Don't let the 'metal' tag confuse you, the genius of Meshuggah can be heard from 3:08 to 3:55. Killer groove, killer riff and nothing fancy from Fredrik, just the perfect notes (guitar solo, sort of) complimenting the entire thing. One of my favorite M tunes.
It's a pleasure and a joy to watch you play man! You groove to these complex rythms with such ease. I'm a guitar player, and your videos have helped me alot to grasp the rythmic concepts of many Meshuggah songs. "Do Not Look Down", is hands down the grooviest song of the past decade, and one of my favourite 'shuggah tracks in a long time even though I do rate the vast majority of their stuff highly. I would love to see you play something from Catch 33. Maybe "In Death is Death" and "In Death is Life" as one track?
The fact that you keep doing 8th notes with your left foot through the whole song is quite amazing. I don't know why I pointed that out, but it's just a sign that you have an amazing control over your body while playing the drums.
This is good! one of meshuggah's simpler ones, but has the essence of the band coming through in it vividly. First time I've heard this song but this guy plays it well! I love those cymbals man, great combo.
I watch you for like 3 years now and man I'm still amazed for your work you've done into your drumming. You're one of those drummers who does have the sound in the hands-groove-drums.. I should call it "You are the drums" :D I've always enjoyed the fact that you're keeping the groove with the hi hat.... that's like... Holy cow it's just amazing. Great job as always! Greetings from Poland :)
thanks man i wouldn't say i break cymbals that often... it really depends how much i play/practice. if i'm playing at least 5 days a wk i'll probably go through maybe half a dozen crashes and a china a year?
well my main 22" heavy ride serves as a great ride (nice bell, bow etc) but also crashes really well. the other cymbals (legacy rides) are very thin but sound amazing as crashes and have all the qualities i like in a crash. they're dark with a trashy qualities
i think i get more excited when i see excellent covers by good musicians such as yourself than i do from listening to the original recording. Top stuff Troy
you are correct, in an interview the members said they improvise a lot of live performances, the thing is, however, 4/4 is the better option because when written down it more clearly shows the rhythmic nuances they implement in their music. for example, in "break those bones whose sinews gave it motion" you could write in 11/8 but it is much more interesting to think of as 4/4 because that highlights the rhythmic "dissonance" as the groove shifts through the phrases.
Damn dude, so sick. What I love most about your videos is you can tell how much fun you're having playing the songs. And by "playing the songs" I mean "absolutely destroying the songs". Cheers from TX, USA!
Look at my transcript mate.. It is a 17-16th note phrase. I don't even know what the time signature 4.1/4 is? If by that you mean 4/4 and then another quarter note then that is slightly long. In your words it would be 4. 1/16 which would be 4/4 with an added 16th note. 17/16
Seen all your videos and out of all of them I enjoy watching and listening to you play Meshuggah especially this song. This is my favorite song off of this album too and you play it so f#cking flawlessly. You're a great f#cking drummer, dude! Drum long and prosper!
all good on the double comment mate :P but i checked out my left stick and all i could see was it hitting the floor? i can't remember catching, or dropping (or even throwing) a stick in this take haha
I was so proud when I figured out that 7 + 4 + 6 phrase in the intro right from the get go. suddenly they start that freakin' groove on a totally surreal beat... Feelin' like Bad Luck Brian..
serious? i hope you've seen all his videos and teachings. He is a great drummer for his age, and he's making quite the name for himself in the drum world honestly. Very precise and creative drummer, and he knows his shit well. Keep up the good work Troy, I love seeing your video's and teachings and enjoy your enthusiasm in teaching people, and I LOVE how you show something that can help us less accomplished drummers achieve the beat you are teaching (i.e. your bleed-meshuggah vid).
man with this video you blew me away. I like the fact that you play accurate, fast yet you HIT HARD. this is how I like to play also. I like to hit HARD, to get the resonance out of the shells. Great work dude.
Practice on your legs g!! Use your knee caps as high, mid toms, thighs as snare, hh and low tom. If ya wanna be extra, grab a couple of cushions and use those as cymbals. Makes for great practice
This is so well done man! Such a groove this song has, and yet that kick pattern just twists my brain up. Glad I found this cover, now to watch all your others!
i thought it was 17/8 at my first listen but if that were the case then the groove after would all be in 8th notes not 16ths... this would be much more difficult to read
the intro to this song always gives my chills, when the drums lock in. ugh
Not everyone nails the feel and groove...
you did.
fucking brilliant!

***** I agree, I love this part, it is so epic. Goose bumps!
***** Yeah, it's Groove Metal.
***** man i love that part, fucking amazing. i love these chilled out, atmospheric parts with chilled solo guitar. reminds me of catch 33 a lot. :)
+Yo BroMan I prefer the 3:56 groove tho!
4/4 backbeat over a 13/16 rhythm for 19 repetitions with a 9 16th note tail to bring it full circle at 16 bars
Thanks a lot mate. Glad you're enjoying my vids!

Superb playing, watched this for the thousandth time & still amazes me.
The opening riff/rhythm gets me every time... i love the lyrics too
I can;t get over how much i love the sound of those drums and cymbals. Pearl and Sabian for life
No Matter wich song he's covering, his snare always sounds exactly like the original one ... or even better :D
that groove...
This is good! one of meshuggah's simpler ones, but has the essence of the band coming through in it vividly. First time I've heard this song but this guy plays it well! I love those cymbals man, great combo.
all in the description mate
ill be leaving Swarm for the medley... Still planning on covering a few more from the album tho!
the actualy hihat part is from sonor. the arm and adapter are pearl

The only other drummer out there who can capture the Meshuggah groove!!
its a UX-80S to an AX-25L Pearl adapter attached to a sonor X Hat
Another fantastic cover from Mr. Wright. Keep em comin.

knocking out my favourites first!
Dan, those Legacy's... so good. Always a pleasure watching you crush these tracks.
Effin impressive dude. Time signature nearly impossible to follow. Incredible
The time is straight 4/4. You can Bob your head through it like a hip hop track
@@GingerDrums no it’s not straight 4/4
@@GingerDrums 17/16 over 4/4
This song is 100% groove, I love it. Excellent cover.
i think i get more excited when i see excellent covers by good musicians such as yourself than i do from listening to the original recording.
Top stuff Troy
its 3 pieces, a sonor x hat, ax-25L pearl adapter and another pearl smaller arm
i want to thank you on behalf of drummers everywhere for these lessons

most of what you're looking for is at the gear page of my website wrightdrums
do you mean all up? (transcribing, practicing/learning, playing, recording)
Your pushes really cut through and hit hard AF! As a guitarist, I appreciate this.
all in the description bud
Thank you for giving away the transcription for free. Saves me a lot of time transcribing! Well done, Troy.
Dude, I learn so much from u. Ure technique is the bomb and every hit is precise...ure awesome.
MOTHER OF DRUMS.
OH MY GOD. The drum groove in this song!
So I had two tabs open, and even though I was paying attention to the music, I totally forgot that it was a drum cover! Well done, Troy!
You never fail to amaze me with these covers... They are fucking flawless... I dream of playing like you
you are the only drummer on you tube that really do really good meshuggah stuff. great sound, groove and video.
You are seriously the guy, a true boss of our society
Dude, that song kicks ass, and you kicked the song's ass. Great groove. These Meshuggah guys are onto something methinks.
I was thinking about getting a sleep, but I have to listen this over and over again.
What a fine groove.
Groove and Power...in spades. Well done!

Absolutely insane drumming. Big props!
I don't particularly like the type of music you do, but i love watching it cause you are such a good drummer!
Seen all your videos and out of all of them I enjoy watching and listening to you play Meshuggah especially this song. This is my favorite song off of this album too and you play it so f#cking flawlessly. You're a great f#cking drummer, dude! Drum long and prosper!
Yeah mate. The back beat then falls on 2 and 4 in 4/4. Have a look at the transcript link dude
all good on the double comment mate :P but i checked out my left stick and all i could see was it hitting the floor? i can't remember catching, or dropping (or even throwing) a stick in this take haha
Troy laying the absolute smackdown.
I was so proud when I figured out that 7 + 4 + 6 phrase in the intro right from the get go. suddenly they start that freakin' groove on a totally surreal beat... Feelin' like Bad Luck Brian..
Your transcript helped me so much thanks! I will put a cover soon when I get my mixer fixed.

Speechless. Awesome drumming.
Koloss medley, that's awesome.
Thanks dude! I hope you are able to make a living from being a drummer/musician. You deserve it.
man with this video you blew me away. I like the fact that you play accurate, fast yet you HIT HARD. this is how I like to play also. I like to hit HARD, to get the resonance out of the shells. Great work dude.
Learning to play this song on drums is definitely on my bucket list. I’m a guitar player living in an apt with no drum set. A man can dream.
This has been well worth the wait! So awesome!
Fantastic cover man. You are definitely my new favorite drummer on TH-cam.
Flawless cover!
thanks a lot man!
Also I wanted to thank you for the free transcript! Im in Korea right now and if I end up being pretty decent at this song, I'll post a cover video!

The 4 dislikers are having a fabulous tea party on an upside-down stool.
An amazing cover! You´re great! Awesome vids.
Cheers from Portugal.
very awesome cover mate, super clean, groovy! love that song!
Such a good groove man nice job
marrow is the first song of my koloss medley
Brutal and perfect. My favourite from the album is "Break Those Bones Whose Sinews Gave It Motion".
i thought it was 17/8 at my first listen but if that were the case then the groove after would all be in 8th notes not 16ths... this would be much more difficult to read
HEY !!! You play great ! You have play with such power and it looks very smooth !!! Keep it up !!!
and I really like you Cymbals - they sound great !
