  • Free HP mod! Quick tutorial on how-to adjust the wastegate actuator arm on a 1st gen Hyundai Genesis 2.0T. Very simple and free mod that can be done with basic hand tools. Overall the mod so far has been great. I hold higher boost longer now which really makes a difference when getting into the higher RPMs. Make sure you check out all of my other Genesis videos and don't forget to like and subscribe! As always, thanks for watching!

    This actually helped give my 2012 some oomf! Before this, flooring it up the on ramp to the highway I'd be at about 60mph, on my first run after 1 full 360° turn I was able to get to 90 mph. Excited for the tune im getting next week! Did this to tide me over till then

    the factory ecu is designed to have the boost taper off at higher end to prevent detention, engine damage. your preventing the Wastegate from opening when it's supposed to by over tightening the rod. the immediate damage you might never notice but that has good potential to have your boost creep more than where it should be. as done here there is no damage because he barely forced to put the actuator back on. but to anyone not sure about how it functions be careful.

    • @ElPants21
      @ElPants21 2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      my guess is the stock turbo is running out of flow in the higher RPMs more than it's the ECU pulling boost for engine protection. What I noticed with this dude's pulls is the peak boost was a bit higher but it still tapered off. that said, the ECU should adapt over time back to the target numbers unless you reprogram it.

  • @BrosFOURRSpeed
    @BrosFOURRSpeed 8 ปีที่แล้ว +17

    After about 4 months, has the ECU adjusted for the stiffer wastegate? I've heard that the ECU will figure out the mod and the car will go back to stock on its own.

    • @CaptTwo6
      @CaptTwo6  8 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      No I haven't noticed it going back to stock and it still holds higher boost to redline. However, I have done quite a few more mods since so I have unplugged my battery and reset my ECU since so I am no to sure lol

      +Jason Pennybaker cool thanks for the reply. I did 2 full turns on my wastegate and I'm now getting a peak of 15.5 psi and it holds around 12 rather than 10.

      +Honda4RideRed No problem man. Good to hear that you are getting some more boost out of this. I was thinking about doing some more turns but I have been really happy with the results. I just installed a new intercooler and my boost has smoothed out even more. BTW Keep the videos coming...you have the best Genesis TH-cam channel IMO!

      +Jason Pennybaker Thanks! We try to make a video for everything on our cars. I originally read the thread Grimmspeed did. They tested the car with 2.5 turns so I decided to play it safe at 2. I don't think it's recommended to do anything more than 3 turns.

    I just did this on my 2011 2.0 T R-Spec. I just turned the rod one full turn (360 degrees) and it made a nice change. I hope the
    ECU does not learn about it right away and I hope the motor doesn't mind the change. I don't know if it makes more power but it does rev out better and I don't miss the 3 series quite so much.

  • @wmcomprev
    @wmcomprev ปีที่แล้ว +1

    This can be done, within certain limits. The actuator (the other end of the rod he adjusted) has to stay within a certain voltage range or your check engine light (CEL) will come on. That voltage range indicates the position of the actuator. Making this adjustment will change the position of the actuator. He's adjusting it towards one of the limits on the allowable scale. So, even if this works, if anything changes, such as due to wear, you may be so close to the limit that the change will push you over the limit and trigger the CEL.
    As long as you're within the specs, the adjustment shouldn't damage the engine. If you're out of the spec range, you'll trigger the CEL, but it may take a couple of days before it comes on. Check the voltage range allowable for the actuator and the proper procedure to adjust this while reading that voltage, then go toward the edge of the range without going beyond it and see if that helps.
    Also, the instructions call for adjusting this on a COLD engine. The turbo charger gets extremely hot. You use a scan tool to read the voltage on the actuator with the ignition in the ON position, but without the engine running (for a keyless system, push the button twice, but DON'T step on the brake as you do it).

      +The Best (Hoffman) I have had this mod done for 4 months now and zero problems whatsoever. My tuner actually recommended me doing this to achieve the target boost levels for the tune. I do not have any dyno numbers before and after but there are some posts on the Genesis forums that show an increase in HP and TQ on a stock car with just this mod. All it is mainly doing is holding the boost at a higher PSI longer instead of dipping down so quick. I am happy with this mod and I do not intend on changing it back. I might actually do 1 1/2 more turns. Hope this helps

    • @CaptTwo6
      @CaptTwo6  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Greg Keefer Hey Greg...since you have the BK2(2nd Gen) Genesis, your car has an electronic wastegate so this mod will not work for your car. As far as not getting into boost I am not sure what would cause that. I know for the new Gen Coupes they will not boost if you are low on fuel. The ECU prevents this as a safety feature for your car. What other mods do you have done?

    • @CaptTwo6
      @CaptTwo6  9 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Evin Kilicarslan I don't believe this will raise your peak boost. It just holds the wastegate closed for a longer period of time which will result is a higher boost to redline. Stock levels should be 14psi peak and taper to 10psi.

    I have been trying to figure out an issue on my 2011 Genesis. My CEL came on for the turbo bypass and I have another code for low boost. I am only getting MAYBE 7.5psi. I pulled the diverter off and the diaphragm had suction so I would think it is ok. I am not turbo savvy as this is my first vehicle with one. You ever have this happen and maybe have some suggestions for me on what to look at?

      I know this is an old post, but I would assume you probably blew one of your air intake lines off. Check all the lines that run off of your air intake manifold, your blow off valve, or whatever you’ve got. If they’re all secure then you should be getting boost. If they are all good then the problem is with this mod or you damaged the turbo.

    • @johnsullivan937
      @johnsullivan937 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      yes, I would definitely not do this. tunes/reflashed ecus usually raise the boost properly to about the limit that the stock turbo/internals can handle. Doing this with a tune would cause the boost to go too high and would probably lead to a big boom sound after a few times. My tune raises the boost to 19-20lbs. Which means it would hit like 24-23 instead, not safe.

    • @CaptTwo6
      @CaptTwo6  3 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      @@Who-vk2ke It is not fast from the factory by any means (at least the 2.0T version). With any boosted car opening up the exhaust will help the turbo response. ECU flash is the best bang for the buck with these cars to get some extra HP. The stock turbo is small so it can only handle around 250whp which is decent compared to stock but not fast..it is "faster" though if that makes sense lol

    Dude can you tell me in all honesty.. is the genesis that slow? i mean being turbo there has to be easy ways to make it quick... im upgrading from an SRT4, i test drove a genesis and i fell in love. but stock boost and all that is just so low...

    • @CaptTwo6
      @CaptTwo6  8 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      +Kenny Riveron Hey man...yeah its super slow, especially in stock form. The turbo is so small and cant push more than 250ish WHP without upgrading. A tune definitely helps but by no means is it fast. I hit mid 14's in the 1/4 mile with my current set up which is decent on all season tires. I would try to go with a 2013 or newer simply because it comes stock with 60 more hp. You can easily get over 300 whp with some bolt-ons.

    • @perrymanessis708
      @perrymanessis708 8 ปีที่แล้ว +8

      +Kenny Riveron, Hey it's got the same TD04 turbo as your SRT4. BUT, it was set up at the factory by a 5 year old Korean toddler. The wastegate has TOO much play. It's so loose that it needs at least 2 whole turns on the arm to get it to baseline. The other thing is the BPV/Purge Valve (whatever you want to call it) releases pressure at part throttle acceleration, so you're better off capping the solenoid and tapping into a vacuum source from the intake manifold. The other thing is the air filter box is also very restrictive, but the pipe going to the turbo is 3" so if you get a 3" cone filter with a 3" short pipe it will really breathe better. Basically for about $30, for a 3" cone filter, 3" pipe, about 6ft of 5/32" vacuum line, a vacuum cap, a Tee and 3 zip ties, it becomes a fun car. I'm a Turbo Mopar Guy, I've got a 1990 Dodge Daytona Shelby VNT and a 1993 Dodge Daytona IROC RT and can honestly say it's about as fast as both of them after the $30 mods I did. And it's a lot more fun to drive and a hell of a lot easier to mod. It loves to kick the ass out, think of it as the offspring of a Vette and the Daytona IROC RT. The TD04 with the wastegate set correctly still has a little more lag than the T25 VNT in the Shelby VNT, but less than the T3 in the IROC RT. Also, the 10-12 Gennies had a vacuum wastegate, Mopars got rid of the vacuum wastegate back in 1985. Basically with a little fine tuning it becomes a very fun car to drive. And if you tune it and go crazy with bolt ons, it becomes a beast.

    won't you need to take it to a performance shop to retune this on a dyno? Cos you're getting more boost on the stock tune so you're gonna be running really lean. that'd be non-ideal of inefficient combustion and hence will decrease the longevity of the motor and it just won't run healthy.

      +DgoSRCF Is it manual or auto? If it is manual I highly recommend checking out Piranha Racewerks. They offer a base tune for 91 or 93 octane which is good for a stock car or a short ram/cold air intake. They have the option to rent their device for 350 and once you mail it back you get 150 refunded. So 200 bucks will raise your stock boost from 14 to 18psi and you will net 30-40 WHP and 70+ ft/lb tq. For the price this is the best bang for your buck on this car hands down. It's super easy to tune as well...you receive the unit, plug it in, follow the instructions and enjoy! I run the PRW 91 base tune with full bolt ons and you can check out my other videos to see the results (dyno, 0-60, racing and more)

      Put a turbo on your BMW then you could mess around with the waste gate ha

    • @CaptTwo6

      It's possible if you are stock. Be advised that I have a PRW tune which caused it to run a little rich so there is some room for play with my set-up.

    • @CaptTwo6
      @CaptTwo6  9 ปีที่แล้ว

      If I previous owner messed with it I would suggest finding another Genesis with a wastegate that is stock and count the threads on the arm. That's honestly he only think I could think of lol. What is weird about it?

      I say send it man...easy way to free up some HP. A tune is pretty cheap and goes a long way too. Dont waste money on an intake unless you just want turbo sounds

    • @GTkars
      @GTkars 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Get a electronic boost gauge and up the boost to 17 psi using the wastegate arm. You want to make it shorter so the wastegate stays more closed. Allowing more boost to run. Over 18psi the ecu flips out.

    • @CaptTwo6
      @CaptTwo6  8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Feel free to. I am tuned and my tuner recommended doing this to help hold my boost. My AFR's are solid at WOT and I have put close to 10k miles with lots of hard driving with zero problems. A few turns won't hurt anything especially if the motor has some miles on it.

      I don't see an issue with this as well. All you are doing is making the spring a little stiffer so it doesn't release the boost as quick. The only downside I can see with this is if you tighten it TOO much or extreme prolonged use could cause the OEM spring to go bad, quicker. If that happens to be the case, I'll just go out and get the Forge actuator.
      I just did mine two 360 degree turns this afternoon but haven't gotten a chance to drive it.
      Prior I would push about 18psi (SFR Tune) and it would tail off to about 15 or less so we will see what happens now.

    • @CaptTwo6
      @CaptTwo6  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +msmith87 Yes I agree. I have stuck with the 1 1/2 turns since I made this video. To me it sounds like your SFR tune is pretty good. I was hitting 17 psi and tapering to 10 but now I'm holding 14-15 to redline

      I just got done driving around. boost gauge was showing 17-18psi and around 5750 (I have an AT) it dropped to about 14-15psi so it still holds well.
