With Zeppelin, I believe it's best to listen to the studio version first, especially this song. I'd encourage you to watch the live version someday soon. That said, Led Zeppelin was and always will be my favorite band. Your reaction was fun to watch!

I saw Led Zeppelin perform this live in concert in 1969 and 1970. They were electrifying in person.
In 2005, an American radio station asked who was the best guitarist, singer, bass player, and drummer. They took 3,500 responses. At the end, they built Led Zeppelin. Been a Zep fan since I first heard them (got to see them live) and I've never heard of this other person. There is a difference between being "inspired by" and "ripping off" and popular acts forever have to deal with "wanna bes".

The "middle thing" was kick ass psycedelic soundscape. Brilliant music! The many transitions are seamless.
The other guy that used a bow, just sawed at it, Page gets some amassing notes out of it. When Page was a sessions musician, a violin player had asked if he ever tried using a bow. These 4 music geniuses were only together about 2 months when they recorded this album. Page who founded the band also paid to to have it made. He produced mixed & edited it, from start to finished product was over 4 days & a total of 35 hours. It was released on January 12,1969. Their first rehearsal together was on August 19,1968. This is a great debut album, especially for a new group & all being under 25.
Was just a wee lad when I heard this the first time. Was so dark and heavy that it spooked me a little. Like nothing I'd ever experienced before. I was immediately hooked.

Diane, as someone who grew up in the 70s, listening to this music and seeing them live twice in the mid 70s, I must implore you to talk to one of your friends, obtain some hippy lettuce- partake a cpl-a hits- maybe a cpl-a glasses of wine/Guinness and revisit this song(album)- it will be a whole new awakening....Your friend in the great northwest(Seattle)- Wayne Maher 😊
I recall vividly my late friend Doug H. calling me up all excited because he had just discovered this fantastic new band, "Come on over and I'll play it for you." In 1968, I was 22, and Doug was 19. The changes in this song and on the album were mind blowing. We had to wait a whole year before they made the SoCal debut at the Rose Palace in Pasadena. The crowd went nuts when they took the stage. I would see Zep perform three more times before they disbanded. They achieved legendary status and will always be regarded as one of the greatest Rock bands of all time.
The middle part with Plant oooing and ahhing also has Jimmy Page playing his guitar with a bow. This song was the first Zep song I heard and many of my aged friends as well. It was a music explosion that has lasted over 50 years.
Had to get a bow with my first electric guitar. Violin shops must have wondered why bow sales tripled all of a sudden!
I've heard this song countless times, and it never occurred to me that he was using a bow! Now it is so obvious. Mind, blown.
The only part of Jake Holmes' song is the descending base line used at the start and after the solo . The lyrics are not Holmes'. The centre part and the finale are the work of Jimmy Page and developed during his Yardbirds years. The song was further refined to take advantage of the talent available in the LZ line-up.
Yep this is 90% original to Zeppelin, only rudimentary based on the Holmes song.

I used to listen to this on a “Walkman” cassette player in high school during the early 80s. I found that Jimmy and Robert could capture and express my emotions musically. At the time I didn’t care for what was on the radio and this music was as old as I was! Glad to see you appreciate it Diane!!😍

Great, all time classic, Zeppelin was known for reinventing others music, getting proper credit was lacking at times but no dpubt, they made this theirs no matter how you cut it. Live it took on a life of its own, going from 10 minutes early on up to 45 minutes later in their career. Try it live at MSG 1973, it is the best live video of it you can see. Unreal jamming and Page is otherworldly! 🎸

There's a 42 minute version of this song floating around, but the 28 minute version from Madison Square Garden is really popular.

A lot of people say that Zeppelin were always only a “studio “ band that Jimmy never was talented enough to play live. Obviously they never witnessed the Madison Square Garden concert which was absolutely mystical and utter perfection…!!!

Lots of great rhythm and tempo changes in Led Zeppelin songs. They have been known to "borrow" a little bit here and there, but that was fairly common. Jimmy Page producer, founder, and lead guitarist of Led Zeppelin, created many iconic guitar riffs, which became the basis for many of their songs. Prior to LZ and the Yard Birds, he was the most sought studio guitarists in England. I wonder how many of his creations were "borrowed" by the same musicians that say he ripped them off. Great reaction, and next LZ song studio version of Babe I'm Gonna Leave You on the same album.

My favorite Led Zeppelin song
1969 I hear Led Zeppelin I over the phone from a school-mate's Dad's stereo. Went to buy it, the persons in front of and behind me both bought it as well! Instead of the usual Top Twenty LPs display, they just had only copies of LZ !. It made a big impact.
That guitar solo is teetering on the edge of going off the rails, only to be pulled back together for that sweet singular instrument/guitar grungy sound. Then the drum drop, followed by a second drum drop (that is unexpected ). Every time I listen to this song I get goosebumps at that same spot. Then at 7:51 the way the guitar comes back in to end the song. EVERY time. This is my “go to war” song. If I ever need to defend myself for my life, this song will be the soundtrack to that event.

Jake Holmes was on tour with the Yardbirds, where Jimi Page played guitar at that time, Jimi was impressed by that song and they took it over to their repertoire, the Yardbirds split up , and Page reformed new musicians to fulfil the contract they still had, called the band The New Yardbirds and later changed the name to Led Zeppelin, a name inspired by Keith Moon of the Who. Dazed And Confused was one of their first songs, all the arrangement was already there with the Yardbirds, there is also a video on TH-cam.
Your Zeppelin journey has been a joy to watch and has rekindled my appreciation of just how good and how influential these guys were. Mark the end of your journey by listening to their albums back to back in chronological order. As for the dispute, well, wouldn't be the first time (and won't be the last) an artist has been accused or even found guilty of ripping off someone's riff.

Just a quiet little masterpiece.
This album changed the world of music forever. We had never heard anything like it. It brings me to recall one night in the 80s when some coworkers and myself were gathered at a local bar we frequented. A group of 4 or 5 young "hipsters" wearing slick leathers came in and started playing "Loverboy" on the jukebox. I countered by playing the entire Side A of this album. The bartender, who instinctively knew what I was up to, cranked up the volume. By the time "Dazed and Confused" was half over, the kids with half a pitcher of beer still on their table, got up and left. Not tonight, boys. Not tonight. "Give me Led till I'm dead!"✌
Song still gives me the chills fifty plus years on.
I've heard both the Yardbirds and the Led Zeppelin versions. Both great.

Hello, and Happy Wednesday Diane. Led Zeppelin had a movie called The Song Remains the Same. You might like it, it was a concert from Madison Square Garden in 1973, and also features little mini movies of each band member playing different roles/characters.
Highly, highly recommend watching this.

I have heard Led Zeppelin Dazed and Confused and most of the Bands songs. Led Zeppelin has so many good songs when I think of 70s music Led Zeppelin comes to mind. Regardles of whether they made versions of other people's songs or not, Led Zeppelin made these songs sellable. The songs were not even popular until Led Zeppelin remade them. There's a reason why Led Zeppelin is the Greatest band in history, and its because its the only band that has for masters as musicians. They need all four of them to perform together for you to experience greatness! Like they say, you dont listen to Zeppelin, you experience greatness.
Had a 20-something getting into Led Zeppelin, asked me (an old fart) what else there was like them. I said NOTHING, it's why we still listen to them more than 50 years later.

Yes they took some lyrics and a bit of the descending bass pattern but go listen to Jake Holmes version and compare it to zeppelin and you will see that yes they should’ve credited him but in no way was Jake Holmes version like Led Zeppelin did with their version. Reworking it is mild. They took it to a level that Jake Holmes could never have imagined and added riffs and other segments that were never in the Jake Holmes version!

Just Grand, Irish Girl! I was fortunate enough to see Led Zeppelin twice; '75 in Detroit and '77 in San Diego. They didn't happen to play this song at either show, but the ones I heard were almost all extended versions of the regular album tunes. Some stretched well past the 10 minute mark, total jam session on stage. Their music is certainly timeless and epic, no matter what the actual source. They've plenty of original stuff that has earned them the accolades.
Watching your reactions to all this great music, I often get the feeling that you're actually a reincarnated Rock 'n Roll Hippie Chick! (But with clean clothes and access to a shower!) It's obvious that it touches your soul in ways similar to mine back in the day. Looking forward to the next episode on this musical journey.

I just listened to the Jake Holmes version. It's clearly the same song. I think the only reason Holmes didn't win the copyright suit is that he waited too long to file it. The law gives the copyright holder 3 years to file a suit. Holmes filed the suit 42 years after Led Zeppelin released their first version of the song. And it's not like Holmes can say he didn't know about it. Led Zeppelin's version was quite popular, both on record and in live performances.
There's a long and interesting history of copyright suits in popular music. Some are valid, and some are bogus. One that's similar to the Dazed and Confused suit is for the Vietnam war protest song "I'm Feelin' Like I'm Fixin' to Die Rag" by Country Joe and the Fish. The melody was a near copy of an old jazz tune called "Muskrat Ramble," written by Edward "Kid" Ory in 1926 (or 1921, depending on which version of the story you believe). Ory never did anything about it. He died in 1973 at the age of 86. In 2001, Kid Ory's daughter Babette filed a copyright lawsuit against Country Joe McDonald (writer of "Feelin' Like I'm Fixin' to Die Rag") on behalf of the Kid Ory estate. The courts found that Kid Ory and his estate had waited too long to file the suit. There was also the problem that Ory had never formally registered a copyright with the federal government.
Led Zeppelin is a great band, and their performances are epic. They do have the reputation of copying a lot of their music from other sources without attribution. This reputation is earned, IMO. I wish they'd been honest about it. They'd have made plenty of $$$ even if they'd shared their revenues with the original songwriters.
All violinists use rosin on their bows. It's not something that Page invented.

They weren’t doing anything every other band was doing at the time
there is a video floating around out there (been a long time since i've seen it ) that shows how almost all of the early Beatles hits were note for note riffs of songs by American blues artist's. they did that because they loved the music so much. we used to say that the blues had to go to England so that it could come back to America
The first time seeing Zeppelin was 1969 70 at the Fillmore East in New York all nights at Madison Square 1973 plus a bunch more.
I'm sure I have already made this suggestion here, but I will do so again. You should do the studio versions first, then do a live version of every song. The difference between the studio versions and live are miles apart. They are nearly in most cases completely different with some similarity to the studio. The songs are even different between concerts. They never played a song the same twice that I am aware of. Similar but not exactly the same.
The Led Zeppelin songs You have reacted to are Whole Lotta Love, Stairway to Heaven, Black Dog, Kashmir, Immigrant song, and Dazed and Confused. Try listening to Zeppelins songs D'yer Maker, Over the Hills and Far Away, All My Love, Rock and Roll. All of these songs play a lot on the classic rock radio stations.
I would add The Rain Song, Tangerine, All Of My Love ✌️
And don't forget another cover, "When the Levee Breaks."

Something to listen for: call and response by Page and Plant or Bonham and Jones. I believe this song has both. It happens in a bunch of Zep tunes.
JIMMY PAGE ACTUALLY PLAYED THE QUITAR WITH A VIOLIN BOW
'Dazed and confused' was originally written and recorded in 1967 by Jake Holmes... In 1968, when Jimmy Page (guitar) was a member of The Yardbirds, they performed and recorded a variation of the song that was re-titled "I'm confused"... Page played his guitar w/ a violin bow that created those long, ominous notes on the track for the first time.
When The Yardbirds broke up in mid-1968, Jimmy Page assembled the 'new Yardbirds' by the Fall and they became Led Zeppelin... Unfortunately, they were short on songs for their debut album, so they recorded a few cover songs... Page re-arranged the original 'Dazed and confused' song and included it on the debut album by Led Zeppelin that was released in early 1969.
Jimmy Page also included a cover of Willie Dixon's 'You shook me' on Zeppelin's debut album... but his friend and former bandmate (in The Yardbirds) Jeff Beck (guitar) had also recorded a cover of 'You shook me' for his debut album 'Truth' in 1968... and it upset Beck at the time.
Fabulous band as always! My favorite since 1970! This 28 minute live at msg 1973 is MIND BLOWING!!

I'm glad that the young generation is discovering the powers of rock artists like Zeppelin'. You decide to go to the studio version but you should go to live versions which are much stronger and better regardless of taking 10-15 minutes of your attention when performing a song. Led Zeppelin were the strongest and the best when performing live. That's why they are legendary., they were a Ferrari of rock music.
Listen to the whole album Diane. It is just the beginning of their work. Strongly suggest taking in the whole albums from 1 to Physical Graffiti chronologically. By the time you get to the latter you will understand why they are considered the greatest rock band ever by millions of people.
They were heavily influenced by American Blues artists and are therefore sometimes called out for "ripping people off". If you listen to the original recordings of songs they are accused of "ripping off", you will quickly realize that they were an inspiration, not theft. Success breeds jealousy and greed by less successful people and their offspring.

Jake Holmes played the song when he opened for the Yardbirds in New York in 1967, when Page was a member, though at first Page denied having heard it. He had a version of the song with the later Yardbirds where he used the bow on his guitar. That was suggested to him by the London Philharmonic 1st violinist, who was the father of actor David McCallum back when Page was a session musician. McCallum Sr. also lead the orchestra on the Beatles "Day In The Life".

Loved your facial expressions to this song. I listened to the Holmes version. I wouldn't say Page stole the song but he was inspired by it so much so that Holmes should have been credited for it from the beginning. He is now. But it's an almost completely different song and Zeppelin's musicianship just blows Holmes version away.

There wasn't sampling back in those days.P.s. Jimmy Page's previous band The Yardbirds had used Jake Holmes lyrics. After the broken up , Jimmy took it to Robert Plant who changed the lyrics.
OMG it's scary how much you and my oldest Granddaughter are alike. She discovered old crazy Grandpa has all this stuff on vinyl. She is always in my hippie cave when they visit jamming out.
