generall yeah, animals don't belong in cages long term, it's like the same logic you'd use for a 2 year old who's too fast and would run anywhere, do anything and doesn't know what's rude/wrong and what isn't, you keep them with you/close to you when you go outside, make sure they don't try and run or hide when you take them to a doctor and don't keep them restrained at home.

I had a huge rabbit cage in the house. It had plastic floors, it even had a level my bunny could jump up on. When I was home and could watch him, he was free to run around in the playroom. Sadly he died after having him about 10 years. I got another bunny, one day I left her alone in the playroom while I went out, I forgot I left her out. I came home saw the cage door opened and looked all around for Honey, my bunny, I ran upstairs to see her laying on the carpet on the living room floor, she was breathing very fast and hard, I looked around and saw that brat had broken a beautiful , dark purple colored glass pitcher, an antique from France...see she knew she did bad haha, but never again was she allowed to roam, hop, run free in the house when I was not right there to watch her
I had no idea they could be so affectionate. That is very sweet.
They have incredible personalities. Like cats, they can be litter trained. Also like cats, though, some are more affectionate than others.
I had a rabbit when in my early twenties he was so sweet! Loved to jump in my lap, came when I called him too. Mr snuggle loved sitting on my lap while I studied lol.
I had a free roam turtle growing up. The little guy was extremely social and loved wandering up to people. He learned how to ask for food (camp in front of the fridge door), he learned how to request a bath (he loved swimming in the tub), he was potty trained (water dish in the bathroom), and he even learned how to come when you call his name.
I believe all creatures are much more intelligent than we generally give them credit for.
This is one of many reasons why people become vegetarian or vegans

@@dyskilz because animals are more intelligent than they get credit for…? So people choose to not consume animals, because animals are intelligent and not just meat products..? I’m not vegetarian or vegan, but I’m smart enough to see the correlation between people starting to recognize more intelligence/consciousness in animals and an increase in vegetarian/vegan people. Might want to go back to middle school and read up on context clues as well as correlation.
There are some breed’s of chicken that are every bit as stupid as you think they are, if not worse. Others are pretty damned smart, even nigh impossible to keep contained.
That said, whoever decided that chickens should be synonymous with cowardice has likely never been around chickens.

Many years ago I had a beautiful rabbit , he was never locked in a cage , he had the free run of my garden , at night he would go to his hut to sleep . He would run up the garden to greet me when I came home from work , his name was Thumper , I still miss him 30 yrs later .
That’s sad and at the same time wonderful what a positive impact he had on you that you still miss him so much after 30 years.

@@jacquelineheimburg9600 thank you , Thumper was a real character , he looked more like a Persian cat with long ears than a rabbit . I always gave him strawberries while I brushed his fur . Like I said , I still miss him over 20 years later .

we had a free-range rabbit in the house, too. we quickly learned she would chew wires, chair legs, furniture. they need to constantly chew to keep their teeth worn down... i hope you are providing things to chew and putting some sort of protection on the legs of your furniture... and wires out of reach!

The way he runs and jumps you would never believe he had a spinal injury. He's so loving. You have a lot of patience and love; he feels that.

I had a cat who had a spinal injury that was similar, the back leg movements were too extreme. He walked like he had glue in the back legs

I don't really remember it but I know my family had a pet rabbit and got rid of it in end cos it kept biting people, causing nasty injuries. The person who took it didn't want it for a pet....

We have a Chester but he’s a lop bunny and he hates me and my partner but loves two out of three of my children so much. And he chases me and my partner to go away from them 😂

Every rabbit and animal in general for that matter, have their own individual personality. They have a much higher EQ and IQ than we could imagine...all it takes is a loving heart to realise that ...❤❤
My relative's rabbit was wailing and screaming when it's mate died.
It was terrible. They had a lovely spoiled life though, both gone now.
This fact has helped me grow my own faith. Every animal, like my children, has a different personality. I see no reason that this doesn’t carry down to even the smallest animals. It is amazing.

She didn't mention it, but our uncaged bunny taught herself to use the kitty litter! Rabbits are fun, but they tend to have tummy issues and perish quickly without much warning. Heartbreaking!

@@CharGC123 Yeah, I litter box trained my girl. Had her for 3 years then she got hepatitis and died a week after my birthday this year. They said she inherited it from her parents. First she stopped pooping then eating. I had the vet perform surgery thinking it was a blockage but her liver was discolored. I held her as she went went to sleep.

I REALLY needed this video! My father raised rabbits for food when I was a child growing up on a small farm, and it was traumatizing. Today I saw a video some 50 years later that made me cry; it was very hard on me.😢. I now have two pet rabbits, one a rescued wild Cottontail and a mini Rex, both female. They have been very healing, and so has this video. Thanks for posting such a heartwarming experience! 😊

I’m so sorry. I remember visiting a friend of my Mother’s who was a Greyhound trainer and I was wandering around the property and walked into a large shed that had cages and cages of rabbits. Being an animal loving child I was also traumatised because I wanted to love and pet them but could feel their fear. It made me feel very sad. It really can be a very cruel world to be born into if you are a sensitive soul. I also had a pet rabbit as an adult named Scamp who I absolutely adored. He was with me for 8 years and was my closest companion. Folks don’t understand how incredibly sensitive, sweet, delightful and innocent they are. And how much joy they can bring to a person’s life. I’m so glad you are enjoying the company of your precious rabbits now. Sending love also to your own precious heart 💖
@@debrajorgensen2730 Thanks for sharing your own experiences! My father slaughtered rabbits out in the open, in plain view of all five of us kids and the other (some 200 rabbits). We didn’t have a barn. I thought my father was very cold blooded at the time. Within a couple of years, my father sold all the rabbits. Decades later, he revealed to me it was the hardest thing he ever did until he finally couldn’t take it anymore. He said if people had to slaughter their own meat, most would be vegetarians (and he ate very little meat the last twenty years of his life). I’m not a vegetarian because I’m diabetic and that’s an impossibility, but I would be if I could. Rabbits DO have delightful personalities! And often demonstrate remarkable intelligence. Mine are mischievous and playful, both affectionate in their own way. I also have five parrots and I could probably write a few books on just the birds alone (three I’ve owned now for 21 years). Animals are just a different kind of people-uniquely beautiful in their own way. ❤️

for sure! I don't have that level of calmness or trust with my rabbit I've had for four years. But I did have a cat on medication who passed at age 14 in Dec '20 and we were really bonded as well. Something about daily handling for medication makes you really close, you have to be super slow and cautious to not have them hate you if you're medicating them often.

@@dawnbaker1970 Our pet rabbit when I was growing up was potty trained. I don't know what breed he was or how he was trained, I just know it is possible. He had a box with newspaper in the laundry room and that was his spot. He was allowed inside and in our backyard when he was older. We never had rabbit pee in our house. They do make great pets. 🐇
@Gretchen K. that's just not true they're cleaner than cats and naturally go to their litterbox. Sounds like someone didn't take care of making their environment comfortable for a bunny. Mine has been free roamed all her life and she just go to her litterbox and chew on empty cardboard boxes we gave her occasionally. If your bunny is destructive it's because the environment is stressing it and you don't give enough hay (it should be available all the time, and accessible from the litterbox, as they use it while eating). If they eat enough hay their teeth get worn out naturally and they don't feel the need to destroy random things. Never had a bite to my remotes. Consider spaying and neutering your rabbit if you didn't do it, especially female ones, they have 80% chance of death from uterus cancer after reaching 3 years of age, it will greatly calm their hormones and help if you're experiencing territorial peeing in other places than the litterbox. Also if you have a very soft couch or very fluffy carpet I'd recommend forbidding the access to it if they're victim of such pees, and if you ever need to get them replaced consider flat carpet and firmer couch.
Also I'll take a pebble of what is essentially dirt over a cat misplaced poop anytime, and they don't throw up either. If cats with their claws are allowed to free roam then so should bunnies, because a good environment and good care won't lead to your pet destroying things.

@@dannik1298 it’s best to start when they’re young. You put a box in a part of the room and put in some shavings they’ve peed on and some of their poop do they know that’s a spot for the bathroom. If they go elsewhere give a very very light tap on the nose and say no. And when they do go to their box cuddle or give them a treat to thank them. They pick it up wuickly
Litter box is the easy part. I was letting my baby roam but he was chewing up all my baseboards. How do u stop that behavior?! My ex husband had an executive home and when we moved in together, he rented his home to a lady that had a rabbit also (just beautiful) but that thing chewed up the baseboards also and THAT was more more expensive than my house.
My first rabbit, Peter, lived for 12 years, but my last rabbit lived only for 5. His name was Kookyshek and he gave himself that name in a hyperdimensional dream I had where he spoke to me in a childlike voice and told me that was his name. He was a magickal friend and I miss the little guy a lot. It's been 12 years since he died and every now and then I think of him. One time I was thinking about him and found a brand new leather jacket someone had thrown out. When I got it home I discovered that it fit me perfectly. In one pocket was a 50 Euro note, and in the other a train ticket to Nurnberg via Schwandorf (abbreviated as SAD) for one adult and one child dated 22.10.2010, the same exact day that Kookyshek died. It was his way of consoling me.

It can take years to fully gain a rabbit's trust. It can take a year for a rabbit to lose its fear of being picked up. I'm amazed at how quickly Chester trusted and accepted you. You're a very lucky family, and Chester is a very lucky rabbit.
Until I got a rabbit, I had NO IDEA about their loving, fun and quirky personalities. It takes time to bond with a rabbit, but it is SO worth it for all the love and trust they give in return. Space, interest and interaction really benefit these special creatures.
It sounds like only one rabbit? Please consider keeping rabbits in a group or at least as couples.

@@Yugilein , Rabbits are actually solitary creatures. I had my pet rabbit, Hopscotch, and he would have hated another rabbit being around. And if you do get a second rabbit, trust needs to be earned from both of them. It is a slow process.

Rabbits are such wonderful beings. It hurts my heart to think of rabbits who are kept outside in tiny cages...in the cold...or the heat....
We have rescued rabbits from outdoor cages where they are starving with nothing but a filthy water bottle. We take them home and they now live like Chester free roaming with gourmet salads, toys, companions and tons of love.
Bunnies are built for the cold so they can handle it as well as a dog. Though if it’s to cold you might want to bring them in or to hot you wet them down.
My bunny used to be outside in a cage then a stray dog came and bit of his toes under the cage 😔 after that we made sure their was a woodboard he could be on to protect his remaining toes. Then he got a friend they hated one another lol because my bunny wanted to be a little more than just friends. His friend escaped and I’m not sure what happened to him our neighbor thinks he got into his truck bed than jumped out when driving. As for my bunny my uncle let him out to Rome the yard I never let him Rome alone myself without a leash I was to afraid he might run away into the forest but any way we had just gotten a new puppy and when she saw my bunny frolicking about he met his untimely end. I was just told he ran away as to not make me resent the new pup.

We had a bunny that we stopped caging the first year. He was the absolute best pet ever. He would come down the stairs to greet us and sit on the couch with us, or at our feet when we worked. I'd make little salads from the garden for him in the summer. He lived till the ripe old age of 12. We still miss him after almost a decade. But rabbits are worth the time.

Mine lived to be 12 too! He passed in 2021 💔 and was free roam too. It was a bond and love like none I've ever had with anyone.

I had my bunny for almost 12 years. I miss him everyday. Chessie acts EXACTLY like my Bela (as in Karolyi) did! We had an Airedale Terrier as well and they would sleep together on the dog bed. We had a cage for Bela (where his bed/litter box was) but the door was left open so he could choose whether or not to go in there ... and he WOULD go in there for his quiet time. People do NOT realize (I myself didn't realize) that owning a rabbit is the same as owning a dog or cat. It's a long-time commitment ... but so worth it!

@@briang.4249 I have also sadly heard that animal shelters are in crisis where bunnies are concerned right now. Sadly, people got them as lockdown pets but are now abandoning them or surrendering them to shelters that are taking in more than 8 times more bunnies than they would normally expect to do. Not that there's a wrong time to save a bunny but now is definitely one of the best!! 🐰 🐰 🐰

We also had dogs with whom she played & slept - they got along so well together. She was never caged & was house-clean. Bunnies are such sweet creatures as this lovely video showed!!

What kind of a sick person thinks a female woman is a the mother of a rabbit?
I had a rabbit like this who free roamed around the yard and inside the house. He mostly stayed outside with the chickens. He loved the chickens a little too much and would guard them like a rooster. I could tell how intelligent he was.
I heard that apparently you can potty train them to pee and poop in a litterbox too. Crazy really lol
@@johannesbaptistlotz9650 we had 2 dwarf rabbits when my son was still crawling. Theu used the litter box. We discovered one day when we moved the couch that they had been chewing on the wooden baseboard. 😬 they were fun. But I will say their pee smells like cat pee, and they tend to drop "pellets" here and there. (Had to watch my toddler carefully. 🤣🤣)

We had a pet rabbit that roamed around our yard as well. One day a man rang our doorbell with the rabbit in his arms. He panted "Your rabbit must have gotten out, I caught it for you." The guy was exhausted from chasing the rabbit. I didn't have the heart to tell him we let the rabbit roam outside. I just said "thank you" and took the rabbit from him. I waited until the kind man drove away before releasing the rabbit back outside.

My dog Charlie KCK died of a heart failure and the dog I saved helped me through the pain and missing Charlie so much, and healed my heart...and he would take me out for a long walk and I would pray. I have my bun now for 4 years and she was a rescue too. She got lumps under her nippels and she had MAYOR surgery, they did hysterectomy and removed the lumps. She nearly died but I prayed SO hard and today no lumps and one happy free range bun!! She has the house and garden to herself and she is a true diva!! I had NO idea buns was so smart had such amazing personalities and I am totally in love with buns they are AMAZING pets. But not for children and they are hard work. I don't mind the work but people should be aware that buns need a lot of attention and their living areas needs constant cleaning. In some countries they are seen as exotic pets so a trip to the vet may also be more expensive.
IT IS ALL MORE THAN WORTH IT AND I CAN NOT SEE MY LIFE WITHOUT HER!!!!❤❤❤❤
I love this story 💜 When I was 12, I rescued a baby bunny from the neighbor's poodle. He was very young so I had to feed him special milk from a dropper. My mom named him "Booballa". I have no idea how she came up with that name. When he got old enough to jump out of his box, my mom told me to let him go. Broke my heart. I took him to the field behind my house and put him on the grass. He wouldn't leave my side. I nudged him and he hopped off, I was in tears. He came back every year. Yes, it was him. He would hop to me.

I lost my bun Binkie in a traumatic way several months ago. She was such an amazing, intelligent, and loving bunny. My heart is still shattered, but this made me smile. So thank you for that! I had a rabbit named Binky who tragically died when I was 18 and it stills pains my heart 6 years later... I loved that bunny so much. I'm so sorry for your loss!!

@@kariay50 I also lost two bunnies at a day one was brown and another one was white and black. Brown one licked me a lot and the white one bit me. I don't what was the reason but that day was extremely cold in the winter when I wake up I saw both trembling a lot upside down. I took them and put in my blanket but for sometime they were good but after sometime when I unwrapped my blanket they both strived and at last moment I gave them water in their mouth with a spoon and they made a screeching sound and died. ☮️ RIP Brown one was 3 weeks old and the white was 2 weeks.

Brianna instinctively knew Chester needed to be uncaged. We’re all animals-humans just need to pay attention better, like she did, and we can figure out what other animals need. What a wonderful bunny mom Brianna is!

I have 16 rabbits that free range my six acres. They never leave. They interact with the family and the farm animals. They are friendly and super smart. They have places they can sleep, yet they choose to dig burrows and just be rabbits. Best choice I ever made was throwing away the cages. This is the first person I’ve seen that free ranges their rabbit as well. It’s awesome!!

I have a rescue bun that lived half his life in a small cage. It's been four amazing years since that. He now has two more bun friends and all three are free roam in the house. I can't imagine making a bun live in a cage. They're so smart and social. No bunny should be in a cage....
Does free roam mean you have bunny surprises all over the house you have to clean up? Or can you train them to use a specific area?
@@GhostSal bunnies usually establish a toilet corner all by themselves. So the usual way I heard people do it, would be to start them off in a cage, or in a caged off area lined with newspaper, sawdust, and straw, so that you can easily clean it up when they establish their toilet somewhere in there. And in that spot you then put the litterbox.
Chances are that the rabbits themselves will also appreciate to have a small cozy safe space to make themselves at home in the beginning. The big human home owner can spend the time the bunnies spend acclimating, making the zones where they want their bunnies to roam "bunny safe". Bunnies like chewing things, and that can be dangerous to some things, as well as the bunnies. So when you then open their cage up to give them the option to roam more freely a little later, chances are good that the bunnies have already established a toilet and a sleeping space in their "original home area", so that there is no need for any further training.

if they are suprised (something make them afraid). then they loose the hard excrements.....i take the vacuum cleaner to get rid of the little balls.

What a funny and beautiful bunny! I’m so glad he has a loving mommy who pampers him every day! Animals can see colors we can’t; they can hear things we can’t, and they can certainly feel our emotions better than any person. They know when we are hurting. And they do their best to cheer us up.
Wilma, a Holland Lop I had from July 27th, 2010 until July 18th, 2019 when she died very suddenly from a seizure, almost always accurately detected my emotions/disposition as well as I could hers. This was but one reason why we bonded so well and so quickly.

I grew up with dogs and cats, and the complex and fun-loving personalities of rabbits are incredibly misunderstood and underappreciated. With proper space and attention, they can be the most rewarding little creatures. Just like dogs and cats, rabbits are happiest when roaming free and when made to be a true part of the family, which clearly this owner has done. 💝

I can relate so much to this. My rabbit also saved me as much as I saved him. He is one of my greatest joys and loves. He was diagnosed with a cancerous gum tumor a year ago and after many operations and overnight stays at the vet I brought him home to live his last days with me. That was a year ago! I spend lots of special time with him and there is no longer any sign of the abscess that was going to end his life. I treasure every day with my precious boy.

@@purerachet7715 if they are spayed or neutered most will use a litter box...they leave some poops laying around but they are like coco puffs so just vacuum them up. I have a very very very neat bunny & she still will leave a few. Or if you have multiple bunnies they leave them around for territory poop markings😀 Bunnys are amazing!!!

I too had a beautiful, velvety soft, fat bunny named Thumper. He didn't kiss my face or run around like this rabbit...he just loafed around the house (he was a free range rabbit) but he was the BEST bunny I could ever ask for. I had him from when he was about 6 wks old until he was 13 yrs old. Watching this video and reading these comments made my heart happy...I love and miss you Thumper everyday...you were the best and mommy loves you and will see you one day!

Yeah, I hope so too. Idrk anything about rabbits but this reminds me of my companion dog who'd just keep going towards people who'd react kind of similar because she wants to get some love from them because she likes them 😂 She's a big black strong dog so guests who are scared of dogs were truly struggling a bit (not in a complete panic way because they would like to like dogs without fear) but it's crazy how chill Sali (dog) is around them even though Salen herself has anxiety issues & normally she'd sense when someone's scared which would make her suspicious of that person & "defend" herself aka bark.
Our pet bunny pinched my finger once but we always figured he was just testing to see if it was something to eat or actually part of a human. He didn't bite any more after that. I think this girl's father needs to quit running away and make friends with the bunny. I'm sure the bite was accidental if the piece of Apple was too small. Mom and Dad should try again with that really sweet bunny.

No silly he chases the dad because he's trying to tell him look I like you I'm no threat. I had a parent once that I was terrified of and one that was passing by his cage big cage he touched me and I screamed and he started saying no no no it's okay it's okay and I asked a woman in the kitchen who also owns parrots and she told me he was trying to tell you not to be scared of him. That parrot was abused by my roommates and I adopted him and uncaged him & he was so loving to me.
So what the dad should do is allow the rabbit to sit on him and not run away because he'll keep chasing him, but he's never going to bite him. When they bite it's because that got between the animal and what they wanted. The rabbit wanted the APPLE he was trying to bite the apple not the mum

Chester chasing your dad around reminds me of our pet skunk Stinky. The next door neighbor was afraid of her, but like Chester, Stinky loved to fluff up her fur, make her tail as big as it could get and follow Jenny around. As soon as Stinky heard Jenny’s voice…..she was on the prowl. Naughty bunny and skunk, but they definitely have a sense of humor.

I lost my bun buns about 1 year ago on Oct. 12. , he was a new Zealand white bunny with red eyes . No body wanted to touch him , cuz of his looks. But after a while. The neigbors started knowing how lovely and smart he was. He was responsive to his name being called❤ we would take him for walks. Amd he would literally by my feet walking beside me. He enjoyed the smell of the grass and outside dirt ( earth ) 🌎 my hubby came up with a brilliant idea, to built him a 2 story cage outside. This is where He thrived. !!! His personality came out. Hes fav thing to eat was kale. And he'd love it when i would call him " BUNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNEYYYYYYYY" with a high pitxhed voice. He was a sucker for sweets! 😂💓He would kiss us chase us. ♡ and i would let him roam free when the days I was off , he was the happiest! And the funniest! he would also do some kick flips! I love that I literally could trust him to roam free and he'd come back! Always.. we weren soo Blssed to have him, ! We gave him so much love and attention. !!♡♡♡he was the best . He had a heart attack after 2 huskies came in our yard and snatched him from out his cage. THIS BROKE OUR FAMILYS HEARTSIN HALF. !!!! 😢 i love and miss him so much 💕 🎉 MAY HE REST IN PEACE. ❤️

This is so heartbreaking. I hate people who are irresponsible letting them roam free to cause harm, damage, kill other pets, etc. Plus when they are free other people can poison or shoot them just because they are not contained. I'm so sorry your bunny suffered this and your family for losing him
Till this day I don't know who's dogs belong to. I looked and looked so that way I can express to the owners irresponsibility , and the harmed it caused my family waking up that sad morning to me screaming yelling that buns buns was gone, I was torn. And broken inside. I started to get depressed. He was an emotional pet, he was there for me when I was withdrawing from pain killers. He was the only one there..still looking in my eyes and laying on my lap. 🤧🤧🤧
I get shivers still till this day. I'd I'd woke up 20 mins earlier and looked outside , I would of seen something. And saved him I saved him so many times from possums and cats b4 I was just saddened by the fact he was probably waiting for me to help him 😩😪💔 i miss him so much. I have to live with that for the rest of my life. 😢 I wish he was still here with us. When I found him, he was till warm to the touch. Just stiffed..I even tried to wake him up =/ his eyes went from red to blue.💔💔💔💔💔💔💔💔💔💔💔💔😢😢😢😢😢😢😢 It still hurts till this day. 😪
@@lucyenriquez8329Wow! I'm so sorry that happened to you and your rabbit ! People are often careless about letting their dogs roam on the streets or rural areas. If you do decide to get another rabbit in the future, because those dogs are still out there,and any large dog can be a threat, please set up your place so that the new rabbit can live inside the house. They can be potty trained. And the wires and other electronics bunny- proofed,lots of tutorials on that subject. Grief takes time to recover from,it can take years even. You'll know when you are ready for another rabbit. I've chased away many coyotes who were after pets in the neighborhood. I hope you'll find out who the owners are one day.

My rabbit was never in his cage, only to use the bathroom. Rabbits are extremely smart and can be potty trained. They are also emotionally intelligent and can sense when their human is happy or sad.

@@sooshu5079 Do you have a litter box? For me, I have a rabbit and we keep the litter box inside the cage now, the bunny used to be in a cage, which was probably why it couldn’t go to the bathroom anywhere else so it went in the cage, then it just got trained not to go out. It used to go in this one room, so we put a gate around it and you could open it if you had to go in that room, but the bunny couldn’t. I don’t really know how else because that’s just how we did it but I’m sure there’s someone else or a tutorial or something or tips
@@sooshu5079 maybe instead of throwing their “accidents” away throw it into the litter box. Also if you catch it mid act pick it up cause that’ll teach them it’s a mistake! If it’s going to a specific spot put the litter box there. That’s what I did with my rabbit, but all bunnies are different!
All of my bunnies have been toilet trained. Fill a litter tray with sawdust and put a little of their pee and poo in it. They get the idea almost immediately because they’re such clean wee animals.
You are obviously a great mother to all of your fur babies. It's very easy to see the love you and your babies have for each other. ☺️👍👍
