The heart-stopping final seconds of Carmelo Anthony's freshman title run need a deep rewind

  • One coach was going to win his first, long-awaited title in the 2003 NCAA Men's Basketball Final. Kansas's Roy Williams had built a deep, senior-led team to bring the Jayhawks back to the precipice of glory. Jim Boeheim had finally gotten Syracuse back to the Superdome on the back of one of the greatest freshmen ever: Carmelo Anthony.
    But in the end, it all came down to the little things: missed free throws, a kick-out to the corner, and one frantic, last-second close-out for the win.
    Welcome to a moment in history. Let's rewind.

      This was my favorite Kansas team of all time. I was 11; I was told it was too late, and I needed to go to bed. I had a small battery powered radio that I remember putting into a shoebox to listen to the end of the game, because it sounded like the radio call was coming from inside the Super Dome. The ending broke my heart, as did Roy Williams' leaving afterwards, but I still remember that March Madness and that game with fondness.

      Man Utd v Bayern Munich in the champions league final in 1999 would be an even better episode of rewinder than the Istanbul "miracle". Because of how much bigger that game was, it being the first (and to date only) treble in English football history, and how they went from going into stoppage time at the end of the 2nd half losing, and within about 2 mins turned it around to actually be WINNING the match with two goals in back to back minutes which rarely happens in general, let alone right at the very end of the biggest football match in football, the champions league final.
      And also the man utd team was completely destroyed with injuries and suspensions from red cards etc, so half the starting line up was players playing out of position because there was nobody else available, like giggs was playing on the right wing if I remember right, with jesper blompquist of all people playing left wing, Beckham was playing as a central midfielder which he'd never done before (he only started playing there full time years later when he joined real Madrid, before then he was always on the right wing). So there shouldn't have been any way man utd could have beaten Bayern, especially considering Bayern were ALSO trying to win a treble and if they'd won that final then they would have sealed it, just like man utd they were 1 match away from winning it, and so they weren't just any team, not even any typical champions league finalist, they were just as strong as utd really, and weren't destroyed by injuries and suspensions. So how on earth could man utd have actually won that match? Literally everything was stacked against them. Yet they managed it, all the same.
      It's still the greatest comeback victory in football history. And was way more of a big deal than most champions league/European Cup finals. It's never been done before or since, by an English team, and only like 3 or 4 other teams in all of Europe have ever done it in the history of football, too. One being bayern themselves, years and years later, another being Inter Milan when they were managed by Mourinho, and Barcelona under Guardiola. So, all huge huge teams, teams who are in the discussion for best ever in the history of the sport, when simply just winning a regular champions league isn't enough to automatically put you in that conversation. And I think Celtic when they won it in the 60s, which actually is probably the most stunning thing to ever be done in football in general because all the players in that celtic squad were from within like 5 miles of celtic's stadium. That just isn't a thing anymore, these days. No big team even has all the players in their squad be from that country, let alone be from the same city as the club. But that was generally a lot more common back then, all the players being locals, it was before big money had really taken over the sport. It wouldn't happen these days.
      But yeah, man utd winning it in the modern era of football with an injury-wracked squad is absolutely stunning. There's no achievement like a treble. It's next to impossible to achieve even at the best of times, let alone when half your first team can't play in the final. It'd be like in American football if, I dunno, Tom Brady and 7 or 8 other starters had to sit out of the superbowl because of injuries and suspensions, and yet the patriots still won it anyway.
      It's the thing that put Sir Alex Ferguson over the top to become the best manager in the history of the sport. Managers who win multiple champions leagues aren't automatically the best ever. Plenty of bad managers have won champions leagues before, like Di Matteo with Chelsea. Has he even has a job since he got sacked by them? But to win multiple champions leagues AND at least one of them being a treble which is more difficult to do than just about anything, then yeah you are always going to be in that conversation.
      It's very telling how none of the big money teams who pay to win, like Man City, Chelsea, PSG, etc, have managed to win a treble, even though they have significantly more money than anybody else. Because there's some things in football you just can't buy. Teams like man City say at the beginning of every season that they're gonna win a quadruple, and everyone laughs at these teams, and then everyone moves on and those teams then pretend they never said it, because they invariably fail when they say something like that. It's tempting fate, really. Don't jinx your season before its even begun. But some football clubs just seem to run on pure arrogance.

    This game changed so much. Jim Boeheim was free to stay for basically forever as the coach at Syracuse and Roy Williams felt he couldn't win it all at Kansas so he went back to UNC. Does Boehim coach so long without winning this title? Does Roy go back to UNC if he won a title at KU? That's something I wonder about.

      Such great points. If Roy wins this title, it's just hard to imagine he goes back to UNC...Maybe he still does, but coming off a title, you'd have to think KU would've given him a lifetime contract. As a heels fan, I'm actually grateful for this Kansas loss, because it basically secured Roy coming back, where he got us three more titles.

      I always think about how we view Jim if Keith Smart’s shot doesn’t fall. Does he stay forever and after winning two titles what do we think of him. While he’s a great figure of college basketball he isn’t the one of the greats but with two titles what does that mean?

    • @johncate9541
      @johncate9541 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yes, he does. He left for two reasons. One is that he didn't like the changes in the administration at KU after he'd turned UNC down three years before. The second is that Dean Smith asked him to come back, and he couldn't say no, even after Kansas fired the AD Roy didn't like.
      He was going back to UNC, win or lose that night. He would have rather gone back with a win, though. Kansas fans didn't forgive him until they kicked his butt a few years later in another Final Four. Roy, a class act, then pulled for KU when they won the title two nights later. It all worked out. Roy won three titles at UNC and Kansas has two under Bill Self (and really could claim 2020, since there was no tournament and they won the polls).

    • @kylethomas2993
      @kylethomas2993 ปีที่แล้ว

      Based on a book I had read called the Legends Club, Roy said he wanted to win a title at Kansas before leaving which is why he turned them down the first time. He probably still would've left, but I can't tell you for sure.

A bunch of people I knew that played against him then thought there was no way he could ever play at Syracuse, and then he came back for his senior year and just exploded...The jump he made that summer was just awesome, and at that point, everyone was like "Oh, he'll definitely be ready for the big east" and boy was he. Seeing this play always gives me chills, because I remember seeing him as a lanky, raw, 17 year old, and then three years later, he makes the biggest play in the NCAA title game. • @elliemyers6435
      @elliemyers6435 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@MrPhilaCuse Eh, I wouldn't say that. Yes, Wallace fouling out was huge, but, Kentucky was up 5 with a minute left, with the ball when that happened, so they most likely win even if Wallace finishes the game. If you look at the play where he fouls out, 'Cuse turns it over, and had he not fouled Mark Pope, Anthony Epps has a wide open layup on the other end, so they still would've most likely been up 7 with a minute left...that's a game they still most likely win. Now, maybe the game does change if he doesn't pick up a few ticky tack fouls early (some were definitely a little soft) and can play really aggressively at the end, because he was the best on the court that night. Kentucky had absolutely no answer for him. Kinda surprised he wasn't a better pro.

    Man I remember this tournament like yesterday. My team, the Texas Longhorns, had a great squad let by TJ Ford. They made their best run in the modern NCAA era making an appearance in the final four. Unfortunately they ran into Melo and Syracuse and he proceed to torch them. Melo was so good that year.
