Not a bad effort but lets remember that Claire Torrey made this up on the spot and recorded it in one take - surely the most amazing piece of improv in music history

While I think she did good. Saying that she "exceeded" Pink Floy's recording was grossly over stated. And remember, the soloist singer hired by Pink Floyd went into the studio and was told to improvise and do whatever she wanted over the sound track. She did it in one take. And it was perfect. I'm sure the X Factor contestant rehearsed a lot and had a personal coach. Apples and rocks. Not even in the same fruit family.
Couldn't listen the entire way through. Her voice grates on my nerves. Look up a kid named Tallulah Ruff. She sang it spectacularly well at a high school talent show. Crystal clear with excellent range.
The song began life as a Richard Wright chord progression, known variously as "The Mortality Sequence" or "The Religion Song". During 1972 it was performed live as a simple organ instrumental, accompanied by spoken-word samples from the Bible and snippets of speeches by Malcolm Muggeridge, a British writer known for his conservative religious views. When the band came to record Dark Side in 1973, the lead instrument had been switched to a piano. Various sound effects were tried over the track, including recordings of NASA astronauts communicating on space missions, but none were satisfactory. Finally, a couple of weeks before the album was due to be finished, the band thought of having a female singer "wail" over the music. Clare Torry's vocals As the band began casting around for a singer, album engineer Alan Parsons suggested Clare Torry, a 25-year-old songwriter and session vocalist. Parsons had previously worked with Torry, and had liked her voice on a compilation album of covers.[3] An accountant from Abbey Road Studios called Dennis contacted Torry and tried to arrange a session for the same evening, but she was initially unenthusiastic. Torry was not a particular fan of Pink Floyd, and she had various other commitments, including, she later admitted, tickets to see Chuck Berry that evening.[4] Eventually, however, a session was scheduled for the following Sunday. The band played the instrumental track for Torry and asked her to improvise a vocal. At first, Torry struggled to divine what the band wanted, but then she was inspired to pretend that she herself was an instrument.[5] She performed two complete takes, the second one more emotional than the first. David Gilmour asked for a third take, but halfway through Torry stopped, feeling she was getting repetitive and had already done the best she could. The final album track was assembled from all three takes. The members of the band were deeply impressed by Torry's performance, but were so reserved in their outward response that she left under the impression that her vocals would never make the final cut.[6] She only became aware they were used when she saw the album at a local record store, spotted her name in the credits and purchased it.
Rockin Atheist I once used her voice part of the song & made a 30 minute cassette tape of her singing that. I listened to it so much the cassette stopped working.. then i discovered the "cd" & didn't have to make cassettes any more. Technology is awesome!
Rockin Atheist ... the only thing you didn't mention is that she was paid standard session work fees. I believe she made something like $200 for this, good money in 1972 but Pink Floyd has made many millions off Dark Side of the Moon - and her work was unquestionably a highlight.
Я помню исполнение данной композиции в Одессе с Pink Floyd tribute - мурашки и таракашки бегали по коже. Поклонники оркестра Харди гордятся Татьяной - Умница! Желаем победы!
A nice performance. I do however feel it missed the raw emotion of the original. Her control isn't as good as Claire Torries, but kudos for trying it. Nowhere to hide there!

Clare Torry was a session singer, not a back up singer. In 2004, she sued Pink Floyd and EMI for songwriting royalties on the basis that her contribution to "The Great Gig in the Sky" constituted co-authorship with keyboardist Richard Wright. Originally, she was paid the standard flat fee of £30 for Sunday studio work. In 2005, an out-of-court settlement was reached in Torry's favour, although the terms of the settlement were not disclosed. All releases after 2005 carry an additional credit "Vocal composition by Clare Torry" for the "Great Gig in the Sky" segment.
Check out the female singer for the tribute band Brit Floyd, I will never say anyone was better than Clare Torry but Brit Floyd comes as close as you can get to being equal.
It looks like an ordinary "gray mouse" from the province, but what a voice! And God gave talent! Every time I get goose bumps, from head to toe, when I listen to it! Super!
No se que dicen, pero una canción tan universal como TGGITS puede ser reinterpretada de muchas formas, y lo que logra esta dama es una hazaña increíble, no a la altura de Claire Torry pero si hace honor a su talento. She did it.
Better than Pink Floyd? U obviously never been to a Floyd concert. Let me know when this chick sells over 100 million albums and let me hear her out play David Gilmour on guitar.
Vic Manuel if u think this chick was better than Pink Floyd, than u have never listened to them play not to mention they all play instruments while a, she can do is sing. While she wasn’t actually singing any hung sung by Floyd and only sung a rendition of what Clare Torry sung, she did a great job but Torry was absolutely perfect pitch on The Great Gig in the Sky.
No contest Pink Floyd was one of of the first concerts I saw in 1973 and I don't want throw shade on her effort but I'd rather see Pink Floyd again than see her !
They should not have chosen the word "exceeded." Did she do very well? Absolutely. Did she exceed the original release of the song? Of course not. When you oversell something, it can only disappoint.
There is no denying this woman has raw talent. That is a given. The question is, is she better than Clair? The answer is a resounding, "Hell, to the, No!" Go listen to the original and you see, talent that is not, raw!

She's got a beautiful powerful voice. I loved her singing without lyrics. Why is she compared with Pink Floyd? This is totally different. It doesn't make sense to me that people have to set up a single file hierarchy, designating who is best and who is worst. There is an infinite variation of styles and beautiful music, and that is as it should be. Of course there is also junk.
She is being compared to Pink Floyd because it's one of their songs duh lol Clare Torrie sang as a backup singer for Floyd, she's not bad but not even close to Clare !!! No one can do it like Pink Floyd ......
I always see this, with a title saying it’s better then the original song. People get mad at the singer, I hate it. They have no appreciation, this lady sang a pretty hard song. Those notes are spot on. The amount of octaves are in this song is allot. So be respectful for gods sakes
Love how she sang this her way instead of trying to mimic the original 100%. Even Clare Torry sang it differently a lot of the time. That's the great thing about the song-the point isn't to sing it perfectly, the point is to just sing it.
It took 9 seconds for this girl to even sing loud enough to know she was singing. To be compaired to Clares' original work in a short reply B S this woman never NEVER got close to the quality of the music of Clare Torry nor should her name be recorded as even a good attempt at matching the quality and the soul touching sounds that Pink Floyd and any member whether it be like most female vocalists with the group is a one time go at it and lady you missed it and in my opinion you never had the soul that only a BRIT would know and I am from the states and a retired musician of over 50 years. As they would say in the olden days keep that dog on the porch she can't run with the big dogs. Tim
Respect for at least acknowledging my country's contribution to music - A rare event on the Internet! From a guy from a country that has a fair stab at some half decent Rock music to a guy from a country that invented it - *Thank you!*
Tim:I listened to both performances in parallel. Torry' s voice is sharper and higher and this woman's is fuller and warmer. This woman's performance is brilliant. As far as the soul that only a BRIT would know as you say that is total bullshit. You want to say something deep since you have spent a lifetime in music but that is pure bullcrap. Try to listen to both in parallel and this time pull your head out of your ass, and give an objective opinion.
tempo ratus Torry riffed the original herself, it was in effect *HER* composition & yes she did come from a nation that has created about 99% of *THE* greatest Rock music on the planet so the guy above was spot on!
Deep Heat, Yes, Claire Torre did write the vocal line. But you forgot to mention that she had not heard the track before the recording session (She may not have even known who Pink Floyd was). What you hear on the record is the first and only take. No rehearsal. I do not recall if she listened to the instrumental tracks before recording her vocal. Everyone else you hear performing this song, has had time to rehearse it Claire did not.
This woman was incredible. See, there’s terrible, bad, average, decent, good, great, incredible, and Pink Floyd. But nobody beats Pink Floyd. Nobody.
Idk abt that but Pink Floyd’s great
Clare can't be beat, i dare to say her work on this song is the best vocal performance ever. At least for me.
Actually nobody beat Clare Torry, the original singer. This was great though,
This is the correct comment

I'd say a bit difficult to exact Torrys rendition. Note per note in 2 mins

She did an incredible job! Truly a talented woman to be able to handle such a difficult vocal.
Duh she didnt handle shit she was horrible
She made the song her own and nailed it. Impressive!
Foi o que me impressionou também. Ela não imitou Clare Torry, mas fez sua própria leitura e interpretação.

Because the clip's title includes the words "Better than Pink Floyd". No, she isn't. She is quite good for an amateur, but that's it.
I actually thought she was pretty amazing!
Check your hearing... seriously. Somethings wrong.
@@MeanGeneSanDiego She wasn’t that bad.

Потрясающе пронзительно улёт молодчина браво!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Amazing!🇧🇷🤟
I always see this, with a title saying it’s better then the original song. People get mad at the singer, I hate it. They have no appreciation, this lady sang a pretty hard song. Those notes are spot on. The amount of octaves are in this song is allot. So be respectful for gods sakes
She’s very good, but in no way did that top the original recording..
Great sounding voice for sure. But I've never heard any one mach Clare Torry's original.
So good, but not better than the original.
I agree !!
Love how she sang this her way instead of trying to mimic the original 100%. Even Clare Torry sang it differently a lot of the time. That's the great thing about the song-the point isn't to sing it perfectly, the point is to just sing it.
That was really good! Brave choice of song and very difficult to replicate.
Absolutely agree
Try to listen to both in parallel and this time pull your head out of your ass, and give an objective opinion.
tempo ratus
Torry riffed the original herself, it was in effect *HER* composition & yes she did come from a nation that has created about 99% of *THE* greatest Rock music on the planet so the guy above was spot on!
Deep Heat,
Yes, Claire Torre did write the vocal line.
But you forgot to mention that she had not heard the track before the recording session (She may not have even known who Pink Floyd was). What you hear on the record is the first and only take. No rehearsal. I do not recall if she listened to the instrumental tracks before recording her vocal.
Everyone else you hear performing this song, has had time to rehearse it
Claire did not.
Yeah Clare never sung falsetto on this
She's good but not Pink Floyd. She'd be awesome to watch in a pub though. :)
I dont think so
2:54 the moment he knew when the drum is begin... I know he's the only one that noticed this is Pink Floyd 👏👏
Спасибо ДОСТОЙНО!!!!
Truly amazing....gave me massive goosebumps...loved it.
