Gordon Hayward’s half-court attempt for the National Championship deserves a deep rewind

  • Duke is leading Butler by two in the closing seconds of the National Championship. The Bulldogs have no timeouts but they still have one final chance at upsetting Coach K’s Blue Devils. With the ball in Gordon Hayward's hands, there was just enough time to get off a prayer that would quickly overshadow what led us to this point. March Madness turns the unknown into household names and the latest on that list - Hayward, Brad Stevens, Matt Howard - were looking to take it a step further and win it all.
    But they weren't the only ones feeling the pressure. Kyle Singler, Jon Scheyer, and Nolan Smith had yet to live up to Coach K's standard while at Duke. They've had incredibly productive careers, and yet this was the first year making it past the Sweet Sixteen. As soon as each team won in the Final Four, we knew there was a chance of something special, but never imagined an ending like this.

      His entire rookie season should be a rewinder. I couldn’t imagine a guy coming in now, and being the Most important player on a championship team; and LITERALLY saving the league from bankruptcy; tripling NBA viewership and making the finals be broadcast live for the first time ever; in a single year.

    • @cjwrench07
      @cjwrench07 5 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      sozcan You know the only time the Celtics averaged the same amount of viewers as the Lakers ??? When they played the Lakers!
      The Celtics averaged half of what the Lakers did normally on national broadcasts, so their games were moved to regional broadcasts. The Lakers were THE ticket to league success. That’s why mid-season the league’s contracted national broadcaster, paid extra to change the NBA Finals from tape-delayed broadcast, to live nationwide. *IF, The Lakers made it there* Bird’s Celtics weren’t even in the conversion.
      Bird’s jersey sold heavily in the Boston area, and the majority white areas of the south.
      Magic you ask? Well he sold equally well everywhere in the US, among almost every demographic.
      The League, and even competing team owners, pushed “Showtime”, lead by Magic. In a mid-season game in New York, Magic playing in MSG that night was the lead basketball story. The Knicks were basically treated as the home team playing the Globetrotters. They were there, but they weren’t what everyone came to see.
      You gotta watch the documentary on Magic, the one he wasn’t personally involved in. Where they just go by the facts and stats, and not Magic being modest about his role in the rebirth of the NBA.

      that has more to do with his HIV diagnosis, and his early impact on the league is more peripheral, but they do come with some good stats on the 1979-80 NBA season.
      Check on how League salaries had jumped up from 79-84. The economic-leaning stories are the ones that go into the base stats of how much of a cultural phenomenon ShowTime was at its height, and their monetary impact around the league. Like the great growth that always came with a Lakers Dynasty, which is unequalled by any other team.

    Inesta's goal in injury time vs Chelsea is a MUST

    • @jasonglasser1621
      @jasonglasser1621 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Only if the Tom Henning Ovrebo storyline is fully explored as well. I mean the man himself has admitted to missing several penalties, which would have made the Iniesta goal irrelevant. Most Chelsea supporters will claim 6 missed penalties, a neutral article a few years back went through the claims and found 3 to be valid (and a further one debatable). If he calls only 1 of the 3 (a 33% correct call rate, which is still universally terrible) and it's buried, Iniesta doesn't matter.
      Now I'll be the first to admit that Chelsea supporters had gone too far in the wake of the match with death threats and the like, which should never be acceptable, but Iniesta's goal only mattered because the whole situation leading up to it allowed it to matter. Barcelona were not the better team that night, or in that semifinal on the whole.

He was very nice and even gave some advice on how to improve, and even giving advice to try other sports as they all will help “especially younger” Im still glad he has been able to have a long career, someone with this much heat coming into being drafted couldve not said anything or just given basic advice but this seemed very genuine especially looking back now.

      No. "I believe they should do the Warriors final possession of that game and consider the final buzzer and final score the moment in history". Those 2 plays were historical but doesn't really put the nail the coffin. On Cavs side they could speak about them after the decision and how they got Irving. LeBron returning. The impact he made on new coach and creating a core there. His legacy. Brief history on Cleveland sports.
      On Golden State they could talk about Steph's MVP season. 73 win season following a Championship year. Steph's injury in the playoffs. The OKC series. Being up 3-1 in the Finals. Draymond's suspension.
