in synch they all are, its pure improv!!!

Yes sir I was at all those shows for summer saw them was 1970 Fillmore East New York City New York I got grounded for like 3 months well worth it
I saw them on this tour and as mentioned previously these shows were 3 hours without a break. The solos like Jimmy's allowed other band members to go off stage and take a break. It was amazing how each in turn could command the whole stage on their own as well as a band.
It is important to point out that most rock bands had 2 guitarists: a rhythm guitar and a lead guitar. Those who only had one would borrow a guitarist during live performances. This doesn't happen with LZ, where Page does everything himself. And for a performance like this, it's almost unbelievable.
You listen to these guys live like that and there’s literally zero bands that come close to this then or now.

I saw this movie in the the theater in 1976. I literally left the theater with my mouth open. In complete awe.
the real magic of this four piece is that fact that they're all so good and have intuition withing the framework which gives them the ability to freely extend their soloing abilities. That is why this is one of the greatest improvises songs ever filmed.
The time machine is TH-cam. Just enjoy and be as present to the experience as possible. The 70s were, indeed, an amazing time to be a teenager and young man. The thing for me is that I enjoy the music more now because I'm older and have come to realize how important LZ is and will always be. The music, as the soul it contains, is timeless. Enjoy a timeless few moments just bathing in their soothing waters. Lol. Bless you both.

Bonzo's wild roll at the end was cool.
I bought this movie in 1983 when VHS just about started. My VCR cost $400 back then. The video cassette cost $100.

The original running time of Dazed and Confused on the album was a shade over 26 minutes. It was reissued a few years ago and the run time increased to 29 minutes. Which still about 10-15 minutes short of the longest version captured on tape (1975}
That's one concert, in hindsight, I wish I had attended. I'm an 60 minute train ride to Penn Station in NYC across from the Garden.
First off I was 14 at the time, the parents would never let me go. Second, back then you really had to keep our eyes and ears open to when a show was as no internet or social media existed.
I have been to a couple shows at MSG, Queen in the early eighties.
Right with you in that I lived in jersey maybe 40 min fron NYC but me to only 13. My dad wouldn't let me go. But when I was 17 he pretty much gave in to all concerts and let me b me with the help from mom. Lol great times
I can recall racing to the theater to see this when it was first released. It was my first look at the gods of rock performing "live". Needless to say, my young mind was blown. Looking at it now, fifty years later, my old mind is blown. In their prime, no other band could touch Led Zeppelin. (I hope you'll cover Heart's tribute cover of "Stairway to Heaven" at the Kennedy Center more than a decade ago. It is stunning.)

Fabulous performance, this. When Page gets in the zone, it's something to behold. What a journey he takes us on. Imagine that Dazed and Confused was only one of 15 songs in the set list! Imo, no other rock band could touch the magic of these four guys.

Hi ... I was at that concert & at the show when they were filming T.S.R.T.S
Sitting in the 9th row orchestra center the camera guys were all over the stage , laying on there backs , standing along slide of them . I didn't know what was going on but new it was going to be big .
ZEP played close too 4hrs . I was 16 years old then now I'm 66 & still on my Led Zepplin journey . I glad that you guys are enjoying your Zep journey . Zepplin the greatest band ever !!! I should now I was there & experience them Live . When Zep came to MSG I was there . Take care Mike
Dad took me to see the movie when it came out in 1976. The bow string play was just impressive then as it is now. The theater went all out with the sound system. Was Awesome.

If you're new to Zep, this is certainly not the song I'd send people to, but after some exposure to their music, this is the perfect song to show why this is the greatest band ever to rock 'n' roll.
Great Editing! In 1973 the three shows they did at MSG were edited into the 1976 release of "The Song Remains the Same" LIVE. In 1980, when we started getting into Zep, a brother of a friend got the 4-ticket limit at the Chicago Stadium, for what would turn out be the passing of John. I was a freshman in High School and had no connections yet, but we were all vying to get one of the four tickets. By that time, we had listened to this ALBUM hundreds of times before sometime around 1981-82, they had multiple weeks midnight viewings of this monster, of a movie in Schaumburg, Illinois. we would go MANY times. The movie version of "Dazed and Confused" was a mixture of a couple different versions, from all three shows of the audio and the video feed was heavily edited, for the best sound. Unfortunately, even with your great edits, it had already been hacked and slashed before its release. Am I complaining, NO! The final product was over 2 hours of raw Zep!! Today with TH-cam there are so many different versions of solo's where you can easily spot the edit points. You managed to play the best version, of the audio, for sure! Thanks, Subscription added! What happened at 29:07, is that despite using multiple movie cameras to capture the performance, there were several spots in the concert where all the cameras had run out of film, but there was no communication between the operators.. The result is gaps in the movie, before any of the cameras were reloaded with fresh film. Here, and in other songs, the fill the gaps with stills. I read in an interview with Page that the decision to create the four interstitial films was made only after this after the problem was discovered and gaps were too long to fill with still images.

Keith Richards said he didn't like Zeppelin because they made concerts long so they had to follow suit.
Zeppelin outsold the Stones in tickets sales 3 to 1 in 1972.They outsold every one as they broke box office records.Their concerts sold out in a couple of hours.Amazing considering it was decades before the net.
Serious question....this whole album was ingrained in my brain long long ago and I feel like bits and pieces here and there are different than what my brain knows by heart. Does anyone else hear it? Has it been altered slightly since the original? Not much,mind you...but it feels like it to me. 🤷
If you're talking about the 1976 soundtrack album, yes it has been edited differently in several places. For example, this D&C is longer than what could fit on an album side back then. The section near the beginning, if you're going to San Francisco has some of the greatest guitar playing ever as far as I'm concerned.

Friday nights at the Roxy Theatre was a ritual for about 2 years. Jimi Hendrix Documentary opener and The Song Remains The Same main event. Wow 40 years have gone by so quickly.

We are incredibly lucky that quality of equipment improved tremendously between the time the Beatles quit touring cause the screaming fans drowned out the music and they couldn’t hear themselves play!!!

Y'know, i havent seen this on any other reaction channel--SUBTITLES for y'all's comments (and thoughts, it seems)! Brilliant, actually. I THINK. LOL, it CAN be distracting when u hear comments, tho it's also cool to. Of course SOME reactors talk ALL thru the song and it's like , um, are u listening to it? others stay quiet all thru, out of respect or bc nothing to say! Anyhow, it's working pretty well so far, of course i know some of y'all's words CAN be heard, so a good balance. Great reaction to a Classic Version!
