Never been much of a lyric person, I usually just listen to the music and take the lyrics for granted. Just read the lyrics to this song and it hit me to the core. I've been dealing with depression for quite some time, and all of this is so painfully recognisable to me, it's like I could've written these exact same lyrics. Thank you guys for expressing what I fail to express so often, I am in your debt.
LYRICS: Expose me for all that I am The man behind the masquerade I am my own false witness Fact resides solely in the depths of my mind And will I ever really let it come to surface? You only see what I want you to see And you believe all that you're told Serenity is a beautiful hoax, a liar I have the whole world convinced of my contentment No truth in this I've lost count of all the times I've made it home alive... And wished I hadn't Expose me for all that I am The man behind the masquerade I am my own false witness I'm left to conquer the mountains in my mind And I am my maker Life is what's killing me I hate the fact that I'm just fine Forever seeking anything to take responsibility Life is what's killing me I hate the fact that I'm alive Forever searching for my scapegoat because I refuse to face reality At least I can say I tried to cherish Every single day when I woke up and didn't want to die I'd work my hands to the bone Trying to stay suspended in those specific seconds But I know I'm just counting down the minutes Until I'm miserable again
The lyrics to the whole album brings tears to my eyes. I'm so sorry counterparts I skipped out on you guys for this new album but came back and now I'm so ashamed!!! At first I was too attached to the current will carry us for and for some odd reason didn't like the album. Then I really listened to it and fell in love again.
Honestly, I've literally never cried from just hearing music until I heard this song. I've been through the ringer during my brief 20 years of living and Counterparts has helped me push the hardships that I've had to endure. I love this band.
You guys gave me the time of day at the peak of my alcoholism and you helped me grow past it. You helped me pull all of the loose strings worth of tangents I let go astray back together. Some may see this music as negative, but these are truly words I was too afraid to speak, yelled at volumes I wished I had the courage to expel them out.
LYRICS Expose me for all that I am The man behind the masquerade, I am my own false witness Fact resides solely in the depths of my mind… and will I ever really let it come to surface? I think it's both, I'm pretty sure (throughout other songs lyrics) he talks about depression and wanting to die and making these songs to spread his word + an aid for those suffering too.. not sure, but he's such a good dude!
i swear they are becoming one of my favorite bands. i heard this song on AXSTV, and fell in love :) i was a pierce the veil fan but i got into more more and more of em and yeah 💕
There's nothing better than seeing one of your favorite bands that have changed your life in a good way live and singing along they were so good on the free your mind tour
Counterparts has delivered 3 stellar albums in a row. They aren't an arrogant band or a band that markets 'likes' and 'shares'. It is about the music, it is about the connection with fans, lyrically. This is why Counterparts is the best hardcore band right now, and will be for some time.
Seeing these guys come as far as they are now growing up around Hamilton has been amazing and made them into my favourite band. Can't wait to get my copy of this album. Best album of 2013!
LOVE LOVE LOVE IT. ive seen counterparts live 3 times and cant wait to see them again. i have so much respect for this band, and their music just keeps getting better. whats not to like?
This band literally is perfect. Everything they write, lyriclly and instrumentally is just mesmorizing. They're real; and that's what a lot of people have lost in music now a days. I love the emotion and everything put into this band. Come back to Philly already.
You are so right. These three sentences changed my whole perspective. I will never listen to them again. I used to love them but now I hate them because you are so influential.
screaming throughout the whole song? that's new... even the hardest bands known have their singing break. I like it, but definitely couldn't listen to it all day, but its good to see bands trying something new. keep it up guys
I love Counterparts. They're so much different then that Beck/Kanye West shit. I'm glad to see some bands not following the same internet meme addicted formula like all those AYY LMAO bands.
The difference between a musician and a guitar player... is a musician does their part no matter how simple (or complex) to compliment the finished product and a guitar player is only worried about their part sounding good (usually only appreciated by other musicians) Anyone who has listened to this band in their entirety knows they have "hard to play" riffs at times but they always allow their musicianship to prevail. Just my 2 cents I suppose.
Why does it matter if it is simple when it sounds fantastic and the lyrics speak as loud as ever? This song in itself just from the lyrics is powerful.
Well congratulations that you like other music than I do. Its crazy how there's so many people in the world and we all like different things! It doesn't mean you have to be an asshat :)
I love Counterparts. They're so much different then that Memphis May Fire/Northlane shit. I'm glad to see some bands not following the same breakdown addicted formula like all those Rise Records bands.
Nothing special about northlane? They've got brilliant guitar and drum lines, go listen to the Discoveries album and stop judging bands by just one single song...
No, it means I have, and it means that the hardcore/metalcore/deathcore bands that have stopped abusing breakdowns and have starting writing actual songs have grown up along with me.
why no? that is a good thing for them, at least they can gain some more popularity, they absolutely deserve more recognition for their hard work. BTW great song, great video, great album, keep up the good work guys...Debris is a BOMB!
True, but Alex brought more of the melodies in the songs. Jesse is the main writer for the hardcore aspect. It may change a bit, but I still think it will have the sound we love. I hope. :)
Jesse said on instigram that he and alex both wrote Lost. jesse wrote ghost, debris, witness, decay, whither, and i think slave? so if you dig those songs, i think you're good lol
I love screaming/growling vocals but this is just a bit too much for me. Anyways, I wanted to say that I absolutely LOVE the lyrics. They're extremely well written.
"Lost count of all the times i made it home alive and wish I hadn't." these lyrics i swear are everything. so glad I found this band.
Never been much of a lyric person, I usually just listen to the music and take the lyrics for granted. Just read the lyrics to this song and it hit me to the core. feel the same exact way bro what is it about this band????
Michael Michaelson you posted that about a week ago week ago
+Mathijs Tieken indeed. what it is with this band.
this album is what made me go to my dr and get a diagnosis/get on brain meds
Chills every fucking time

And you believe all that you're told
Serenity is a beautiful hoax, a liar

And I am my maker
Life is what's killing me
I hate the fact that I'm just fine
Forever seeking anything to take responsibility
Life is what's killing me
I hate the fact that I'm alive
Forever searching for my scapegoat because
I refuse to face reality
At least I can say I tried to cherish
Every single day when I woke up and didn't want to die
I'd work my hands to the bone
Trying to stay suspended in those specific seconds
But I know I'm just counting down the minutes
Until I'm miserable again
God level writing since day one.
Brendan is such a talented lyricist. How he uses his lyrics in songs is quite unique imo.
I've had the honor of playing with these dudes twice now and both times, they absolutely killed it.
These guys are keeping me alive right now. No joke.
The lyrics to the whole album brings tears to my eyes. I'm so sorry counterparts I skipped out on you guys for this new album but came back and now I'm so ashamed!!! “At least I can say I tried, to cherish, every single day when I woke up and I didn’t want to die”
This band gets people with depression.
At least I can say I tried, to cherish every single day when I woke and didn't want to die
Melodic Hardcore
Hellions though, that's whats up !
This band will live forever
Fuck yeah
2:05 to the end is just my favorite part of all time, gives me shiver every time!
but i know im just counting down the minutes until im miserable AGAIN!
Honestly, I've literally never cried from just hearing music until I heard this song. I've been through the ringer during my brief 20 years of living and Counterparts has helped me push the hardships that I've had to endure. I love this band.
First Alexisonfire, then Comeback Kid, then Counterparts. Canada produces some good hardcore.
Silverstein, too!
FluxSpirit he said good
Mike Roessner Hey, they're good too. Not really on the same level as AOF or Counterparts, but they're good.
Structures too if you consider them hardcore
Mike Roessner I actually like Silverstein, but that comment was funny regardless so I'm upvoting it haha
You guys gave me the time of day at the peak of my alcoholism and you helped me grow past it.

Try seeing them live and keep listening to them. They are seriously one of the best hardcore bands right now.
I didn't know an already perfect genre could be perfected. This is insane. Their whole new record is insane!
Forever my favorite album.
"Life is what's killing me".
I think it's both, I'm pretty sure (throughout other songs lyrics) he talks about depression and wanting to die and making these songs to spread his word + an aid for those suffering too.. not sure, but he's such a good dude!
Didn't know this band until I saw them support Architects live but man I love them :')
you should see them live in London this December
Melhor banda que existe. Essa é pra chorar no mosh!
i swear they are becoming one of my favorite bands. i heard this song on AXSTV, and fell in love :) i was a pierce the veil fan but i got into more more and more of em and yeah 💕

The imagery in this video is incredible, i love it.
Seeing these guys come as far as they are now growing up around Hamilton has been amazing and made them into my favourite band. Can't wait to get my copy of this album. Best album of 2013!
I relate to this song so much.

the best song of all time and my life!!! ♥
You are so right. These three sentences changed my whole perspective. I will never listen to them again. I used to love them but now I hate them because you are so influential.
These guys are ridiculously good. You know something's good when it inspires you to write a song the first time you listen to it.
Finally got to see these guys last night. It was absolutely wonderful, I love them.
hands down one of the best bands out there
Timothy Clark the best
this song opened the gate for me to this music! 2013 for the win!
This band is beyond awesome. So glad they stuck it out and made a new album!
This is the only music video that i have ever watched that actually makes sense to and means something.
This was my favourite counterparts lineup!
This band is purely amazing and truly inspiring.

i want another album that sounds and is mixed like this
best band in the world right here.
I love Counterparts. They're so much different then that Beck/Kanye West shit. I'm glad to see some bands not following the same internet meme addicted formula like all those AYY LMAO bands.
me too How have I not known of this greatness!?
4K footage of their full set from a few nights ago on my channel. My first time seeing them and they killed it.
such a great song
this is so good. best canadian band since comeback kid.
why the fuck are counterparts soo underrated??
Saw them for the first time a couple days ago. Amazing 3
Never found a bad song from these guys.
Saw these with In hearts wake last year and they fucking killed it. It was the first time I heard of them and I literally fell in love that night
good band i am fans indonesia
I miss 2013
When I saw the worms I was thinking “man this looks like something Max Moore would do.” And then it ended and I saw Max Moore Films. Knew it!
I just discovered this band and I loved them right fucking away.
Both are great choices!
me encanta counterparts!!
No idea why this song hits me so hard
I love how the whole band breaks down and head bangs
See Counterparts with Sylar in Howell, NJ on Friday, December 13th at GameChangerWorld!
just saw them in show, soooo sick !!!
Amazingly amazing. Like seriously
need to see them live
Why does it matter if it is simple when it sounds fantastic and the lyrics speak as loud as ever? This song in itself just from the lyrics is powerful.
I just want to add that chords they use are insane and unique as well :)
So awesome!!
Well congratulations that you like other music than I do. Its crazy how there's so many people in the world and we all like different things! It doesn't mean you have to be an asshat :)
YES!
Excelente video
Me a dejado una buena impresion de este año
The best album that I will ever pre order!!!
This song is so powerful
I love Counterparts. They're so much different then that Memphis May Fire/Northlane shit. I'm glad to see some bands not following the same breakdown addicted formula like all those Rise Records bands.
Northlane isn't even bad though
They aren't bad, but there's absolutely nothing special about them.
because metalcore is shit and this isn't metalcore
Marcus Valentin I agree. Melodic Hardcore is the way to go.
Nothing special about northlane? They've got brilliant guitar and drum lines, go listen to the Discoveries album and stop judging bands by just one single song...

Its my birthday the 15th of july and surely loved this song and band 3
keep it up hardcore livesss
This is great
i love this song
something is wrong with the counter, it only shows my views
Ooooh i see what you did there cx counterparts is bae tho
I got my tooth chipped during this song
Counterparts gets rowdy
I'm sad alex is gone :( hopefully their next record doesn't change too much with the new guitarist.
As long as Brendan and Jesse are in the band it will never change.
Curtis Mohrhardt i dont think so. whenever a band gets a new guitarist their sound changes most of the time. since each guitarist has different styles
Get to seee them soon! :D
Exactly this!
Sick!
still slapping
Counterparts is one the reasons I want to road trip to Canada some day
Life is what’s killing Me
This. This is where it's at.
I am seeing them on Sunday with Hundredth and I am so fucking stoked!
I've watched this 50 times now
